I would love the Rangers positioned to get the best out of their draft picks in this year's reportedly deep draft. Getting one of the top 3 picks would be great. The sad thing is not only is this in the Rangers' hand (or rather their opponent's hands to be more specific), it also means teams like Chicago, Detroit, and Montreal (maybe even Edmonton & Vancouver) need to perform well moving down the stretch. Ironically, if we didn't win that Western Conf road trip, we'd be sitting nicely in 4th or 5th pick slot with a decent shot at winning the 1st OA lottery pick. Very good shot at top 3. Our team really could use an impact player(s) coming out of this draft even if it takes them a few years to make the team.

I just don't want AV back.

I'm not gonna waste my time rooting for them to lose but I don't want them to win enough to save his job.

If they do lose out and get a high pick, I won't lose sleep over it.

This so much too. AV needs to go at this point and I don't want some crazy streak saving his job. No personal ill will, it's just time for this team to move on from AV. I want a coach who can adjust his game plan on the fly but still recognize when a line-combo is hot and ride it.

You're somewhat making the argument for getting a top 5 pick.

25 out of the 140 players taken in the top 5 of these drafts have won a cup. That's roughly 18%, or 1 in 5.

If you pick correctly, you have a 1 in 5 shot of that player winning a cup.

A better idea would be: Did this player win the cup with the team that drafted him? It distinguishes if the player helped the drafting team win it all. You've got guys like Kessel who are a no, but players like Eric Staal got it done for their drafting team.

There is also a chance these numbers go up this year. The cup favorites are: Nashville (Johansen, Turris), Tampa (Stamkos, Hedman), Boston (Nash) and Winnipeg (Laine, Wheeler). Pens already have their guys, but these are the top 4.

And I'd argue that regarding the last 2-3 years is not smart. Those teams usually need a few years to build up a Cup contender. I think if you consider the pretty consistent year to year results, that might even be like 5 years.

ordinarily I'd say tank, since there's no defense and AV has to get pushed out, not to mention that they jack up my season ticket prices if the team gets into the playoffs. But there's nobody worth tanking for in the draft so I'd rather hold out to see a miracle run to the SCF

This draft only has a generational defense prospect. Shouldn't try to acquire those.

So does Pittsburgh?

I can't believe this is even a thread. Absolutely no choice. Tank and lose and get the pick. I would have given up the entirety of that awesome 2014-15 run for McDavid that year.

Just keep calm and carry on. Things will find their level.
Go out and play hard, that's all. It's still valuable time for player assessment.

I don't know that tanking will be the panacea we hope it will be, but I do know that making the playoffs does absolutely nothing for the further improvement of the franchise.

I think at this point what ails the Rangers comes down to whether you opt for rehab (playoffs) or surgery (higher pick).

Personally, I'd rather just have the surgery (higher pick) and get it over with so we can move forward.

Is it a guaranteed cure? No, but there's a hope for relief.

But rehab (playoffs) just feels like delaying the inevitable with no real hope for a long term fix.

I would agree with this analogy. Well said.

I feel like playoffs would be more like continuing to play on a broken leg.

Really??!! That’s what you get from that list? Did you catch the last six years?

Both small market teams that can't attract free agents. They have nothing in common with us.

I agree and I don't see the analogy.

The Rangers will always be a team that has appeal to free agents or talents from around the world. We're good there.

Additionally, I feel like we've done a better than aveage job of finding talents with the later picks we have. What we've lacked is first rounders, and higher picks.

When we look at the Oilers, for example, we see some serious inability to find talent outside of the top picks of a draft. So that's not a fair comparison from that perspective.

Now that we have multiple first round picks (2017, 2018 and maybe 2019), I think we're in a reasonably good position to find multiple talents per draft.
