There was a thread about the value of Brandon Carlo a few days before the Leafs acquired him. It’s pretty crazy to see the contrasts in tones. Leafs paid more or less in line to what people were saying, and he was being described as a big young top 4 RHD who the Bruins would be crazy to give up without overpayment.

Yeah the general perception of Carlo seems overly romantic, I at least have called him out for being overrated for several years, though. His advanced stats and concrete stats have been bad for years.

Also, keep in mind that person x saying one thing and person y saying another doesn't mean that the tone changes, it just means that a different person was talking.


Let's just say that I am not impressed with these "defensive defensemen" who are crap at defense. Just because a player is bad at offense doesn't mean he's good at defense. He can very well be bad at both.

Timmins and Dewar are both waiver fodder. Dewar would probably have went unclaimed - absolutely useless player. Colin Blackwell 2.0. Cardio merchant.

Timmins may have been claimed since he has some offence and is a RHD. But he has the game sense and defensive acumen of a beer leaguer. He should not be a regular roster player on any competitive team.

Agreed with not getting a perfect score this TDL, but Tre did very well. For me, a solid A would’ve been if he flipped Domi/Jarnkrok + for another top 6 capable winger.

I’m ok with the inflated price for both Laughton and Carlo. It was definitely a sellers market this TDL, and both Laughton and Carlo came with retention + term. 1 more year for Laughton, 2 more for Carlo. Extremely tired of the same song and dance of wasting futures every TDL for UFAs who play 1 round with us and then leave. At least we can avoid that crap next year for 2 holes which we permanently plugged now.

Laughton as 3C I’m not sold on. But we’ll try it out and worst case he shifts to the wing. He’s definitely a 3rd line capable player who can spot in on the 2W if needed.

At most times of year, yes, they are waiver-fodder.

However, at the deadline, when every team is looking to add a depth piece or two, these guys should have had some semblance of value -- even to a bubble team like Columbus, Ottawa, Detroit, Calgary, Vancouver, etc.

Again I'm of course nitpicking here.

Amazing what Brad has done to rebuild the Leafs Blueline. Bringing in OEL, Carlo and Tanev all in one year is impressive. Nobody can say that they don't have a good enough Blueline anymore.

How can anyone say that? The guy is 28 and still many years of hockey left. The picks and prospects may never make an impact in the league. However I liked Minten and didn’t want him to go

He had 2 glaring needs on team - a 3rd line centre and a top 4 right shot defenceman; he filled both spots, on guys with term that have excellent contracts.

The reason he doesn't get an A from me... comes down to 3 things.

1. The insane amount of assets he had to give up - 2 Firsts, Minten, Grebenkin.
2. The poor return he got on Timmins & Dewar.
3. The fact that while Laughton is likely going to be a 3rd line C, you can't help but get the feeling that the Leafs are still relatively "weak" in this department.

The Avs went out and got both Charlie Coyle & Brock Nelson. The Stars went out and got Mikael Granlund leading up to the deadline. Is Scott Laughton better than Yanni Gourde at this point in their careers? I'm not sure.

Granlund was the real miss imo. I wanted Granlund and L.Schenn.

Carlo can be a top pair guy if he’s playing with a true #1 dman with offense. On a cup contending team 2nd pair dman again paired with someone good offensively and ok defensively.

As a bruin fan I'm glad the Bruins got a more than decent return and hope the leafs absolutely suck in 2026. As far as Minton, never seen him play only know what ive read about him, but I hope he turns out as good as Tuukka did when everyone was saying Pogge was the better goalie to get, but the Bruins wanted Rask all along, now hopefully its the same with the Bruins and Fraser Minton.

I think what is so important for Toronto here is they actually have size on their blue line now. Especially for the playoffs, Carlo can actually clear Tkachuk/Bennett from the front of the net and stand up to their toughness. We all know Toronto doesn't need more soft skill guys.

If this is what your expecting from Carlo your going to be largely disappointed. He's just the exact opposite of this, he's not physically intimidating and plays a rather soft game. He depends more on positioning, stick skills and a high hockey IQ, but he's not going to make anyone, let alone a Tkachuk or Bennet think twice about going to the front of the net.

I like this deal a lot. He’s a guy we’ve needed for a long time. He’s still relatively young and is signed for a few years at a good cap hit. Worst case scenario, the leafs can probably flip him to a contender for a 1st in a couple years.

Only if your bottom 5 bad, and in know way do i see them sucking that bad, but anything from the 6th overall pick to missing the playoffs would justify them as sucking for me. Don't see it happening thou, but it'll be nice to root against them all year
