Ahhh.. wouldn't be a proper thread without this post from this poster.
Most people are worried about how the lowest scoring team in the playoffs is going to be able to hang with these star studded teams and …while others think it’s the 1970’a and are worried about Ogie Oglethorpe.

I will say though, it is pretty amazing how the Kings are both the least skilled and least tough team in the playoffs. I wonder if that has ever happened in the history of the league.

Maybe I have terrible memory, wasn't a strong forecheck part of Terry Murrays system but the players didnt commit?
Murray definitely had the x's and o's but didn't have the emotional engagement to get the team going.

Sutter knows how to push and motivate, which was the finishing touch the team needed.

It's also why he has a shelf life.

Hoven saying one of these events at Staples is open to being moved so Friday/Sunday dates are in play.

That's fantastic stuff, if true. Whenever we discuss Hoven, I will now have to say "Got to give him credit for calling Friday/Sunday" since these are good days to go up to the game.

That was my understanding as well. I remember Murray stressing volume shots just like sutter. So I remember them having the same game plan but Murray seemed extremely uninspired.

Terry Murray had a system where everything, especially in the Kings' zone was designed to stay along the boards, which is why we often heard him say win the battle on the boards, be strong from the dots out, and protect home plate.

After Sutter arrived the Kings still had their center coming fairly deep into their own zone to help the defense, but no longer did they just simply chip it out of the zone and hope to regain possession of the puck. With Sutter as soon as the defenseman turned a puck over he was looking for the center and to make a stick-to-stick pass to him. Possession of the puck was everything in Sutter's system.

Also, on the forecheck, in spite of Murray saying he was teaching a more aggressive system and sending two forwards in deep, it rarely happened. The first forward was trying to cut off the zone and force the opposing defenseman to use just one side of the ice to exit the zone.

Under Sutter on the forecheck, the first man in got on the puck carrier, and if possible made body contact. The second man also went in deep to retrieve the puck. The Kings time of possession in the offensive zone increased dramatically. This is often why you would here analysts say, the other team can't score when the Kings are possessing the puck in their end.

These were the most marked differences in the systems in my mind.

There's an argument to be made that if, and that's a HUGE IF, Sutter was willing to stay through a rebuild, which would've required getting rid of anyone who got tired of him, we should have gone that way. But here we are, back in the playoffs. So I digress. And I think we chose the less messy route tbh.
I am fine with a shelf life of five years if it means three conference finals in a row and two cups.

Why not Grundström? He is a physical player who will fit like a glove in the playoffs with his style.
Because in the USA we think that Europeans are easy to beat up and are just a bunch of highly skilled p***yes. You need North Americans because they can beat everybody up in the whole world. It takes murrricans to get the job done. Don't you watch movies?

You knew that Terry Murray was a goner when of all people Willie Mitchell in an interview after a game threw him under the bus. I remember he said something to the effect that the offense was struggling because Murray dictated that players basically "stay in their lanes on offense". Implying that there was no creativity allowed. That quoted portion is almost exactly what Mitchell said.

The Flames are a good deal more physical than the Kings. I expect the Calgary forecheck would present a lot of problems for the Kings.

That's a good point. Especially over a series. However they've all been close games, the Cal freebie was the difference in the last one, and either team has controlled play metrics. I feel we match up vs. the Oilers better, but I don't feel like there's anyone in the Pacific we CANT beat.

Now the Central on the other hand....

Least skilled, least tough, and the worst special teams….and they could actually win a round. So weird.

Hey, hockey friends! Are Kopi and Kempe playing tonight? They are essential for my fantasy team! Congrats on making the playoffs! Go for that Cup, again! : ))

The Kings have acquired the following players for a 1980's-style grudge match with the Edmonton Oiler's.

I actually saw Ross "Mad Dog" Maddison play for the Portland Buckaroos of the WHL when I was a kid. His real name is Connie Madigan, and yes he was a mean SOB.

Here's a story where Madigan is frequently mentioned.

I think the “shelf life” stuff is BS, Sutter has always been successful and is a sure fire HOF coach. I think the “shelf life” moniker should be tagged on the players that played under him. Once Sutter left, those teams always regress.
You've actually made the opposite point.

Excellent point.

I found the original Hollywood frame from our 2012 avatars. Not sure we want to do the exact same thing, but someone brought it up, so I thought I'd post it.
