There are no guarantees with any of this. I’m not going into this thinking everything is automatically going to be successful. I’m just excited to actually see this kind of rebuild being attempted. I think this could be fun.
Agreed. And I definitely think a loss helps the team's outlook more than a win, but I think it turns the dial much less than the average "team tank" member does.

The last time before this season I entertained the idea that the team might be better off losing than winning was 2009-10. I thought they might drop into the 5-7 range and have a chance at a Cam Fowler-type player.

I do, but that's irrelevant to this discussion. I just think we need to be aware that we may play poorly and jump 3-4 spots and still get the same player we would 3-4 spots later.

Here I am trying to hope the mindset of management has changed for the better, and you are ruining it for me.

You're somewhat making the argument for getting a top 5 pick.

25 out of the 140 players taken in the top 5 of these drafts have won a cup. That's roughly 18%, or 1 in 5.

If you pick correctly, you have a 1 in 5 shot of that player winning a cup.

A better idea would be: Did this player win the cup with the team that drafted him? It distinguishes if the player helped the drafting team win it all. You've got guys like Kessel who are a no, but players like Eric Staal got it done for their drafting team.

There is also a chance these numbers go up this year. The cup favorites are: Nashville (Johansen, Turris), Tampa (Stamkos, Hedman), Boston (Nash) and Winnipeg (Laine, Wheeler). Pens already have their guys, but these are the top 4.

In my armchair, amateur scout mind the draft has a clear top 7.

I think the NYR org would be better off in the position to draft one of those 7.

I don't think anything I said should ruin that hope.

I read those posts as the Rangers are going to select whoever they "like" for whatever reason rather than them selecting who has the most talent, so it does not really matter if they draft a couple spots sooner?

Neither.

Can't we just play halfway decent and finish 11th in the conference?

If we do make the playoffs, I won't cry over the draft pick, but that brings AV back. That can't happen.

This opinion is the one so far that I'm most confused by. So you're ok not rooting for the most wins possible since you don't want them making the playoffs but don't want to root for them to lose enough to get a good pick?

I look at it as a question of potential value added to the franchise. I’ll never root for this team to lose, and “tank” doesn’t really encapsulate my viewpoint.

I’m basically breaking it down as comparing a few games of playoff revenue, more wear and tear on Hank, and a lower pick vs. no revenue, resting Hank a bit, and adding a better pick. This is a good draft with a solid top-10. Three firsts definitely helps, but the most value added will be with the top pick, so I hope they’ll add as high a pick as possible.

If missing the playoffs ensure AV getting fired, that’s also further value added to the franchise. Really good coach here for a bit, but his time is done.

The team and coaching staff should be playing and coaching to win which I believe they're doing. That doesn't mean running Henrik into the ground obviously but if a guy like Shattenkirk is healthy and ready to go then he should be playing. From the fan POV though, I'm hoping for the tank. Now that doesn't mean I'm rooting for the other team and cheering when the Rangers screw up. I kind of watch the games with indifference and not much care now. I'm just of a mindset the team is in a better spot going forward if they lose and I'm willing to sacrifice the last 15+ games of a pretty much meaningless season for it.

I just don't want AV back.

I'm not gonna waste my time rooting for them to lose but I don't want them to win enough to save his job.

If they do lose out and get a high pick, I won't lose sleep over it.

I'm saying it might not matter because there's a solid chance the player at the top of their list at the sixth pick is still there at 10. I'm not saying it's because they're dumb, that's just the nature of drafts.

ordinarily I'd say tank, since there's no defense and AV has to get pushed out, not to mention that they jack up my season ticket prices if the team gets into the playoffs. But there's nobody worth tanking for in the draft so I'd rather hold out to see a miracle run to the SCF

If you don't want to root for them to lose why don't you just not watch them? I mean, that's what I did for a while but found the young guys fun to watch as well as the new guys.

It's more important for this franchise in the future to land someone in the top 5/10 then get eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

We are starting to finally fill out our prospect pool but we still need to keep gaining more top-end prospects.

Just play hard, don’t do anything stupid in either direction and let the chips fall. It is highly unlikely that they make playoffs but it just as unlikely that they would get into top3 lottery choices.

Or I could watch them and root for them to win because that's the whole point.

Honestly we need the top pick but I can't say no to playoff hockey

We will never go far without enough of the right horses.

Lundy, take the rest of the year off
Halverson bring up and play him baptism under fire.
Rest Kreider.
Play Tambo and Gropp while letting others develop.
Stuff like that.

When that maxes our losses, draft as best as possible.
Build
this straightest direction, executed properly, is likely to be faster

“Zomg this team sucks trade everyone but Hank!”

“We’re only 3 points out of the playoffs what’s wrong with you guys wanting the team to lose?!?!?”

“Zomg I can’t believe we just/missed the playoffs/got swept in the first round!”

“Zomg we’re never gonna get an elite talent with the 15th pick!”

2018-2019 season: “Zomg the team still sucks we don’t have enough talent!”

Never change HF, never change
