I know he's not what he once was but 2 3rds seems low

Yeah Devils fans are counting on his name, and shot I suppose getting a good return still but I'm skeptical. He'd be a bottom pair guy who maybe plays on PP2 I think for any acquiring team, and if two thirds is a comfortable price to acquire what he brings I think he's gonna be yours.

The other fact on Subban is that he is making almost no real money, I don’t think teams will care too much about double retention if NJ is willing to take a contract back to negate the cap hit. I honestly think people will end up surprised with the Devils return if they move him. While I think his days of fetching a 1st round pick are long gone not I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a second plus a meh prospect plus the cap dump for him

Just how bad is Subban now? Is he a #5 on a good team? #6?
He is a decent #5 / good #6. Not enough consistency to be a second pairing guy anymore. Some games he plays very well and looks like he has flashes of play when he was in Nashville. Makes some boneheaded mistakes where he thinks he is still a Norris Dman and doesn’t have the ability to do what he wants to do.

What happened to him anyway? Its not like he is ancient. He is only 32 and it seems to be 2 or 3 years since he was any good. Injuries?

I think we can all agree that PK is getting traded but he's making 9 million dollars, I think he's getting double retention to bring him down to 2.25 million.

At 2.25 million I think PK will have some value, I'm not sure how but I believe he can help some teams.

I'm intrigued by what she might get.
1) No, we can't all agree on that. We can agree that he's overpaid now, but that's a step from getting traded and not a small step.

2) Double retention is extremely rare. You can't just assume that happening. Yotes are maxing out their picks but how many (primary or secondary role) double retentions do you see them holding?

3) Who's your she in this deal? The deal itself? You English speakers dropped the masculine/neutral/feminine thing when the Germanic Saxons and Angles moved to Britain. Obsoleted, my man.

With those caveats, Subban at $2.25m is an interesting idea. Not sure of his ideal placement in a contender. And the play style doesn't fit every team/coach.

I don't think he makes too many mistakes, but he is too slow, why he loses skating races and is late for the pucks. Nowadays he is a good #5, but nothing more.

From an outside perspective, footwork is not quite what it was. He was always a sloppy skater with quick footwork, but he's slowed down a lot.

Problem with this idea is Subban's trade value double retained at $2.25m AAV is at best a 2nd round pick, possibly a 3rd.

Whereas the cost for the third team to retain 25% net of Subban's $9m AAV is likely a 3rd round pick, possibly a 4th.

That doesn't leave a whole lot of meat on the bone for New Jersey. I think they'd be looking at a 3rd or 4th round pick worth of value as their return in a Subban trade with double retention.

Yeah, actually makes more sense to try and find a trade partner that has a one year cap dump you can take back in lieu of external retention and add that player to the trade.

Why would a third team retain on Subban for two years? I don't see anyone needing Subban enough to pay what it would take for two teams to retain.

Realistically he would bring back a low package of picks 3rd 4th maybe with retention. Could see some minor interest from teams looking for some D depth

I'm not sure about that. The Devils have already paid $6M of his salary, so the third team doesn't have to retain much real money.

Subban has more value to NJ than a 3rd round pick. He doesn’t get traded unless a 2nd is received in return. I rather keep Subban for his experience (NJ is an extremely young team) and steady play on D than get a 3rd round pick.
