You know I'm trying to get better at all this so when I say I get what you're saying and I acknowledge the point you're making at the screenshot bit, you know I'm trying to internalize it
But you also said what I was already going to say. In this case, the ball should already be out. This is the top of a 5 step drop it looks like. 1-2-3-4-5-bang. The pocket is immaculate. Kenny Pickett makes this read. It's not hard to identify man on the outside when a blitz is coming. This is high school stuff. Get the f***ing ball out to the best slant receiver in the world. He's too big and fast. Get the ball to your dude for the easy 6.
The fact that he's still holding the ball in the screen cap is the entire issue
Yep, good read.
I said during the game that what I think happened here is that the jumping pass rusher spooked him off of it. He looks to me like he knows that's where the ball should go and when. He starts loading it up. Now good QB play finds a way to get it there by changing arm angles if getting it batted down is why he stopped, but it's complicated.
When I started learning how to watch film, I'm so thankful that someone drilled into me how important it is to make sure you're not meta scouting. What Calcaterra does there is irrelevant information to Hurts'process because it's not where he is supposed to be looking. You have to strip away what you see. That's meta knowledge. You're looking for players who make good decisions based on their information, not yours.
