Ok so let’s be clear, the Penguins weren’t happy or confident with Matheson and upgraded to Petry.
It won't be enough and they are putting off the inevitable and necessary re-build only incrementally. There's an old adage in sport that it's better to trade a player one year too early than one year too late. Take a look at the Penguin's roster and you see the wall that they are about to hit. And those mega contracts will tie their hands operationally. It's a road map for disaster.

Uhhh this isn't true at ALL and is only your contrived opinion.
They LOVED Matheson, but THINK Petry MIGHT be an upgrade
He isn't. Not anymore

People saying he will reach 40 points on a team where Letang is the PP QB..?
Petry couldnt take the PP QB job away from Chris.Wideman.

I’m excited to see what Matheson can do. Also interested in how Petry will perform on a good offensive team.

I wonder if Pittsburgh will survive the next round of tanking as a franchise.

Next time, they most likely won't get a Lemieux or Crosby. Spoiled as they are, they won't be happy when they have to draft Nico Hischier 1st overall.

Way too soon to predict quality of 2026/2027 draft. But if the end up with next legendary player, NHL is rigged 🤣.

Wonder if the 1st pp unit will now feature Matheson.

Lots of talk about Petry Vs Matheson etc

Not enough about how a future fourth round pick will eventually have a better career than Ryan Poehling.

The Pens think they fleeced us by getting a young player drafted in the first round etc but the cap relief alone we got was a huge boost forward, Pitlick signing alone made this trade worth it as RP development was frustratingly arrested.

Don't think that's completely fair to Poehling. He has the tools to turn it around. Danault didn't look great when he first came to Montreal from Chicago.

We shall see, we shall see. Hughes was definitely making sure with this move that he was moving disgruntled players out. Team chemistry and morale are clearly important to him.

It all depends on how they mesh. If Matheson fits and plays well he'll be a better deal for the habs because he's cheaper and younger even if he's not as good. Petry may not play a lot of power play time but if he has an easier time carrying the puck because teams actually have to worry about the Penguins forwards he could be very effective. You have to expect Petry's game to decline before too long, but then at least he'll sync with the other old guys and they can get a generational 1OA again.

The fact that everyone is expecting Pittsburgh to get a 3rd Generational Player in a row after Lemieux and Crosby is bothering me a great deal

Odds are that that is unlikely. I also doubt that the Pens think they fleeced Montreal. Poehling is no longer waiver exempt and odds are that in Montreal he doesn't stick in the lineup. Pittburgh's depth is atrocious, so he has a better chance of grabbing a spot there. But he's in the same camp as a guy like Cale Klague last year.

Hopefully Poehling is the tail end of Montreal's atrocious development era.

To be fair the Blackhawks were a mini dynasty. We had nobody preventing Poehling from making our team.

That was the year they had Anisimov as 2C who's not even as good as Dvorak, and Kruger at 3C who had ZERO!! goals and 4 assists in 41 games. Hardly stiff competition down the middle.

And it's not like he was lighting up the AHL either.

They're milking the cow as much as possible before she ends up dry for a few years before they draft the next Crosby/Malkin/Lemieux/Jagr.

They need the money above all else.
I don't think their financial situation is dire. I think they believe they have a shot as long as those three are around.
Technically they do, but they just have to improve their depth. Malkin makes a bit more than Drouin...they're not in a bad cap situation.

Agreed. As long as Crosby is there, they will remain relevant and players want to be around him. Crosby was like texting Malkin and Letang... like f*** you are leaving me on a island by myself

It's not dire but they know how quickly their fans leave the ship when the team is shit. They're probably looking at adding a lot of padding for the next time there's a rebuild.

Well spotted 👍 Thanks for point it out.

I get the sense though that even back then Danault was a more well rounded player.
