The most valuable might be Petersen, because of potential, but yeah, Campbell isn't bringing too much back. At least it's trading high on an asset though. If they find a way to get rid of Quick this summer, Campbell is likely gone by this time next year anyway. If they trade Campbell this summer, Quick is the #1 at $7m next year, and Petersen gets in the 30 or so backup games. Then the older Quick gets, the more games Petersen plays the following year.

A lot depends on what kind of years Petersen gets in his contract. A lot would also be easier if DL hadn't handed Quick a 10 year deal to cheat the cap.

If Quick didn't get a 10 year contract then his cap hit would have been much higher and LA likely would not have been able to put the team together for the 2014 cup.

This sounds familiar.

One of the biggest differences between the Kings, Hawks, and Pens, is that the Hawks and Pens were able to take fuller advantage of ELC's for star players. They won a Cup in 2009 and 2010, whereas the Kings couldn't get out of the 1st rd.

Then I don't see much point in trading him.

It's likely they either have to trade him now, at the deadline, or lose him for nothing, assuming Petersen ends up as the future guy.

only point would be to make a spot for Peterson...although nothing wrong with him being in the AHL one more year

The problem is he's going to be 25 in Oct. He's not some young prospect anymore.

If Quick didn't get a 10 year contract then his cap hit would have been much higher and LA likely would not have been able to put the team together for the 2014 cup.

I get why DL did it, but the contract made Quick essentially untradeable. Had Richards and Brown not fallen off a cliff in 13-14, they might've been alright. Although with Quick and Gaborik, they were still on the razor's edge for that entire run. Everything about 2014 is still incredible.

I wouldn't do it if I was Montreal either, unless I'm also getting something else. If they want, they can send him to the AHL, which they can't do with Phaneuf. An extra year with Alzner, but more flexibility. I also wouldn't do it if I'm the Kings, because it would likely cost an asset. Plus the sooner bad contracts are over, the better. No reason to keep adding old term to this roster. I'd rather be rid of Phaneuf in 2 years than Alzner in 3, unless it was straight 1 for 1(and only because he can be sent down without permission), which it likely wouldn't be.

I'm guessing the likeliest way to get rid of Phaneuf is a buyout. Or if you can find another old and broken down player with a similar cap hit and NMC signed for the next 2 years. Either way, there's no coming out ahead. That's the price of signing Gaborik to a long deal to cheat the cap.

I get why DL did it, and I support why he did it. 2 Cups in 3 years, and he was trying to strike while the iron was sizzling hot. Same reason he ended up keeping Richards. It was a special mix of players, and DL never wanted to break up a winning team. Within the realities of the hard cap at least. Only so many chances you get, and he knew he wouldn't be around to deal with the problems if they didn't win again.

The odds of Phaneuf being in the opening lineup are better than 75% to happen. Only way he gets off our roster is if he gets scratched for 35 games in a row and left home on road trips. He might actually show some pride and retire or at least fake an injury and ride things out on LTIR.

All we have to do is have someone sneak itching powder into his shoulder pads every day. Worked for Hossa.

My choices for who gets traded are Quick , Forbort , Lewis . Carter not yet he needs to show up first and have some value , he’s better than this and Pavelski just had a great season at his age . Phaneuf gets bought out . And if Clague and Anderson show any improvement this upcoming year , Martinez will get dealt season after the one coming up .

This is what my opinion is after hearing what Blake and Tmac said about “The Plan”

why do you want Dion bought out? He cap would be on the books for 4 more years with year 3 being almost the same cap hit.

We're so thin on D that Phanuef isn't really blocking anyone of importance from being in the lineup. Just keep him on the roster as the 7th dman.

100% agree. I just wonder why there are some advocating for his buy out this year. I wonder what they see as the benefit.

Phaneuf doesn't have fake years at the end of his contract, just turned 34, and signed after the last CBA. He's got a full $12m left to get in 2 years, and only $3.5m in signing bonuses. He's not voluntarily going anywhere. He's played 146 games over the last 2 years. What's the reason he wouldn't keep playing? To please some fans? Because he's slow? He's not getting another contract. Assuming he loves the game, he's got 2 years left in his career. They're going to go by quickly, so I'm guessing he's going to enjoy it as long as the Kings don't mind him being around.

Worst case scenario we send him to Ontario, doesn't get rid of the cap hit but opens a roster spot.

Maybe we can move Dion after his last big bonus gets paid. At that point his actual cash amount is pretty low. Perhaps a team that needs help hitting the cap floor would do it if we throw in something actually useful. Otherwise it’s a buyout. We can’t bury him in the minors due to the NMC.

Giant cap savings for one, a 1st is most definitely coming back and the opening for young guys to earn a spot aka Petersen, Luff, Amadio...etc

I'd be happy to get the cap hit but I have a very hard time believing that the Kings can trade a problem to another team and walk away with value like that. Quick has been as much of a culprit as anyone for the Kings demise. He's not been even average for a couple years and his contract is restrictive.

I honestly believe that the best the Kings could hope to get our of a Quick and Toffoli package is a second or third rounder.

I agree with your assessment but it flies in the face of accountability, which management is now trumpeting.

If Phaneuf is a bleeding gash on the ice and the coaches keep playing him, then where is the accountability to the fans?
