I don’t think we should make a splash for a guy we can’t afford to keep like Tank, ROR, Meier. Even Gavrikov will get good money on the market.

My vote is Barbashev + Mikkola from STL.

How are we keeping Barbashev or Mikkola?

We can probably swing keeping Mikkola but the point is cost to acquire. If they’re rentals that’s fine, we don’t spend a boatload acquiring them. Renting ROR or Meier costs 3x renting either of them. It’s not about only acquiring guys we can keep - it’s about paying a fortune for guys we definitely can’t keep.

Is this team ready to go all in? I think paying a haul for a rental is not a good idea. If they can get a good rental for a 2nd and B prospect then go for it.

I would go after Meier, but only if there was a chance to extend him.

those are good pickups if you wanna lose in the first round

Meier puts this team over the top. dont let him go to NJ or Carolina.

I’d love Meier but we won’t be able to keep him and therefore we have to be willing to pay quite substantially to outbid other teams who feel they can.

We didn’t get bounced in the first last year with Copp, Vatrano, Motte and Braun as our additions. I think Barbashev, Mikkola and Motte again is quite similar.

I also don’t think it’s our year, and setting ourself back a year or two spending assets on someone like Meier who I don’t think changes it from not our year to being our year (as much as I’d love him as a long term piece) probably isn’t the way to go.

"All-in" is relative, but if not now, when? There is a pretty good chance that this is the apex of the older core + younger core together. Many think thats a reason to half measure it, but Chris Drury doesn't have a lifetime contract. He has also not made any large scale trades to bring in a difference making player in his 1.5 years as GM. He has a cache of assets. Legitimate star players are available. A looming 1st round series against his teams most hated rival (who buy the way are also looking to add big). The roster is better than it was at this point last year. There are more reasons to make major additions than not.

If your (not you, just in general) reasoning is "Oh well the Rangers arent winning the Cup anyway" than you're playing the wrong game.

Copp was miles better than Barbashev
