Remember when "The Big Three" were going to take huge discounts because the Leafs were building something special and had no bad contracts?

Weird what competitiveness does for teams, huh?

Article up on the athletic featuring Willie Ds thoughts on the season

Q&A: Willie Desjardins admits he wasn’t a ‘perfect’ fit for Kings, says coaching Kovalchuk ‘a challenge’

Q&A: Willie Desjardins admits he wasn't a 'perfect' fit for...

You can certainly see that with Kovalchuk. He does what he wants to do. He's not a system player. Maybe that was just because the Kings were a mess from day 1, but Kovalchuk was out there doing whatever. He'd make those weird little passes to nobody. Wouldn't dump the puck in. Not on the same page as line mates. Not to defend WD, or any non-Kovalchuk players, because Kovalchuk, even at 35/36, still does have more talent than most on the roster.

Could be just a simple timing thing. If this were a couple years ago, maybe those guys take a smaller 2nd contract. Now that anyone really good coming off their ELC is getting all the money they can, there's no more taking one for the good of the group. Matthews is already taking up more cap space than Kopitar on his current contract, and a couple more % points above Kopitar's 2nd contract. Matthews is basically getting all of his money in signing bonuses, through the length of the contract, which is only 5 years. Kopitar's 2nd deal was for 7. Although he did sign that deal prior to 2013.

Yeah, not easy building a team.

It was an idea. I didn't say it was a good idea.

So right. Kovy's a lone gunman out there, but that's not a bad thing on the offensive side. You just need to accept it and maximize his contribution. And pair him with players that can minimize his liabilities (risk taking).

Have thought that the front office was like an Elks Lodge, but maybe the Lions Club is more appropriate.

The thought of what players would be involved in such a transaction gives me a headache.

LOOOOL 39 year old with a 6.25M cap hit. At least he's on an expiring contract, but sheesh. If we aren't getting a prospect or another piece with Marleau, forget it.

I don't know if I trust Rob Blake with anything right now.
AWESOME!!! LOL.

Maybe it works if the Kings can dump a contract on Toronto, but I don't think the Leafs have room for Kopitar or Doughty. :)

my guess would be assets coming with him...ie picks and prospects ...i wouldn't do it unless included something good.
Looks likely Zeitsev is out so need to find another dman, i think he played well with muzzin

We’d then have Marleau, Kovalchuk, Iafallo, Grundstrom, Clifford on the left side. Not to mention Kempe possibly moving to the lw is possible. Prokhorkin has played LW too. Someone would have to be going back or moved later on, maybe even 2 lw

Kempe and Prokhorkin will be staying at center. If you move them to wing, who is going to play down the middle? I guess they could start playing Kopitar 40 minutes per game.

Carter on the second line. Amadio on the 4th. JAD and Kupari have 0% chance of making the team you’re saying? Prokorkhin another center... I just feel Kempe needs a change, and let’s face it, he sucks at face offs...

I don't think we'll see Jaret Anderson-Dolan or Kupari playing center with the Kings next season. There's also the possibility of Jeff Carter shifting over to right wing, given how his play at center dragged everyone around him down.

We may not like it, but Kempe likes playing center and for some reason, so do the Kings' coaches. I guess we'll see if the new staff feels the same way. And when Prokhorkin was signed, it sounds like the team sees him as a center.

I'd say they are desperate for some leadership but Marleau is one the last guys I would pick.

I agree, in the games I watched I thought those two made a good pairing.

It's still cap management. There was no need to pay RFA Matthews that kind of money, especially if the organization was going to go out and acquire Tavares. It's too much cap space devoted to too few players that will do in the Leafs.
