Those are awful comparisons, and Edler is not a "vet"

I have to agree with Anchor here. The only guy that the Wings have in the system that is similar to Edler is possibly Marchenko. Backman might be another one, but I want to see how he does in NA before expecting much from him. Edler is entering his prime, and can QB a PP. Wings currently don't have a single dman that can effectively do that. Kronwall is a much better rover than he is a QB. Oulette from all accounts projects as a Vlasic type which is fantastic but isn't going to save our PP. Sproul strikes me as a Weber type, but he still needs someone setting up that onetimer. Dekeyser probably tops out as a 2nd unit pp guy. Smith is another roamer, but hasn't even proven to do that effectively yet. And Ericsson isn't even remotely close. Dude simply cannot get his shot through.

All this trade talk is delusional. The window is so shut, there's blinds down and iron bars in front of it, yet here guys talk about quick fixes. Unbelievable.

Trade talk? In my trade thread? It's more likely than you think.

Most of the options here are at least in the realm of possibilities. Nobody is talking about getting Jamie Benn out of Dallas or snagging Doughty. With so few actual NHL trades, though, 99% of all trade talk never comes to fruition.

So much for me unveiling my Crosby for Andersson trade proposal. :(

We have a mass of studly young kids on the cusp of becoming major contributors to this team. In fact, some of them are already contributing a lot of our offense at the moment. Aging Zetterberg and Datsyuk will always be among the best players in the league. We've handled Boston well. We'll get breaks against Tampa and Florida. The Sens are a shell without Alfie.

The Habs are destroying themselves by trying to turn their team into a "tough grinding," and not surprisingly are massively inhibiting the usefulness of great puck possession players such as P.K. Subban and Tomas Plekanec with such an outdated system.

The Leafs? Well, let's just say that it has been proven that a Potato could do a better job than GM Nonis. The Leafs and Habs are playing on borrowed time. Both of them are getting outplayed by their opponents more often than the opposite. Can they keep this up? Perhaps. Will they? Not likely. The window is still open. Very much so.

Here's some better news!

Thanks to the brilliant work of Chris Boyle, it has been calculated that since the Red Wings won the cup in 2008, teams with a Fenwick For percentage of greater than 50% have made the playoffs 75% of the time. The Wings are boasting a FF% in close situations of 51.9%. Montreal ranks 20th with a FF% close of 48.4%. Toronto ranks 29th out of 30 teams with a FF% Close of 42.8%. The odds are in our favor.

I can totally see the deadline coming and going.... and us staying pat. Weiss getting healthy will be "the deal".

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm hoping for a move, partly just because it's fun when it happens, but I don't think Holland is going to force anything this year by overpaying.

I tend to agree. The only thing this franchise seems to be able to do now is draft.... see if we can keep building it that way because Holland's signings and trades are spinning the tires.

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that we'll not be making any moves.

On the other hand, maybe a move happens now when you least expect it.

Not sure I agree. I was pushing for Bouwmeester hard last year, but I'm on the fence about Edler. There are a number of reasons for that, but suffice it to say that if you watched Bouwmeester, the concern was whether he looked the franchise defenseman he was alleged to be or just a solid #2/1B. With respect to Edler, its whether he can still be a #2 or is instead a #3/4 under who is being exposed under a new system. To make matters worse, the supposed asking price for Edler is higher than that of Bouwmeester - namely, one of Tatar+ or Nyquist+ in a year that Tatar/Nyquist have proven something at the NHL level.

Having said that, I would gladly given up the tolerable combinations that Wings fans have suggested of late - i.e. something in the form of a 1st + Pulkkinen + Kindl + Andy

The Bouwmeester avoidance was the same as Edler because of asking price. Ultimately, Bouwmeester went for far less than what people had projected.

For reference, Bouwmeester went for a conditional 1st in 13', Mark Cundari and Reto Berra.

Edler is signed longer and to a better deal, but it doesn't push the value that far off to some of the stuff I've seen proposed.

There are certainly differences in the overall comparison, I agree they are not the same. I just meant in terms of a sizeable number of people not wanting them, strictly based on the belief that they're not a good player. Bouwmeester was under-rated by a lot of people last year, and Edler is again this year.

Ken Holland says he is talking to other GM's. Wants to make more of a "Hockey deal" and maybe add another veteran D man. @DSports1051

Bout what we'd expect....thinking someone like Tallinder.

Agreed. Holland never mentioned how good the veteran would be.

lol...I mean I do think someone like him would be a decent replacement for Lashoff/Kindl and probably can be acquired for very cheap. But yeah certainly would be no barn burner...

a hockey deal is a trade for an actual useful roster player, under 30, that helps today and tomorrow as they're signed beyond this year

if holland believes adding a 35 year old to play as our #8 dman in the pressbox who is a UFA as a hockey deal then he has lost his mind
