As of now: Carter is a negative asset...and Quick and Toffoli are close to negative assets. Any team talking trade with Blake, the players they ask for
are surely: 2019 #1, 2020 #1, Kupari, JAD, Grundstrom, Anderson, Clague, Peterson, Thomas, Phillips, possibly Kempe. No one is calling for Carter, Quick, Toffoli.

I am not prepared to say Toffoli is a negative asset. Given he only has one year left he would be a good gamble.

Carter isn't going to retire. Not if he's hanging around the Kings anyway. At most, he/they would use his injury as an excuse to put him on LTIR. Even that's probably stretching it.

That's fine.

He misses the entire net now, with about 33% of his shot attempts from 10 feet in. 3 pp goals with tons of pp time all year. Would much rather have Luff take his place.

Yeah, if Vilardi is a bust, it'll be like 2007. Taking and missing on Hickey put them back a year. If they had taken Couture instead, or even Voracek, maybe they don't have to trade both Schenn and Simmonds for Richards. I know everything worked out in the end, but that trade did strip the team of some future depth. Because then they had to trade another 1st for Carter, in addition to the 1st that was traded for Penner, who ended up not being able to score much until the 2012 playoffs. Plus they took a Lombardi style chance on an injury prone Gagne, who didn't work out as well as Williams and Mitchell. Both Penner and Gagne sucking forced the Carter move. You wonder what would've happened had Penner and Gagne been healthy and/or productive. Does DL still get Carter? Because the top 2 lines would've been set. Luckily Carter came at a discount over what Columbus had to pay for him.

What if Kopitar doesn’t snap his ankle in 2011, and the Kings beat the Sharks that year? Lots of what ifs.

Dean always dumpster dove back in those years. Williams, Mitchell, and Gaborik were all considered tainted goods when we first got them.

That is a very good what if. They were in that series against the Sharks without him. Had he been healthy, and they got to the 2nd round, is Richards a King? Richards is 2nd on the list behind Ricci in terms of perfect Dean Lombardi players, but if they make more progress in 2011, do they wait on Schenn? Or could DL not turn down the Mike Richards, who oozed gritty leadership?

Any timeline that doesn’t include Richards coming to the Kings is likely an alternate Philly timeline. Like, a timeline in which they win the Cup in 2010.

He was too perfect a “Dean” player.

Kings still needed a Center. I doubt they didn't get Richards regardless of what happened that year. Their window opened up the year prior, they were going to go all in.

Can’t do that with Phaneuf, and those players with big contracts don’t have two-way deals, so your suggestion won’t work. You can’t just bury a contract in the minors anymore.
Does Dion have a full No movement where we cant send him to the minor? Cause if we can and if I remember correctly we can save 920K ( or so) in cap space and the rest does stay on the cap. According to Cap Friendly this is the break down for a buyout:

1st year: 2,916,667
2nd year: 5,416,667
3rd year: 1,416,667
4th year: 1,416,667

Im not sure how much LA has to pay from that, but id rather get his contract out in two years with the big contract of Kopi and Doughty at almost 22 million combined. And lets not for get Mike Richards buyout of 1.5 mil next year and almost a mil for like ever.

Carter, Phaneuf, Kovalchuk and Lewis all need to sleep in the same bed as Marian Hossa for the whole summer.

Carter and Phaneuf, sure.

Kovy was fine. WD40 is a f***stick. I blame him if anything. No reason he should of been out of the lineup or had his minutes reduced. I don’t care about his defensive shortcomings. He’s still a solid contributor on the offensive side.

Lewis was injured for a good portion of the year. He’s fine as a bottom 6 piece if he’s back next year which is the last year of his deal. He’s likely gone by next seasons trade deadline, if not this summer. Either way, I’m ok with him if he’s back.

Phaneuf cannot be send to ONT due to his NMC. The buyout would be 25% less as Ottawa would be on the hook for that amount, however, if you buy him out, he'll be on the books for 4 more years instead of 2. Better to be patient and see if the new CBA has a penalty free buy out like the last one did.

Handzus, Stoll, and Lewis were our top three centers. Kyle Clifford and Brad Richardson were our leading scorers.

Carter. 1 goal in last 29 games. 2, if you count the empty netter. avg TOI 17:00-18:00. Buku PP time. The worst top 6 player in NHL this year...or any year.

Today, the buzzwords are 'pace' and talking about skating "first 3 steps"..."edge work"....he does not have edge work. Edge work - the epitome - Patrick Kane,
Johnny Hockey...for King players, probably Kempe...Leipsic is good. Good Edge work does not necessarily make you a much better hockey player, but it helps
and making cuts, stops - starts, 3 step bursts, and power in your strides. I think your 2 legs / feet can only be as good as your worst leg / foot...I think the achilles
injury has limited BOTH legs / feet, as you cannot really have a dominant leg...in cutting, edge work...but one can be more powerful....but it's made him diminish
his skating and he can't make sharp turns or cuts...and lost his top speed. Once he's going, he's average speed and cannot beat defenders.
He can't create space and make his own scoring chances any more...and he was never a great playmaker. He gets that shot off like once every 3 games and
it's rarely from a high % scoring area.

HE'S DONE. PERIOD. I don't hate the guy. He's just done. There is no getting better at 34.5 years old. He will not suddenly become a better skater.
And he's failed every winger that's played with him.

1 goal in 29 games. A yearly basis 2.75 goals in a season.
17:30 TOI. Ample PP time. This is dogshtttt. Game over. Thanks for all you've done! You've done a lot. Now please go retire.

Oh, thanks for your contribution in helping get one of: Hughes, Kakko, Turcotte, Byram, Cozens, Zegras, Dach...possibly your replacement!!

Doughty -3 and now minus 35...in his "I'm playing good hockey season"...If LV kills it tomorrow, he may end up -37 or -38. And start fresh with a 40% raise to 11 million, for his great season.

Carter would also have to agree to it. None of these guys that do LTIRetirement do so unwillingly. Can't just make a guy disappear.
Oh I know but it would be mutually beneficial. Years of injuries have piled up. Stay in Manhattan Beach for 3 years just dont come to the rink.

Toffoli. 3 pp goals and 5 power play points. Not last 20 games....this is after 80 games played. LOL.
How do you play EVERY PP, unit 1 or 2 and have 5 PP points in 80 games? How?

Planning Ahead - no 77 or 73 on team and if they are somehow...no more PP unit.
Players with 5.9 and 7.4 shooting percentages, can't play top 6 or PP.

He was the best d-man in the NHL last year and probably wasn't top 20 this year. The Kings desperately have to find someone capable of QB'ing the PP because Doughty just ain't it.

If Carter retires before his contract expires in 3 seasons, the Kings get hit with a $3.75m cap recapture penalty for each remaining year. Not the worst thing in the world if the roster is getting turned with prospects.

I don’t think he retires. Even though it should be a safe decision based on his career earnings. I’m guessing he and Management probably thinks he can bounce back and score 45 pts next year and play the majority of the games.

If Carter repeats his performance from this year or gets worse, and he isn’t a regular healthy scratch, then you start sacrificing goats and hope he retires before 20/21 season.
In my view the issue with Carter and Toffoli isn't their cap hits. It's the fact that they're taking up roster spots from younger players. So I'd be fine with a cap recapture in Carter's case.

I'd also like to think that he could be a 40-ish point bottom 6 player at this point in his career, but he looks like he has no desire. Maybe he just views this season as a lost cause and will come back next year reinvigorated, but I'm doubtful.

I know we're all pessimistic about it, but I think there's a reasonably good chance Prokhorkin comes over. One of the advantages of being a crap team is that you can give a roster spot to a player like this.

There was a recent article in the Russian press about Prokhorkin being benched by his KHL team as punishment for not wanting to re-sign. Could be a further indicator he's not staying in Russia. This is in addition to him telling the Kings he's not signing a new deal over there.

Potential forward lines with Prokhorkin next year could look like this:

Grundstrom - Kopitar - Brown
Kovalchuk - Amadio - Wagner
Iafallo - Kempe - Prokhorkin
Clifford - Carter - Luff
Lewis, Leipsic

JAD, and hopefully Kupari & Vilardi in Ontario where they belong. Toffoli traded.

I’d trade Toffoli to move up in the draft since it’s so deep that every team might have their own top and cause a guy like Zegras or Boldy to fall... I hope anyways! Also, if Carter regains his form... which I’m betting on happening, especially with two offensive driving guys... then you can trade him or move him to the wing..
