love the place, can never take away all the Rangers and concert memories,
but its terribly small on all levels above the recently updated main concourse concession area

the renovation promised more space upstairs, but it doesn't seem they added an inch

yes its nostalgic,
and when you're in your seat its a great MSG,

but really, the best thing about it anymore is probably the convenient location

i kinda wish they'd rebuilt at the Post Office site (now repurposed as Penn Station extension)
but once they committed to the 10-years-ago renovation,
it was clear it would be, at least, decades before there'd be a new building

btw i also have fond hazy kid memories of the 'Old Garden' they didn't vanish when the new one replaced it

Well, we're in another cycle of "what can we do about MSG?" Certainly, rebuilding Penn Station is needed and necessary. But, there are certain intractable obstacles here. Realistically, there is nowhere in Manhattan to build a new arena. All of the areas have drawbacks, in particular in regards to public transportation. One of the great things about MSG is the ease of getting to it. Secondly, to condemn MSG by popular domain would cost NYC upwards of 8 billion dollars. Can the city (even with state aid afford that (or should they?). No. Even the offering of bonds has its drawbacks. It is also true that, even with its recent renovation, the footprint for MSG is not large enough to compete with many newer facilities. So, we are left with an aging (though wonderful) facility where infrastructure upkeep will become increasingly a problem in the decades again. But, there is nowhere to move it despite the urgent need to rebuild Penn Station. The finances to do so are lacking. So, it is where it is, in the heart of Manhattan. And even that is a major draw for free agents, it is an integral part of the greatest city in the world. Nothing against the arenas in Jersey or in Brooklyn, but they are outliers and can never compete with MSG's location. So, it is what it is and likely will remain where it is for decades yet. Oh and BTW, as someone who attended the very first Ranger game at MSG (as well as the last game in the old MSG), I've never found it unattractive. In fact, I find it pretty darn good-looking.

Can we move it out of NYC too? Pop it in a nice open piece of land in Westchester, the less I have to go into NYC the better. Thanks!

Tarrytown sounds good - build out a full new rink - then the team can practice and play in the same place!

Once the recent renovation happened, it looks like every other building in the league, outside of the roof.

Same black chairs, nice concourse for the 100 level, shitty concourse upstairs. Seats as tight as possible.

I can't wait for the Rangers to become a small market team in f***ing Westchester.
Even Staten Island is a better idea. (and yes I get it was a joke) It's a ridiculous place for it but at LEAST it's still NYC. Just with a lot more deer.

Dolan is in the process of building "MSG Sphere" in Vegas for 2.2 Billion. He's going to start another monster project so soon?

he might not have a choice depending on NY tax legislation. The Sphere was planned since 2016 (both of them)

My guess is if something like that were to happen, they would play at Barclays.

Disaster
I doubt the NHL would put any team back in there again with all the ice issues unless it was an absolute emergency, such as MSG catching on fire and burning down. They would never plan to put a team back in that building again based on the refrigeration issues

It's hard to privilege nostalgia for architecture in US cities given how new everything is.

I'm not saying knock down the liberty bell but NY City is built around efficiency. Make the best of what tiny amount of space there is left on the island.

I think the Garden has improved and it still looks enough like the Garden for my liking.

Why would we go through this again? Every stadium that gets built locally is a scam. Dolan will hit up the govt for money, build a version with more luxury boxes and box seats. And jack the price of tickets up

With the exception of Citifield, which is great, the local builds suck. It costs too much and they’re just replicas of older stadiums. It’s a racket.

Again, Penn Station has 21 tracks and 2 tunnels to NJ. That's the larger issue. The head house size is more dependent on what's down below at this point.

New York, NY is the official name of the city.

I mean, you can root for out-of-area teams if you want -Leo likes the Ducks- but we're not moving to where you live.

Rangers belong in NYC, there is just something special about hockey in the city, like seeing fans wear their jerseys throughout the city walking around, going to a restaurant or bar before the game, It would lose a lot of that if they moved out of NYC.

Yeah sure it’s a pain to get to if you live in one of the suburban counties like myself, but it makes it extra special for me to travel to the city for a game.

It's been gut renovated. Other than the outside façade and the interior ceiling, there is little relationship between the current MSG and its prior iterations. Current MSG is basically a high-end mall with Chase ATMs, a Lexus dealership, and a food court wrapped around a sports playing surface. Other than the emergency stairwells, it's not the same arena where Matteau ended the '94 ECF.

Knock it down and re-build the old building.
Knock it down and rebuild it In L.I.C. between Queensboro Plaza, Queens Plaza. 7,E,M,R,W subway lines and LIRR Hunter’s Point station (Huntington line) they can build a light train like they did between JFK and Jamaica Station to connect all three stations.
