It's not our blueline that needs improving though. It's our forward group, and timely scoring.
I'd argue for improving both areas (but somewhat more for the latter, yes). Scoring 2 GF for that stretch of games provided too slim of a margin for error in terms of the goaltending and defensive whole. At the same time, that Rielly-Schenn pairing felt like the only sure thing on the blueline.

Let's hope the promotion of Knies and a healthy Robertson fixes some of that skill depth that to a certain degree. Losing Amirov long-term really hurt as well.

I think someone like Andersson would bring offence to the defense, something the Leafs have lacked for awhile. Rielly is pretty good there of course but after him it gets slim. Liljegren is trending nicely. Niemela is still a big of a question mark at the NHL level.

Not sure about trading Marner or really making that kind of splash, but I think there's merit to upgrading defensively if the defender brings in a package that would give us better skating and skill from the back end.

Let's not forget that Connor Timmins put up 14 points in 25 games. Sure, he's green, and needs more time, but he likely gets the opportunity this coming year, and he's shown he can put up that offense from the back end that we need.

I think we need to resign Schenn, and partner him with Rielly.

A Marner for Lindholm + Andersson is an interesting trade. I suspect Timmins has to go the other way, with Marner... just for our roster.

"If" we did that... we'd have to do something like..

Rielly Schenn
McCabe Andersson
Brodie Liljegren
Giordano

If the plan is to keep William Nylander and move Mitch Marner, I wonder if LA would be interested with Adrian Kempe and Brandt Clarke as part of the package coming to Toronto.

Kempe and Nylander together would be fun to watch on the second line.

Kempe is a gamer. Can’t see LA parting with him, and they don’t exactly have a reason to.

The Kings have a wealth of young players and prospects. Definitely a team I'd be interested in trading with.

I don’t think the give up Toffoli, but he’d be a great scoring winger add. Lindholm is probably more realistic
But isn’t Lindholm their 1C or am I mistaken?
If I am the Flames, I would ask for JT than MM.

JT is a C and the cost for JT is lower. Instead of sending Andersson, it can be done with Tanev or Weegar plus Lindholm

Before we get too ahead of ourselves... the Matthews situation needs resolving. Is he really asking for $15 mil, what is his injury status, and are we signing him, or trading him before July 1st.

If Matthews is traded, that changes all of our discussions.

Is there a deal with Calgary to be made with Marner? They’re probably looking to shake things up a little.

I like Rasmus Andersson, but I think Calgary needs to add. What could make a deal work?

I would think something like Andersson and lindholm.

Indeed.

I don't care about the term at $15M AAV, no matter what the term that dollar amount is not even remotely palatable and is borderline criminal. The problem is that it likely wouldn't be tolerable for another team either, meaning he'd have to be moved for a rental return, which is a bummer.

You just can't lose him for nothing under any circumstances.

A Blues fan on the mainboard started a thread about a Marner/Kyrou+ swap. Kyrou's not Marner but it does check a lot of boxes for me. Prime age top line talent coming back, extra cap space, long term cost certainty, and a decent pool of futures (Neighbours/Snuggerud/Dean/Bolduc/ 3x 2023 1st rounders) to bridge the talent gap.

No chance I accept anything less than Robert Thomas plus Neighbours.

I am once again proposing Kastelic for Timmins.

I am high on Timmins but at the end of the day he will be 25 to start next season and he’s played 130 hockey games since he turned 20. I don’t see a future with him on this team, especially if Schenn returns.

Ottawa needs RHD, Toronto needs a new 4C. Kastelic has been an analytics darling this year in Ottawa on the defensive and offensive side of the puck. He is a big RS C. He’s signed for 2 years beyond this season at 835k. He also fights and hits which as of right now the Leafs don’t have someone under contract that will do that. The Leafs get slightly younger while saving a small amount on the cap.
Trent Fredrick Boston RFA 31 pts 2 mil
Boston can't afford him
2nd or 3rd rd pk

I'd say Garland is a 4mil/y player, and from what I've seen from him, he'd mesh well with Matthews.

Pettersson is certainly not available, but one can hope.

I think going from Bunting to Garland could be alright. The Garland cap hit is a little too high though. Garland is a smaller player but he would give back speed and work ethic on the forecheck that we need more.

Not sure about the rest and making it a big blockbuster but Garland is definitely on the market and I think the Leafs could and should have interest in the right deal. Not sure he's exactly what they need though.
