Four free agents I would be interested in this summer to add some grit and size to the lineup. I

Mayfield
Soucy
Hathaway
Bertuzzi

Hellebuyck has played way too many games over the last number of years. It's going to catch up with him sooner than later.
Luckily we’ll still have Woll who can ideally come in and play 30-ish games. Drops Hellebuyck down to about 50-ish games a season where I think you want your number 1 goalie to be at.

I’d add Comtois to that list and agree on Helly

Speaking of targeting and aiming take a look at these .

Biggest Nikita Zadorov Hits

Can you aim much higher than 6-6 248lbs?

Nikita Zadorov -- Luke Schenn 3rd pairing

I don’t think that would be a good pairing. With either of Luke or Zadarov, you want a mobile guy to compliment what they bring to the table.

Schenn would probably be with Mo if extended.

If Brodie is gone, I don’t mind spending the $ on Zadarov.

Zadorov - Timmins would be a nice third pair IMO. You got physicality, size, puck movement and shooting. Basically a little bit of everything and did I mention size?! Seems like a pair Treliving would want.

Irony : Leafs new GM Brad Treliving acquired Nikita Zadorov from Chicago for a 3rd round pick that he got from our Leafs when Dubas acquired David Rittich.

The Calgary Flames have themselves a new left shot defender, friends. According to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, via Elliotte Friedman, the Flames have acquired defenseman Nikita Zadorov from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Toronto’s 2022 third round pick (previously acquired in the David Rittich trade).

Rielly -- Schenn
McCabe -- Gudas
Zadorov
-- Liljegren

Nobody is going hard to the Leafs net. :)

I'd rather Mayfield over Gudas (they may cost similar) ...or if we could afford Gavrikov

I'm good on Mayfield

I want Trelving to build a Redwood forest on defense that has a lot of bite. 6-5 220 hard shooting and hitting Dman checks that box.

Mayfield would be a great addition. Mayfield, Liljegren and Timmins on the right side. Lots of size there. I think he’d fit better with Rielly than Schenn. Only difference is, you’re probably looking at 4 million per for Mayfield while Schenn is probably getting 1.5 tops.

100% agree ...not sure if Soucy is 'tough' enough, but he also has size, and shouldnt break the bank. i just wouldnt pay Schenn anything over 1mil, as he isnt going to learn to skate better any time soon, and he'll be a reg season liability in that regard.

Gudas or Mayfield while they were still in their 20s. I quite like how Gavrikov looked after the trade to LA. Not particularly physical but he was there in the playoffs. However he is a top 4 LD and they already have a couple of those.

I don't know if they would be willing to move Brodie out assuming Schenn is back but two RD vets there means Lily in a 3rd pair and Timmins in the press box. I don't believe they would use Brodie as a regular lefty but maybe if Gio goes and that would be a scenario where they could add a different style of vet on the right. A $5M third pairing guy seems weird. I think they need to improve but not sure how except for dropping Holl.

Brodie is the team's only D man on the roster who goes against other team's top lines. He may have had a tough playoffs but he was great during the regular season and has been for years.

Absolutely no clue why people are looking to move off him. They need to find a player to play WITH him, since they won't play 44 vs top competition/defensive zone.

XXX - Brodie
Rielly - Schenn
McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano
Timmins

I still think McCabe is that guy beside Brodie. They had a really tough series against Florida, but it’s a small sample size. They were great after the deadline.

I’d be going for Carson Soucy. He’s 6’5, throws a ton of hits, and can play both sides.

McCabe - Brodie
Rielly - Schenn
Soucy - Liljegren
Giordano - Timmins

It’s such a balanced d-core. You’ve got 3 of the top hitters among D in McCabe, Schenn and Soucy. You’ve got McCabe and Brodie who produce elite defensive results. Liljegren is becoming very steady. Rielly is Rielly.

Our big “splash” needs to be expanding our forward depth. I think a signing like Soucy sets us up incredibly well. Run with Samsonov and Woll, we don’t need the trade for Hellebuyck.

Focus on adding to our forward corps. Tyler Bertuzzi would be a great target and we’ll have the cap space to take a run.

Connor Brown on a 1-2 year deal. Heck, I’d even bring in Sean Monahan on a 1-2 year deal. Try and bring back Acciari, Kampf, ROR.

It sounds like a lot but we have cap space this summer. Let’s use it to make this team solid 1-23.

Brodie is gonna be 33 making 5 million next season. If the playoffs were any indication of what he's gonna become then I'd try to use that cap to upgrade the team or to find a replacement for him. He was never the greatest skater so he doesn't have that to keep him being a useful player if he is getting beat like he was. Might as well sell high on him since he does only have 1 year left on his deal if we can upgrade the team. If not then I'm fine keeping him and pairing him up with Liljegren.

I think a big focus should be getting a guy up front who can play 2C as well. Monahan looks good in FA, or I wouldn't mind trade liljergren for a comparable centre (Morgan Frost from philly?)

Depends on the system being played.. zadorov gudbranson was a great pairing last year

Zadorv wouldnt work in our system

Our defence doesn't need more #4-7s. We need a substantive #1-3 add with Muzzin retired and Brodie a declining rental.

What are we bringing in to hang with:
- Pietro/Theodore/McNabb
- Hedman/Sergachev/Cernak
- Ekblad/Montour/Forsling
- Slavin/Pesce/Skjei
- Makar/Toews/Byram
- McAvoy/Lindholm/Orlov

etc.

2+ years ago Rielly/Muzzin/Brodie was respectable, but now it's a problem. With the core getting raises and further bloating the team, idk how you solve this without one of them moving for a D. Next summer we'll be looking at Rielly/McCabe/??. Can't get to that.

I liked Brown when he was here, but not really interested in bringing back the older and declining version of that.
That’s the problem. Yes we can desperately use a Kadri, Wilson, Hyman, Brown, etc. but not the ones of today. The ones 4 years ago.

You have to find the next ones.

Even Sam Bennett a couple of years ago that we missed out on could have helped.

Who's the next one? I'm not sure yet, I don't watch enough around the league. Comes back to our drafting, no one with any kind of size or jam is in the system beyond Knies / Minten and you can't bank on the 1-2 guys to make it.

Acciari and Schenn are guys we've got to bring back for some of that physicality.

Jack McBain is a guy on the rise in this category. I think he tops out as a 3C personally, but he's got a ton of jam, and shown offensive capability in the past.

Comtois has decent size, and uses it, but isn't in the top tier of physicality department. I think he goes UFA.

Ross Colton can play C, and often has for Tampa... he's fairly physical, but he's a RFA. Given how tight they are to the cap, they might not come to terms, and if he goes UFA, he's someone to consider.

I like Keegan Kolesar too for a bottom line role, but he's not going to be available.

Finally, I think we should consider Tyler Bertuzzi as a top six option. He's a UFA, and plays the kind of rat game we could use.

Lemieux is a guy I think about as well, he has enough crazy in him, somewhat young.

The other issue is defense...I cannot find a top pairing defenseman that I could reasonably project to be available via trade, ideally right shot.

After seeing how Vegas' plays I would target the following players from the discount bin:

Fowards
Duehr
Bastian (RFA)
Colton (RFA)
Foegele
Archibald (UFA)
Grundstrom
Garland
Rodrigues (UFA)
Belzille (UFA)

Defense
Kovacevic
Petry
Zadorov
Harrington (UFA)

I really can't come up with much for D either. The only thing I can realistically come up with, is new guy in Calgary looks for some flexibility to work out deals for Backlund, Hanifin, Kylington, and a bunch others at the end of next year, and decides to move Weegar, and we send back Brodie, plus something. At best that's a pretty thin trade idea.

But something around

Mo Schenn
McCabe Weegar
Gio Lilly
Timmins

Isn't a bad group at all. Some physicality, some offense...

I am 1.5 mil over the cap, with a 22 man roster with such a trade, and I'm not sure how to address it at the moment. Maybe Schenn takes $1.5 instead of $2, and we get RoR at $4.5 instead of $5, and run 21 man roster....

Bertuzzi Matthews Nylander
Knies RoR Marner
Comtois Tavares Jarnkrok
Lafferty McBain Acciari

D as above

Samsonov
Woll
