OT: Philadelphia Eagles (NFL): When You're Up, It's Never As Good As It Seems, And When You're Down, You Never Think You'll Be Up Again

I hear what you're saying, but I have to admit that there's an element of the team playing sloppier once they knew their QBs were out (leading to more penalties perhaps, and generally less hope/fire to win than usual even if by a small percentage).

Also, time of possession is kind of San Francisco's "thing" & clearly that was out the window as soon as Purdy was unable to return.

So I think the Eagles should be the favorites, but I'm not at all comfortable. They're the best team we'll play all season. FWIW, we almost beat the Chiefs last year and we weren't as good/they're probably worse this year...so take it for what it is.

Time of possession is kind of our thing as well. San Fran could not hold this team to field goals. Every red zone opportunity ended in a td. Good teams don't give up touchdowns.

the chiefs had zero timeouts and when mahomes went out of bounds there was less than 10 seconds on the clock.
As we saw above, i was incorrect on the time out thing. That situation doesn't prevent them from attempting to gain more yards and make a field goal attempt.

The whole point being that the refs somehow decided the game by calling the penalty is wrong in that not calling a penalty on something so blatant is inserting themselves in the game even more so.

The refs had already decided the game in KC's favor by that point anyway

After seeing the takes in the wild today, I think the OL isn't getting enough praise. They're getting some, for sure. Just not enough.

Same goes for Hargrave. Of course Reddick made bigger plays, but without the benefit of end zone angle film yet, Hargrave was the other guy that really jumped out.

Second level tackling was my biggest concern and that felt pretty good based on a live viewing. The misses were splashy but infrequent. At least anecdotally.

well I hope you know you are alone in your opinion. The game was clearly decided by that 15 yard penalty.

Wait do people still think that late hit shouldn't have been called?
yes.

It was such a tough game to really evaluate the eagles D, because without Purdy I'm sure the run keys were the focus.

If you go on espn right now on the front page, they literally say " a penalty that decided a game "

why are you so stubborn.
Who is being stubborn here? A guy committed a blatant penalty and it was called. Not calling that penalty would insert the refs into the game even more than they already were by calling the penalty (and not calling others). It wouldn't get any more blatant.

Hard to judge in the 2nd half, you could see the heart ripped out of the SF defense by their offense's futility.
On the other hand, it was obvious Eagles were going to run the ball, and the SF defense couldn't stop them and keep the game close.

Reddick made big plays b/c the 49ers used a TE to block him - caused by the need to double one of the DTs b/c it's a faster route to the QB from DT than the edge - pick your poison - if you split the OT out to block Reddick you'll have bigger interior gaps to protect.

The late hit should have been called, yes.

But the other 17 or whatever missed calls on the chiefs should have been called too, that missed block in the back was atrocious. The missed roughing on Burrow was atrocious and so on.
They could have called two holds on the late hit play, thus, replaying the down, but they missed those too

That doesn't mean it shouldn't have been called
Beef, you can call a wide variety of subjective calls throughout a football game. it can be argued holding or offensive pass interference could be called on 50 percent of passing plays. So yes that was a penalty. but it was a penalty that did not allow for any further plays. To lose a game on a subjective call is basically a ref deciding a game, and the other side of the coin was to allow two equally competitive teams play out the rest of this game in overtime. Which would allow for the players to have more say in who wins the game and hence give more satisfaction to consumers.

As a viewer of sports all you want is for the players to decide the game. I am ok with the blackhawks winning the stanley cup. They were better than the flyers. If i was a bengals fan I would not be ok with losing to the chiefs last night.

This. Chiefs were getting all the ticky tacky calls (in addition to the legit ones). Bengals weren't getting anything ticky tacky and missed out on some obvious legit ones as well.
