Magnus Paajarvi

Gotta go with this one as a swede. Really hard to believe that he ended up being a bust. One of the most talented young players Sweden had had in years, didn't really have any significant weaknesses. Made the team as an underager, ended up putting up 19 points combined in 3 tournaments.

Obviously Hodgson also. People were arguing that he was better than the almighty Tavares in that one WJC, where he had 16 points. Really think that the back injury he had in junior kinda screwed his career long-term.

Alvaro Montoya

His World Juniors performance in 2004 propelled him into a top 10 pick. I don't even think he was considered first round pick potential before the tournament.

Stephen Dixon was a smart role player for Canada back in both 2004 and 2005.
Anyone else play two years fpr Canada and not get even a cup of java in the NHL?

I call this thread the "Cody Hodgson" special.

I remember people touting him as the next big thing for Vancouver, and instead he is barely a NHL player right now, was a massive disappointment in buffalo (alongside kassian), and will be out of the league in a few years. *Good job dad, nice call*

Who else you got?

For first round picks, I can't think of many. This is a high profile tournament that pits the best junior players against each other. Some may scoff at the sample size of games. But if you are a first rd pick that has asserted yourself well in this tournament, usually it's a good indicator you will be a good player in the NHL.

Didn't Justin Azevedo have a pretty great WJC? Never played a game in the NHL despite great AHL numbers and is currently dominating the KHL.

Not a 1st rd pick, but Justin Pogge was terrific as a Gold medal winning Goalie that never was a standout in the NHL.

Nolan Baumgartner

Ryan Parent

Christian Dube

Ryan Parent is a real good one. May not have put up the numbers of some of the other guys mentioned, but I remember thinking he'd be a very good top-four shutdown defenceman for a long-time. Did next to nothing at the NHL level.

Michel Riesen - the Swiss miss. Led them to their only medal in the late 90's.

Rico Fata was another. Like the Dube pick i saw earlier, hell he became a Swiss international later on but was great for Canada's juniors.

Richard Lintner was a guy that looked like a sure fire pro in the early Slovak days. Did not do much in the NHL although was a good European pro. Richard Stehlik may fall in that category as well although he has not turned into the player Lintner was.
