Tom Brady developed in an NFL that bears little resemblance to what QBs are asked to do today. There's a quote out there from Seth Galina of PFF that I love because it sounds completely absurd on face value and the more you dig into it, the more you realize it's true.
It’s not in the same universe as “true”.

Here are the top QBs from 1994.

Again, the point is not talent. The meaningful bit is that the complexities of the QB position have increased to such a degree that we're no longer comparing apples to apples.

You could not have picked a better list for me to illustrate my point. On that list the second youngest guy is Brett Favre. Despite being pond scum as a human being, Favre played a vital role in the evolution of a play that's been run for decades. The full story seems to only exist in archives at this point, but here's a link to the evolution of the Mills play, as coined by Steve Spurrier. To this day, it's the best sports piece I've ever read:

The long and the short of it is that current QBs have wildly different demands today even while running plays that have been around for decades.

After I posted I looked at the ages and it is interesting that QBs were not as protected back then but look at all those guys in their Thirties.

Will read the article, thanks.

I don't even bother comparing any QB after 2000 with QBs before. It can't be done. And it's not like hockey where it can be done carefully, I think it's fully impossible.

In the 90s and before you could win Superbowls with an Alex Smith. No problem, build a good team for the era and it's done. That kind of guy is very unlikely to win now.
what do you mean “that kind of guy”?

“75% of high school quarterbacks are better than every NFL quarterback before 1995”
Exactly like hockey players from the 70s and middle schoolers today. :)

A one-legged guy.

For serious though, the "safe" kind. In the modern NFL you aren't going to win it all managing the game. You have to be able to stretch the field out. Paired with an excellent defense that kind of QB good for 2-3 safe slow TD drives can get you into the playoffs, but is deeply unlikely to score enough to beat a real offense. Heck, its hard enough for a game manager to win out in the regular season. But Alex Smith playing 30-40 years ago? He'd have been perfect.

A Colt McCoy who can no longer really run the bootlegs he requires to consistently make passes is not going to help you on that front.
I’ve resigned myself to the fact I’ll likely tie on a last second sack.

After tying last week on the DeVonta Smith “lateral” that resulted in -14 receiving yards, which put him at 39 for the game and we get 1 point for every ten, has broken me.

The cards stink so let get that out of the way. Saying that the only team in nfc that remotely concerns me is 49ers. Plenty of time for jimmy g or Christian MC to get hurt again. But if they are healthy that offense is SCARY!
