Pickering was not just flat-footed but heading in the wrong direction so tough to recover there. Decision issue rather than skill issue. But he should get used to coaches demanding he be aggressive while having zero forward support lol.

Another question about Yager: if he is eligible for the AHL next season, would that burn a year of his ELC? Or would it depend on how many NHL games he got.
I'm a simple man and couldn't figure out how to double quote someone, but like I said up there; I'm pretty sure since he won't be 20 by Dec 31st of that season, but will have completed 4 years of WHL eligible seasons he would qualify to play in the AHL.

Because he'd be signing his ELC as a 19-year old, that again, doesn't turn 20 until after Dec 31st, his contract would slide one more year as long as he doesn't play his 10+ NHL games.

Not gospel, though.

I’m inclined to agree. For that reason and also because MJ figures to be taking a pretty huge step back with Firkus, Calvert, Savoie and Mateychuk all aging out, I’d say bring him over.

I’d be inclined to finagle a way to get Ilyin over too but that seems less likely.

Lots of PP goals (this is his 10th out of 22) but that also seems like a Moose Jaw thing. Teammate Calvert has 15/28 on the PP and 2/4 for Savoie since joining them. Firkus only has 6 though.

Yager is at least 2 years away here. He really needs to get a NHL caliber body. Just not sure the lanky D man, Pickering, will develop into a top pair player. But time to move on replenishing the talent in the system by moving on from those who will not be part of the next group. Jake this year and then after next year Rust, Karlsson and give Geno his final year in Florida for what one can get. Pens don't have to tank as much as get back young talent and picks to retool the system and roster.

Meh thats a thing of the past. He is bigger than Benson who is already playing in the NHL.

I am not he is ready but the main thing isn't the NHL body anymore, it is speed to process the game. His shot is ready, if he can start to process things at a high level he could be up sooner.

Look at Guentzel, looks like a reasonably athletic middle schooler.

We desperately need Yager to be in the NHL in a top six role next season…

Not really. If anything he should be a third liner. We need good depth.

When we won the cup in 16. Sheary and Rust were able to provide scoring in the bottom 6th and be elevated at times. If Yager makes it, let him get weaker competition and break in on the third line. It is where I want Poulin now too. Don't force the guy into the top 6 but also don't force him in a defense first 4th line.

Let the third line have some skill in scoring. Look at last game. Moving Rakell down with Eller and Puustinen and they score. If Smith isnt back after break I would run.

Jake - Sid - Puustinen
Doc - Geno - Rust
Poulin - Eller - Rakell

Spreads out the youth and doesnt ask Poulin to make an impact right away.

 No we don't.
Assuming Sullivan is here, we can’t even make a decent top six at this point and score goals there…he’s got a great shot…it would be too much of a luxury to play him in a bottom six role when were a one line team…I hope he’s ready next season especially if Dubas is an idiot and doesn’t trade Jake for a young player or prospect who’s top six worthy lol

We are so far from that 2016 team that comparison is useless lol…we’re closer to a beer league team than a Cup winner

Play him in the NHL when he's ready. I don't really care if it takes another year or two--whatever's best for his development. If he acquits himself in camp and the team can't help but keep him up, cool. But to throw him in the top-9 immediately next season just because is stupid and panicky.

I said we need him to be ready…not that I would throw him in there if he wasn’t ready lol

benson isn't setting the world on fire.

it depends on what you want from him. imo he could play a wing with a deadly shot now, but if you are looking for a more complete player and play center he needs to get stronger.
edit i haven't seen him play since befor the draft so there's that

It'd be more of a discussion if this team didn't always pack the top-9 with vets, all but eliminating any fair or legit competition in camp and pre-season for spots for younger guys/rookies.

Doesn't really matter if it takes Yager longer to be fully NHL ready than Sid's got years left. Whatever ends up with the best finished product.

Also fire Sullivan. Don't want that loser in charge of molding the game of the next crop of talent this team drafts.

I think you missed the point. The point is most teams let players develop into the top 6. The penguins refusal to is crap. Sullivan treats the bottom 6 like its only purpose is to prevent goals and doesnt allow skill to develop. I reference 2016 because that was the last time we kind of saw that.

Overall I am saying Yager doesnt have to be top 6. If he could play top 9 that would be enough on a normal team.

I am old school here. He needs to mature and get S&C program here. He has the skill but the grind just kills these guys. Pens going nowhere so let him add the strength and development to be here in a couple. He can be a very good RH center which with Poulin and whoever they draft next couple of years is the retool Pens have to do.
