Well, we're in another cycle of "what can we do about MSG?" Certainly, rebuilding Penn Station is needed and necessary. But, there are certain intractable obstacles here. Realistically, there is nowhere in Manhattan to build a new arena. All of the areas have drawbacks, in particular in regards to public transportation. One of the great things about MSG is the ease of getting to it. Secondly, to condemn MSG by popular domain would cost NYC upwards of 8 billion dollars. Can the city (even with state aid afford that (or should they?). No. Even the offering of bonds has its drawbacks. It is also true that, even with its recent renovation, the footprint for MSG is not large enough to compete with many newer facilities. So, we are left with an aging (though wonderful) facility where infrastructure upkeep will become increasingly a problem in the decades again. But, there is nowhere to move it despite the urgent need to rebuild Penn Station. The finances to do so are lacking. So, it is where it is, in the heart of Manhattan. And even that is a major draw for free agents, it is an integral part of the greatest city in the world. Nothing against the arenas in Jersey or in Brooklyn, but they are outliers and can never compete with MSG's location. So, it is what it is and likely will remain where it is for decades yet. Oh and BTW, as someone who attended the very first Ranger game at MSG (as well as the last game in the old MSG), I've never found it unattractive. In fact, I find it pretty darn good-looking.
