While the Cano deal is disgusting, I think it's a good move for Seattle, because sports in Seattle (Seahawks best team in the NFL, Sounders biggest drawers in the MLS, NBA and NHL looking at Seattle) are huge right now and the Mariners need to become relevant again. This move does that and makes them an attraction to other FAs. They're looking at other big names and are in the Matt Kemp "sweepstakes"

The guy I sit next to at my new job is a Mariners fan, and he said the team only has $36 mil spent on the team next season (I think $21m to Felix alone) before Cano. They also just got their own TV contract, and have money to burn.

As for Papelbon hitting the block...nice timing, after Detroit finally signs (overpays) a closer

My guess is closer by committee until someone emerges. Bastardo probably gets a shot at it too. Diekman and Aumont were thought to be potential closers at one point, weren't they?

Diekman never was. His ceiling probably looks higher now than at any other point in his career, after the way he threw late last season. Aumont was though. He still has the talent to close but who knows what's going on with him and the team.

I think Bastardo would get the first shot, but it would be an audition/committee thing for awhile.

Aumont has closer stuff but doesn't know how to throw it over the plate. Even in the minors at the end of the year, the kid just walked everybody.

in 35 IP in AAA, he walked 38 guys. He can stay there for the rest of his career as far as I'm concerned.

If you want to think about scary control in the bullpen throw in Aumont
Phillies(MLB) 1.914 WHIP (6.1 BB/9)
LHV(AAA) 1.879 WHIP (9.6 BB/9)

and recently acquired Brad Lincoln
1.579 WHIP (6.3 BB/9)

Furthering the notion that Amaro doesn't seem to even look at stats.

He significantly undervalues walks in terms of producing runs for his offensive players so perhaps he looks at pitchers the same way. If a guy walks a lot of guys it's not that big of a deal because walks don't get you runs. (in his view and old school non-sabermetric Dusty Baker types).

When the truth is that the more players you put on base the more runs you will score as an offensive and the more runs you will give up while pitching.

Roy Halladay will forever be one of my favorite players. I loved him on the Jays before he was a Phillie (so much so that I asked for a Halladay Jays jersey in 04.) One of the games good guys and a hard worker.

Hope he enters the hall as a Phil and a Jay.

Gotta nail it if you do. Like Chris Sale.

I don't think Brown's stock will be higher than now.

Amaro, nail something, hah. He's like Holmgren. He's made a couple good trades but he's made some god awful ones. Just like when there are Flyers trade speculations you gotta hold your breathe for Ruben and Phillies ones too

We do not need starting pitching. The one thing we have is young starting pitchers. We don't have offense, Amaro. That's why we keep losing.

And Roy Halladay retiring just makes me so sad. If anyone deserved a World Series, it was that guy. Baseball and life are colossally unfair. He didn't deserve to go out like that.

Don't sully Homer's good name by associating him with Amaro.
