The only potential downside I see for this trade is Vilardi's health. If he stays healthy enough to play 60-70 games at a high level, this is a really good trade for the Jets.

Iaffalo isn't a core player, but the Jets needed forward depth, and both he and Vilardi bring some really good defensive value at F, which the Jets sorely lacked. Iafallo is on a good, short deal to add value for a year or two, and then he can be flipped for a decent return of picks at the TDL, if necessary.

The 2024 2nd is almost certainly in the top half of that round, which is a bonus.

This also gives the Jets a pretty good cap situation going forward. They have enough cap space to give Vilardi, Barron and Samberg some decent term, if they want to lock them in.

That's what I am thinking. If PLD went for a futures package then you unload your pending UFAs for more futures and we are going into a rebuild. But the PLD trade was a clear retool trade move not a rebuild, so it only makes sense to not move out your top win now talent. I wouldn't be surprised if Chevy is also making a pitch to Helly trying to keep him long term.
It definitely sends a good message to Helle.

The speed with which folks in here go from dumping on Chevy to praising his trade acumen is practically mind-blowing.

My issues with Cheveldayoff have never been about his ability to consummate a trade. He's had far more hits than misses, relatively speaking. My issues are his complacency when dealing with inadequacies of the roster, and only reacting once a situation becomes untenable. At least he understands that you can't go into the last season of a contract with four core players with a 'run it back' mentality.

For a draft and develop team, they seem very reluctant to trust on futures.

Is it possible that the reason he didn't make deals to improve inadequacies is because he hadn't found the right deals? We see how he'll only pull the trigger if he thinks he's getting full value

It goes back to the convo last summer when people we all over him for "not doing anything" when nobody had any idea what his options were

Winter is Coming
I think considering 90 percent of hfboards.com was convinced he'd be a hab and Habs fans were being arrogant and cocky and dumb and convinced pld was coming home, this is insanely good value here. Chevy pulled off a blockbuster again and only moved 1 dude. We got 2 maybe 3 or more to go.

Watch Wheeler go for Florida's 26 1st

Well, we got a second liner, a third liner, a young replacement level guy who might still develop, and a 2nd rounder in 2024.

I don't think it makes us better this coming season. Maybe in a couple of years.

I don't buy that there weren't any good deals to be had last year, or at any time he's had to move a player. He was able to get a brilliant return for Evander Kane, and that happened over the course of 4 days. I think there's far more evidence that he'll only trade a core part of the team if there's no other option but to trade them. It's never about the player not being good enough, but because they have to move them. I would like to see Cheveldayoff seeing a deal and pouncing on it. Make the team better through trades and drafting, because obviously the location isn't good enough to attract FAs.
