Penguins rank No. 27 in Scott Wheeler's prospect pool rankings.

"The addition of their first legitimate top prospect in years and first top-15 pick in more than a decade does help give the Penguins’ pool a rosier outlook than in years past. Their system also has some underrated depth at the goaltending position. But the Pens still have one of the thinnest prospect pools in the sport, with a steeper drop-off after the first few names on their list than even some of the teams below them in this year’s countdown.

They’re one of only a few teams that didn’t meet the 15-player maximum set for the ranking, with just 12 prospects that I felt were worthy of listing."

Idk the methodology, just sharing

He's a Junior and still not putting up big numbers. While I am happy that he's continuing to progress, I'm just not sure how he ultimately fits. His defense isn't great and I'm not sure he's got the offense so he's in a middle grey area that doesn't bode well for a Sullivan run team.

"Criteria

To be eligible for inclusion, a skater must:

Be under 23 years old. We know that by the time a player turns 23, he is largely done with the steep upward progression we see in prospects and will begin to plateau.
Not be a full-time NHL player. This is the arbitrary section of the criteria. Here, I trust my judgment for whether or not a rostered NHL player is still likely to bounce between levels more than I trust any pre-determined games played cutoff. Preference for inclusion as an NHL prospect is more likely to be given to teenagers than 22-year-olds.
Either be signed to an NHL contract or selected in the entry draft, without the expiration of either of those rights. Players who are signed to AHL contracts are not considered.

To be eligible for inclusion, a goalie must:

Be under 25 years old. This age criteria is more reflective of the typical goalie trajectory, allowing for the continued consideration of a small number of 23- and 24-year-old goalies who are very much still prospects.
Not currently established as one of their NHL club’s two go-to options.
Either be signed to an NHL contract or selected in the entry draft, without the expiration of either of those rights. Goalies who are signed to AHL contracts are not considered."

Poulin suffered an injury, but it doesn't seem serious as the dreaded lower body injury. I do think he will be up to the big club at some point. Probably the trade deadline will open up a couple spots.

Heck, I'd sign him.
If they sign any college free agents, those contracts don't take effect until 2024-25, right? Because they're at 49/50 contracts, and I have to figure there will be some comings and goings around the deadline. I think they should be aggressive in going after college free agents and it would be helpful to not have to worry about adding their contracts until next year.

We can always use solid defensive prospects. Marino worked out well. That said, Canucks fans weren't that high on him so who knows.

Pens need RD D prospects in the worst way. Assuming Karlsson in traded after next year, Pens will have a Letnag and whoever they bring in after this year. Hopefull they finish top 10 draft and get lucky in lottery to grab a top RD as well.

I think that will come to us or a Center if/when we become sellers.

Poulin is a bust at this point, he shouldn't be on any ranking. Its been nearly five years now and we've seen almost nothing from him. You can blame coaching, injuries or whatever but he has yet to be a reg here in PIT. At some point you got to give up the ghost. MAYBE he'll be a serviveable player down the road likely in another organization, but here, start the bus!

I completely agreed with this but now I am slightly hesitant for a couple reasons to label him a complete bust.
First, he's still only 22. We seen plenty of players breakout a bit later than others.
Second, he seems to have more drive and certainly has far better production since his hiatus from the game. It seems he has silenced whatever demons he was facing for the time being. Can he keep it going when he returns from injury?
The rest of this season should tell the tale. He should get a callup at some point. I wouldn't cast him aside just yet. The odds are certainly long. But let's hope he can become a productive at least 3rd liner at this point.

If we’re still counting Puustinen who was in the same draft and is 2 years older then Poulin should obviously still count. He’s not even waiver eligible yet.
