there are some nice sized free agent college prospects. The center from Minnesota is 23 but has size and RH shot. Pens need a couple years here of trading and getting back prospects and draft picks. Dubas knows the deal here. He signed a 7 year contract knowing the core was just about done. He can restock the farm, have cap space up the kazoo to add a couple key parts.

It sounded in his presser like he planned to flip these guys for a younger NHL players…wouldn’t it be wild if he did this deal with the Canes only to turn around after the playoff and flip them right back to the Canes for Jarvis or Necas lol
Yeah, I heard that. Caught me by surprise. But hey, whatever works. If he can flip these guys into an actual established, "good" player, by all means.

We have prospects now!!!:highclap:

Yager is such a smart player, what I saw from the WJC is f***ing exciting. So smart out there and it's not just offensive abilities, a responsible 200 foot player!
Hard to see him not at least being a defensively responsible top six winger at the NHL. That shot is so good. Like a RH McCann, but he seems like he had better vision than McCann at the same age tbh.

I find it absolutely insane how different Brayden Yager is this year compared to last year. He went from a playmaking center that didn’t shoot a ton, to - sniper with 32 goals on the year and 78 points. He hit 78 points total last year and still has 16 more games to keep adding.

Yager was in discussions to be a top-5 pick the year prior to his draft year. He dropped because he apparently concentrated more on a well-rounded game and it caused his production to dip. I'm not sure he ever pans out, and I think at best he'll be a McCann-esque guy, but at one point he was extremely well regarded. There's something there.

I think his upside is pretty sky high, as mentioned, he's extremely smart. Like you said, he was seen as a high pick heading into the draft year but some projected him a one dimensional goal scorer. So, what does he do? Shows them he can play D and focuses on that and and playmaking at the cost of his goals not exploding as much as anticipated. How many 18 year olds would be smart enough, willing, and able to do that? As a reward, his draft stock fell because reasons.

Call it "coping" if you want - I know some will - but the more I learn about the players the Pens got for Guentzel, the more I like the trade. You can never tell for sure, but all 3 prospects look legitimately good. Although I'll miss Guentzel a lot, I think Dubas did pretty well to get a bunch of guys with legitimate NHL potential. Really excited to see these guys and Yager at camp.

I haven’t followed Yager much this year so I just did some binging. I really like what I’m seeing with him. And some of the clips I found he looks pretty quick and doesn’t seem to float around.

And then this year, goes back to being a sniper. The determination and mental fortitude of Sid!

Any hope for Tankov? I hope he's still on their radar, he looks like a good combination of size, speed and skill.

Somewhat. He lost a year due to a bad injury (broken neck) and put up "just okay" numbers this season. But his playoff performance was quite good (7 goals, 1 assist in 7 games).

Back to Pono, Koivu, and Cruz:

Elite Prospects had them ranked 36, 34, and n/a in their drafts. And their hockey senses are 6.5, 6.5, and 5 respectively. 5 is "at least NHL level". Ilyin was only a 5 in that but I suspect they'd give him a higher rating now.

Did we ever get clarity if Yager can go to the AHL next season?
I know he's too young, but someone said had played enough seasons in CHL to be eligible for AHL (or something lika that)

You have to start somewhere. Jake is the first shoe to drop. Dubas did what he could and I applaud him not pushing for an extension. He sees with some cap space and hopefully moving Smith at the draft for a 2nd helps with the adding of young talent. Pens top 10 pick, three seconds unless Canes go to SC finals then a first. Dubas will move more players after next season for prospects and picks. Yager is a really good center that can be a 2nd line center as he matures adds strength and size .Add in the draft the next 2 years, Pens can add RD, and more centers in the draft and at least Dubas now has a base of young talent to develop. For next year add a big physical RD, a physical LW for 2nd and 4th line and go from there.
Bunting Sid Rakell
FA Geno Rust
DOC Eller Puusitinen
? Poulin Acciari

I'm not sure how much of that is him transforming his game vs just his age and maturity giving him the confidence boost of "I'll do what I want". Either way, it's great to see. I would be extremely interested to see what he could do with a pure playmaker like Sid.

Bunting-Sid-Yager would be a very interesting line to see next season if Yager can make the jump.

I wouldn't hate if he took the Jordan Staal route - start as a shooting wing then as comfort builds, shift to center.

The rule is - 20yo or must have played four seasons in the CHL. This is Yager's 4th season in the WHL though his first season was split, so I'm not sure if there is a #games requirement or not but I'm quite certain he is eligible.

Yea they are all solid but it's funny how often we trade/draft guys who are current teammates of prospects we already have in the system. Saves some travel for the scouts I guess.

yeah! he's nhl ready except for one thing and that's strength. and I'm not sure I like the progress in that area.

Is there anything to this guy Jagr brought over to Pittsburgh for the Lemieux fantasy camp - Tichacek? 21yo, playing pretty well for Kladno, but undersized. Jagrs clearly campaigning for him.
