You should consider yourself to be a contender with where 11/8/32 are in their careers. They had to go with Budaj in 16-17, so they got another chance. Then Kopitar had a career year without a 2nd center for more than half a year. They gambled on Carter being ready, willing, and able with the signing of Kovalchuk, and lost the bet. Pearson was total trash this year. Toffoli, we know for sure, is a completely dependent winger. At least this risk didn't cost a 1st like Lucic.
Unless you luck out like Calgary and end up with Iginla for Nieuwendyk, trading isn't going to bring back the kind of talent you need to win a Cup. Carter was 32 in 2017, and Nieuwendyk was 29 in 1995. For those lamenting the missed chance to trade Carter in 2017, it was probably a couple years too late at that point anyway.
14-15, defending champs.
15-16, DL doubled down on what was likely their last best chance to win.
16-17, didn't even get off the ground.
17-18, basically stuck with what they had, and didn't have a terrible year.
18-19, the roster let Blake down more than they ever did with DL.
On pace for a 27 point drop from one year to the next. That would be the 3rd lowest in franchise history, and the biggest drop since 85-86, when they had 28 fewer points than they did in 84-85.
7 picks in 2017, and 7 picks in 2018. Should Vilardi be a no-go, it'll probably set the Kings back at least a year, but whatever. 10 picks this year, and they cannot miss with the first one, whoever they end up with. Can't do another Vilardi. Can't do another Hickey.
