Good stretch run piece. Speed to burn and depth. Has some pop in bat.

But definite September call up, bench piece to be pitch runner in late innings or pitch hitter in 9th with 2 outs heading into extra innings. Will start off at 2nd and be at third by 2 pitches.

Nice pickup. Think Dalton Pompey in 2015.

If you put the over/under on Smith's games played with the Jays this year at 0.5, I would pick the under.

Showing games on YouTube is bush, it's bush league. The whole presentation seems very amateurish to me.

While I agree the commentary usually isn’t very good, the same can sometimes be said for what we get on Sportsnet lol YouTube drives a ton of viewers, and they likely get paid pretty well by the platform.

The major sports leagues are starting to look towards twitch and YouTube as possible ways to reach the young viewers, and really, it’s not a bad idea.

I wonder if he's just injury insurance or if they'll cram him on the 40 man with a couple days left in the season so he's eligible for the playoff roster.

Sucks Davis got yoinked by the pinstripes.

The last Jays broadcast on YouTube consisted of three guys arguing about how much baseball sucks while talking overtop of the two people who actually wanted to talk about what was happening in the game. It may give them access to a huge audience of younger viewers, but if they want to get those viewers interested in baseball they did a pretty shitty job.

He was probably just added as depth for Buffalo. If they're going to make a 40-man move, there are definitely a handful of guys ahead of him. He was replacement-level in 2019, worse in a small sample last year (-5 wRC+) and horrible in another small sample in AAA this year (60 wRC+).

This team has enough good options that they don't have the need/space for someone purely as a pinch-runner.

I'm confused as to how Otto Lopez flies by Kevin Smith after 11 games at AAA with a .815 OPS when Smith has been raking a .950 OPS at that level over a full season.

Mallex Smith feels like a Buffalo signing and potential replacement for Davis if he can get his game together. Has totally fallen apart since having a nice first full MLB season in 2018.

Buck and Pat are on YouTube?

The youtube idiots made Buck seem like Vin Scully.

The whole game was basically a discussion of every hot-button issue in the game with one muppet taking a ludicrously progressive stance and the other dumbass taking the most hard-line traditionalist anti-stats stance possible while the game was being completely ignored and the one smart person was being completely ignored when she tried to chime in with some actual relevant interesting information.

The only good thing was the defensive position graphic in the top corner which was actually a terrific idea and super helpful.

Annoying talkers for sure, but at least they just treated modern stats as the useful tools they are, and as basic knowledge, and talked baseball the way we do.

But yes, they need less people in the booth and they need to let her talk more.

The biggest problem was that the game was just completely ignored. The broadcast was basically just a sequence of arguments with a new one every inning. 5th inning - argue about the shift. 6th inning - argue about the runner on 2nd in the 10th. 7th inning - argue about whether stats are ruining the game.

I'm not watching the game to hear sports radio debate. I'm watching the game to watch the game and enjoy it.

The Jays are on Youtube? Is that in addition to Sportsnet or in place of?

OTTO!!!!!

love this kid.....even if I don't think he's an actual major leaguer. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.

My hopes/expectations are basically right where they were for Espinal: a utility guy who can provide a little versatility with solid defense at multiple positions and decent enough offense driven by OBP and limited power. He hasn't really played SS this year, so I assume his defense is a bit behind Espinal's, but he's also had much better offensive numbers at a younger age (and, to be fair, he's been up against Groshans/Martin for playing time at SS).

I'll also add this :

For all we talk about all the things Buck and Pat do wrong (and there are many), one thing they do really well is discuss pitch selection/mix and what the pitcher and catcher are trying to do (and how the batter is trying to adjust). In the last youtube game, this was just entirely non-existent, even when the crew was actually bothering to talk about the game.

Just realized that Otto Lopez is on the 40 man and Kevin Smith is not. So that was probably the biggest reason why Lopez got the call over Smith, also Lopez can play the OF - so if Springer and Bichette need time off, Lopez can pretty much play anywhere.

Blue Jays sign two non-drafted free agents, including Quebec-born catcher - Sportsnet.ca

The Toronto Blue Jays signed two non-drafted free agents on Tuesday, including one Canadian.

The team announced that Quebec-born catcher Nicolas Deschamps and Mexico-born infielder Andres Sosa had agreed to contracts.

Deschamps, who turns 19 in September, had previously committed to play at Stetson University next season after playing high-school baseball at TNXL Academy in Florida. According to the minor league baseball transactions list, the left-handed hitter has been assigned to the rookie-level Florida Complex League Blue Jays.

Sosa returned for a second senior season at Dallas Baptist University in Texas after his 2020 campaign was cut short by injuries. In 45 games in 2021, he hit .234 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs.

Yeah, I'm still on team "DFA Valera and give Smith his roster spot", but this is probably a short-term utility spot, so no sense removing someone from the 40-man just yet.

I just realized the AAA season runs all the way through to the end of the MLB season this year instead of ending in early September - makes sense since they got started a month late. But that kinda sucks because I can see them leaving a guy like Smith in AAA for the stretch run and playoffs instead of giving him the MLB shot he deserves. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
