Guhle and Schneider will both grow into the kind of defenseman you wonder how to get your hands on. The answer is you draft them from time to time and have them coming up in your pipeline.
The future of our defense is a concern due to this, imo. Rielly, Liljergen, Sandin, Niemela. In isolation, all are solid pieces, I'm especially high on Liljergen and think he'll be a top pair RHD

But together you get a small defensive core that can get run over come playoff time. You need some big bodies that are tough to play against

Tampa during their 3 straight finals runs had Hedman, McDonagh, Cernak and Bogosian. That is one tough defensive core that could also play very well

he was arguably our best D last playoffs if playoffs mean anything.

I don't think he is declining much, and if he can come back healthy, I'd still want him, he proved he has good play left only like 5 months ago.

Amirov >>>>>> Guhle

not sure I'd use "playing for Montreal" as a sign that he is a good player (not saying he is bad)... look at their D.
We needed defenseman

Ideally you just want synergy between your forwards and defense. Tampa has a lot of big guys who can win puck battles to limit time in their own end, and clear the front of the net. Colorado likes skilled defensemen who can complement their forwards offensively and dominate the transition game. Both approaches have strengths and weaknesses, but both seem pretty useful. Then there's the Leafs, who have a patchwork defense made up of guys who are either too small or too slow and generally lack hockey IQ

Good news is that only 2 of those 4 were drafted. One was signed the other was traded for. We can use *potentially our solid peices to bring in *hopefully that what you speak of.

I knew he was Kjell’s son and that he and Ulf weren’t related despite their surnames. I didn’t remember that they were teammates.

It was through Kjell I learned to appreciate hockey names. Imagine being an immigrant kid learning to pronounce (Shell) starting with K

Threw me off completely ...

Then it was Jaromir Jagr ....Doesn't sound anything like it's spelled

I’m definitely sure. He is Kjell’s son. ULf has 2 sons who were drafted. 1 in the first round 1 in the second. Neither of whom are still playing in North America.
Just noticed your location. I too am from the 3rd planet from the sun. Small world.

1 of the 4 drafted. They traded for Cernak and McDonagh, and signed Bogosian. Drafted Hedman

If Muzzin is done, leafs defence is in shambles. It was soft to begin with and Muzzin was one of those who actually brought some physicality

The problem with this plan is if we walk into the trade deadline with cap space, we still need to put together a package that looked like the Muzzin deal to get a Muzzin replacement. Could have avoided some of these issues if we had just LTIR'ed him to begin with or traded him during the summer so we could have had a chance at a UFA replacement.

Not to mention we probably could have gotten at least something by trading Muzzin in the summer. We just don't have the third eye and ability to play 4D chess that Dubas does though

While their D may not be good, he has been. He has been real good, plays on top pair. Last game against Pittsburgh he was on the ice for over 15 mins of the 18 mins Crosby was on the ice. crosby was held pointless.

In fact in 3 of his 4 games he has matched up against Matthews, Ovi, and Crosby. They have combined for one assist against him in those games. Welcome to the NHL kid.

What would we get for a broken Muzzin @ $5,625,000 for the next two years that has all the intention of continuing his playing days and a ten team not trade? Not sure its 4D chess as much as Muzzin has no value and would likely cost us assets to move on from. Not sure I want a lame duck GM trading away my teams future picks for a quick fix
Pacioretty @ 7Mil required an add and returned FC
Nemeth @ 2.5mil for the next three years cost 3rd and 2nd(possibly two seconds)
Kulikov @ 2.5 FC

I agree and as a prospect i had no problem drafting Amirov but when you look at that draft the last thing the Leafs needed was another Amirov type winger especially considering our needs were a D with size/skill or a C , which we still need ,

and both those D were just as highly rated as Amirov if not higher so it's not like we were hoping the team went off the board to hopefully fill a glaring need in our system
