Player Discussion: Drew Doughty Thread

Of course it matters. The Kings management and Rob Blake are capable of independent thought (well maybe not), but they should be capable of independent thought.

Maybe Doughty will make it easy for Blake and take the first offer in July, but I doubt it.

It matters in theory, but start naming the teams over the years that have independently thought. It's going to be a small percentage. Bottom line is talent is hard to find. Very few people in any management, however experienced they are, willingly give it up. Lombardi couldn't even let go of Richards, and he had no talent left.

Once again, you are correct in how the Kings should handle this. They probably should've traded Doughty after his Norris win, if not earlier, when it was clear the team wasn't good enough, and wasn't going to be at any point in the near future. It's not going to happen that way though, and it very rarely happens that way anywhere, in any sport. It's unfair to expect the Kings to do it differently. If they do, more power to them, but they probably won't.

It's not fair to expect fans to pay to watch a team twist in the wind either, so if you're not going to buy tickets to watch a team wither away under the weight of cap constraining contracts for at least the next half decade or so, that's completely fair.

They're not getting rid of him if he wants to stay. He has total control of this, for better or worse.

Doughty just needs his XBOX, tasty waves, a cool buzz, and he’s fine.

Surfs up, Spicoli.

All true except the irreplaceable part. I would rather have the best team in the league rather than the best defenseman. Every year for the last 4 years someone has won the cup without the best defenseman. If Drew wants 12m I thank him for the cups and trade him for whatever I can get.

I mean, Duncan Keith is a surefire HoFer as well, he's also irreplaceable and you're already seeing that. I don't think Crosby/Malkin are replaceable either.

I get what you're saying but Drew is always going to be better than whatever else we can get for 12m, even if I'm not against trading him.

Teams in Nevada, Texas and Florida have an unfair advantage as they have no state taxes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Los Angeles has a 1% city tax on top of state and federal income taxes. I assume NYC has a city tax as well.

It would be nice if the league instituted a sliding scale of some sort to level out the amount a team in NV, TX, FL can offer a potential free agent compared to teams in LA, NYC, Toronto, ETC.

I'm sure the PA doesn't mind the lack of a scale though. That's a little bit more any single player might be able to squeeze out of a team.

Taxes are indexed. You don't pay 9.3% on your total income, you pay 9.3% any income over $56,612, 8% on the roughly $11,000 of income between $41,629-$52,612. You get the idea.

Lower income:

$0 - $8,0151.00%
$8,015 - $19,0012.00%
$19,001 - $29,9894.00%
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Higher income:

$41,629 - $52,6128.00%
$52,612 - $268,7509.30%
$268,750 - $322,49910.30%
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

Yea but I'm in that 9.3% bracket (filing jointly, so they are doubled), and even indexed I should have had more taken out, and still got a sizable refund. I have no idea why, but I'm not complaining :)

I swear I did my taxes correctly. I hope.

Would you guys be pleased with a total strip down of the organization if it meant 20+ years of mediocrity? Or would you prefer to see a retooling as the team retains the core 3 in Kopitar, Doughty, and Quick?

Ziggy - I would not be pleased with a strip down as I don't think the team needs that. I believe that a retooling would get us back to where we need to be.

At this point I would suggest the following:

1. Bring in Vilardi and Brickley next year.
2. Give Amadio and Brodzinski a full year. I think those guys can succeed at the NHL level. End the Rieder experiment.
3. Trade one of Martinez/Muzzin and see about the feasibility of bringing Voynov back.
4. I believe we need to trade 1 or 2 of our top-6, but not when their value is low. (Toffoli/Carter)
5. We are really lacking in the leadership area right now. It is clear that if Williams/Stoll/Greene/Mitchell were on this roster we never would have been swept by Vegas. Look for trades that address this need.
6. We all love how Vegas plays the game, and if we want the Kings to play like that...i'm not sure Stevens is the coach for this.

Bottom line, we know we were outmatched by Vegas but the only thing that really prevented us from winning that series was an offense that wasn't predictable and lacked creativity. We need to foster more of that in the upcoming season.

Doughty is most likely the best Kings d-man we will ever see.

He's irreplaceable. And I don't just mean for the next few years. We'll be lucky to ever draft or sign a guy like him ever again.

Look how many teams are missing a true #1.

Look at how many teams are missing a true #1 D, much less a top 2-3 D in the league for 5+ years in a row.

I waffle when it comes to moving Drew. If we were to ever go through a true scorched earth rebuild, he’s the one player I’d want to stick around due to his age and skill. But he’s also the most valuable asset we have.

I just don’t see how this team reloads on youthful depth ala Boston. Maybe trading a Carter and Martinez is enough with Iafallo/Kempe developing and Vilardi on the way.

Tough position for the Kings. I don’t know if Kopitar puts up another PPG season next year.

Kopitar doesn't have to put up 82+ points for the Kings to succeed next year. Others will have to pick up the slack namely Carter, Toffoli, and Pearson.

If the goal is nothing but the Cup, it almost doesn't matter.

How many teams have re-tooled after winning the Cup, and won the Cup shortly thereafter? Detroit? Montreal won a couple more times after the late 70's, but those are much different days than today's NHL. The O6 days are a different galaxy.

How many teams have re-built after winning the Cup, and won the Cup shortly thereafter? Pittsburgh? That's about it, and they got very lucky to have two of the absolute elite players in the league on the same team at the same time twice.

The Flyers won in the 70's, and they've been to the Final in every financial era of the NHL, but they haven't won since those days gone by.

Boston won once decades after their previous wins. The Rangers went 50 years. The Leafs haven't been to a Final in 50 years. Chicago went forever between winning.

Rebuild or retool, it almost doesn't matter. You don't usually recapture the magic, and it's tough to get it in the first place. Teams change. What wins hockey games changes. You're unlikely to get Kopitar/Doughty/Quick at the same time, all playing at their best.

False choice. There is no guarantee the Kings win a cup if they do a complete rebuild. There is also no guarantee they would suffer through 20 years of mediocrity if they strip it down. Dean Lombardi started with some fine building blocks in Kopitar, Brown, and Quick. He managed to get it done in six years. It all depends on how the player personnel is developed and managed, along with a little luck.

Odds are if they stay on their present course the core will age and retire, or be ineffective by the time they get enough of a supporting cast to contend. The large cap hits going to Kopitar, Doughty, Quick, and Brown also do not help when it comes to adding depth players. Those guys want to get paid too.

Who makes up Boston's youthful depth? Nothing that the Kings don't already have. Not one top 5 or even top 10 pick in there. A late 1st. Some middle round guys. They lucked out with McAvoy.

Not saying the Kings will reload like Boston. The Bruins weren't even supposed to be this good this year. Nobody they got from their retool trades has done much for them. They've wasted cap space on free agents. Bought/didn't sell when they missed the playoffs. Hardly the model to pattern. Imagine if the Kings got basically nothing out of re-tooling trades years later, wasted decent cap space on older free agents, and wasted assets when they weren't in a position to actually win. All after 2 playoff wins in 3 years.

Heinen is Boston 5th leading scorer this year. He was 5th on their AHL team last year. So that's, not exactly the same, but sort of like Amadio being the 5th leading scorer next year. But in a good way, not because everyone else got hurt.
