Far too many to name. I think people just put way too much stock into the WJC when it really doesn't mean much overall.

There are so many players who will be drafted high that weren't even on the radar for the Canadian roster.

Have to remember that age plays a huge factor in roster selection. You have to be incredibly skilled to keep up with players two years older than you at that level. A ton of development happens at those ages and mediocre 19yos are often better current players than any high-end draft eligibles.

It's one of the reasons that Junior clubs tend to like their overagers, because they won't jump ship to the NHL but are at the top end of the player spectrum in juniors. I think that's another reason a lot of WJC performances incorrectly inflate value. IMO it's pretty easy (and I'm guilty of this too) to lump all WJC players into one general age-bracket, when really there's an enormous difference between a 17yo and a 19yo.

Parent/Staal were probably the best defensive pair ever in the WJC. In two years I think they were out for 1 goal against.

Didn't Justin Azevedo have a pretty great WJC? Never played a game in the NHL despite great AHL numbers and is currently dominating the KHL.

Sad story no one ever gave this kid a shot.

He never made the WJC team. He led the OHL in points, but his linemate, Matt Halischuk, made it that year (and happened to score the game winning goal in overtime for the gold medal).

Funny enough, the one with the best NHL career was the other linemate, Nick Spaling, who didn't get a chance to make the team as he was diagnosed with mono at the selection camp.

I know this is ancient history, but the Ferraro twins had to be among the most exciting non-professional players I've ever had the pleasure to witness. Very good wjc's, too. They just never made it.

Does Jacob Markstrom qualify as well? Hasn't done much in the NHL but had back-to-back solid WJC as Sweden's #1 tendy.

Looks really good this year tho. Got his confidence back

Ah, sorry. Honestly just don't watch the Nucks enough to have known that. Hopefully he regains his former self, he looked to be quite promising a few years back!

Jordan Eberle. OP said 'massive disappointment'. OK, he's not that, but I sure expected more from him. Maybe something in the water in Edmonton.

Jani Rita
Robbie Schremp
Jeff Glass
Nino Niederreiter
Igor Grigorenko
Perezhogin
Grebeshkov
Radulov
Voloshenko

Actually the two recent Russian goaltenders, Andrey Makarov and Igor Bobkov, have been really mediocre.

They still have time I guess, but it doesn't look very promising for them.

Both were great at Juniors.

Pat Falloon

Certainly based on draft position, but I don't remember him being that good in 1991 as a draft eligible.

A few other names that came to mind:

Jason Doig

Cameron Mann

Ralph Intranuovo

Jamie Rivers

Depends on your expectations. I was expecting a superstar, especially after his WJC performance.

Top scorer in last season's Stanley Cup finals and a decent start for an always difficult sophomore year. I really don't think anyone expected anything more than that from a 18th overall pick.

Does Ryan Ellis count? 25 points in 19 games as a dman.

Dman of the tournament in 2011.

I don't really think so, though I may be biased. He was projected to be a second pairing NHL d-man with good puck moving skills...and that's what he is. Really valuable member of the Predators.

I don't remember what his stats were but I remember watching Mattias Tedenby at the WJCs and thinking there was no way this kid wasn't going to be a star.

Ryan Parent is a really good one, he looked liked he'd be one of those quiet, minute-munching defensemen that would go on to play for 15-20 years.

Max Friberg too, he went from being an unknown to an untouchable stud back to unknown pretty damn quickly. That's the rub with the WJC. You always have to remind yourself when a player is playing out of his mind that maybe he's just having the best 2 weeks of his life and everything is clicking at the right time. It happens.

"Massive disappointment" is a pretty big overstatement. You knew the deck was stacked against him to be a bonafide star in the NHL, mostly because of his size. But he's turned into a very solid D-man for Nashville.

Perttu Lindgren.

Also to some extent the trio of Tukonen-Korpikoski-Nokelainen, probably the most exciting line at the WJC's Finland has ever had.

Calling Ryan Ellis a disappointment is a big joke. There's nothing disappointing about Ellis. A young defenseman at his size with such good 2-way responsibility? Wow. Talk about some crazy standards.

If you want a player in that vein who actually was disappointing, how about Matt Donovan? Had a very good WJC, was very good in the AHL, and then just tanked.
