Other Sports: Philadelphia Phillies: The Road To .500 Continues Into Red October (2024 Edition)

They're paying a supersub $14M a year from 30-34 years old?
He had one good season at 27, but otherwise is a slightly below average hitter with poor plate discipline.
Good utility player who can play 2B, 3B, RF, was a decent SS but probably has aged out at that spot.
Doesn't hit well enough to start at 3B or RF, and not sure his range will hold up at 2B.
Good depth in the age of short benches, but . . .

Nobody here could have predicted this being abused. Apparently 1/3rd of the month is deferred. I believe that puts them over the 1 billion mark in deferred money now?

Seems icky.

Lol at that massive Edman overpay though lol
I believe Dodgers are now over $1b in deferred money. I don't know anywhere near enough of tax code stuff, but generally when a player defers money (or someone accepts an annuity) you're giving up the ability of getting less of an immediate pay-out (which you could invest over time).

I wonder if some of this Dodgers stuff is to avoid paying California's high taxes? Blake Snell signed a 5/$182m deal

It has a $52m signing bonus and half of each yearly salary is deferred.

Apparently the signing bonus paid out is taxed by the state the player has residency in when they sign the contract. Blake Snell resides in Washington state and it has no income tax.

Baseball seems to be the most broken Sport in NA. What happened the last years is remarkable Bad with all the scandals and bad press. But as long as they get millions and millions nothing will change.

So lets go phillies :D

Per Jayson Stark via the Athletic via the NY Times? I guess they own it now or something?

“There are a variety of (rule change ideas) that are being talked about out there,” Manfred said. “One of them — there was a little buzz around it at an owners’ meeting — was the idea of a Golden At-Bat.”

The Golden At-Bat? What the heck is that? That’s what you’re thinking, right? I can help with that.

OK, what is a Golden At-Bat?
What if a team could choose one at-bat in every game to send its best hitter to the plate even if it wasn’t that guy’s turn to hit? That’s the Golden At-Bat concept in a nutshell.

Too gimmicky. I do wonder how it would work out in theory if that golden batter was already on base. Besides being too gimmicky I feel it would be exploited in some way and lead to much controversy. Part of the appeal of high tension baseball is seeing who can come through in the clutch and often non-star players do

its contra any sport rules. Its a team sport. If you only want the stars to shine, play the game with 4 batters each team. Dont understand this shit! Maybe just play only 4 inings cause we only want to see the star pitchers..... its so stupid

f*** that. If we are doing a golden at-bat rule I want to see a rule like the NBA used to have with the 3-point contest where if they hit the last ball in a rack it was worth 5 or something. I want to be able to call the double HR rule and have the chance to double the runs if you hit a HR during that at-bat. But first you have to play Plinko and figure out how many double HR balls you get.

If the team uses the golden at bat then the other team gets the opportunity to change which hitter the opposing team uses for 1 at bat - Uno reverse card!

Let's add the Banana League rule where it's an out of the fan catches a foul ball while we're at it - make it a true home field advantage to have people in the seats.

f*** it - ghost runner starts on second every inning!

I think I could get behind all of this. Mage Baseball Great Again!

Can you imagine the foul ball rule at MLB stadiums with opposing team fans nearby? Would be breaking up foul balls like a DB trying to break up a catch.

Sounds like they tried to trade Bohm for Gilbert or Kirby.

Funny part is the Phillies were heavily linked to Gilbert in the 2018 draft but I think his velocity dipped throughout the year and they backed off and took Bohm instead.

What's your gut tell you with Bohm? Sounds like they're not interested in having him back.

Considering one of the rumored reasons is the Phillies thinking he lets himself get too affected and it slumps him... Don't think him having an entire off-season of Phillies trying to trade him, failing to find a taker and then bringing him back is going to do wonders for him.

Phils seem very motivated sellers on him.

Problem is they have a replacement in Miller, but he's probably a year away.
So this might require a platoon with Sosa and a LH 3B.
But all they have right now is Clemons.
Kempe had a good showing in the Arizona Fall league but will probably start in Lehigh next year, and is RH. His future is probably that of a supersub.

Just came here to post this lol

Obviously you ask high first but sheesh. Does this mean they actually don't really want to trade him?
