Pheonix Copley of North Pole, AK...The Copulator is legit

He's currently a slightly below average NHL goalie. Average being the #16-17 best in the league. He's probably playing around 20th let's say range wise in these 12 games. Which means he's BY FAR the best option for the LA Kings. But that's not saying much. Average performance, or near so, is a huge step up. Hopefully he can keep it up.

When i talked about Portillo, the Buffalo Peeps were even willing to trade his rights for Walker or any other RHD

He is a behemoth 6'6 goalie from Sweden playing right now for Michigan University where he took the starter goalie job as a fresh man.
Portillo is rated within the top 10 NHL goalie prospects and was also named a USHL 1st All Star in 2020

I would be thrilled to get his rights for Durzi or Walker.
We might open a trade proposal on the trade thread to see if that opinion changed
sign me up.

I think Durzi is too much for a guy who is not signing with the team who drafted him.
We could get Portillo for nothing, if he has a smart agent and can read a depth chart it wont take long to see which team has a wide open highway to NHL playing time.
I would offer a late pick or a plug extra D like Walker. Buffalo has almost no leverage here.
When Portillo doesnt sign in April the price will drop IMO.

Petition to correct his name to Phoenix Copely, because that’s how i’ve been reading it and thought posters were just misspelling it.

He's good but he's declined in performance each of the last 3 years.

Save percentage over a stretch is absolutely the most important stat. Goals against average is absolutely a team stat and reflects the team in front as much as anything - It’s the stat I pay least attention to when looking at goaltending in all honesty.

We can start getting into high/low danger shots if you want I guess. He’s 37th in saves above expected at -0.5, 37th in wins above replacement, 6th in rebounds per save (Petersen is 2nd so make of that what you will). He’s 37th in high danger unblocked shot sv% (Quick 54th, Petersen 65th). He‘s 17th for medium danger (Petersen 3rd. Quick 55). 11th in low danger (tied with Quick and Petersen is 5th).

Have I missed anything?. Most is in line with the sv%, which is why it’s rarely worth looking at the rest.

As I’ve said I wasn’t criticising the guy, just pointing out that he’s been solid and nothing more or less. There is a reason he was available as our 3rd choice. It now seems like I’m trying to take him apart, which I’m not but I am certainly not being selective in my assessment.

What the numbers do tell me is that it’s definitely mental with Cal, he’s the better goalie in medium and low scoring scenarios but panicking in the high danger situations. That definitely supports the eye test.
What these numbers indicate that since he is large in control goalie , he doesn't give shooters much net to hit and they are firing the pucks wide or high like crazy.

Youre the guy Todd uses for things he does with his right hand
Lmao it seems like all of Todd’s devout cultists seem to be pretty emotional when you talk about him. Unfortunately there’s some stiff competition you have to go against to be in his good graces. Erect an indomitable will and climb upon the shaft of glory for it stands mighty for you.

Fee-onyx wins for the 11th time since Dec. 6 and backstops the Kings best all-around performance of the season.
It was the only night game so the entire league got to see that beauty.

This player who was organizational depth five weeks ago has single-handedly sparked a remarkable month of hockey. I think its a great story for the sport because he has taken the long road to get to the league and might never have gotten a real shot in another organization. The fact that he is nailing his opportunity now that it has arrived is really worth saluting.

I just gave you the extra numbers because you implied I was cherry picking stats, which I clearly wasn’t.

Sometimes, he's a little too casual. Like when he copulated up on that first goal with that weak poke haha. Great run by him though. We need to pray that Quick finds his form in his next few starts before Copley turns into a pumpkin. It may never strike midnight this season, but there's a lot of games left.

Darcy Kuemper was 10-1 in 2017-18.
Without him, the Kings don't make the playoffs, I think.

Too bad all they got for him was Toby Reider...

Copulator? Geez. This, after the water bottle bukkake hockey facial?

That's all on Biz and Doughty, dirty dogs, dont get near that lol

Save % on low danger shots: .970 (24th Best)
Save % on medium danger shots: .893 (15th Best)
Save % on high danger shots: .758 (9th Best)

*Compared to all goalies with minimum 20 games played.

Copely is in the upper echelon of goalies against quality scoring chances, but he's bottom tier when it comes to making routine saves.

The cool calm collected copulator has saved the season from sucking (poetic device: alliteration)

How are all these posters who pooped on Copper?
Now they have been disgraced and will not even show their face on the Copley threadz./
Total wussies!

As usual, I don't see anyone pooping on him, I see them calling it like it is. You can cheer for the guy, be proud of what he accomplished, root for him, and still think he's not a long-term solution.

I stand by what I said on Jan 9th:

"I tend to agree, but I don't think he's the guy to take us to the next level.
At the top % of the game, that'll make a difference. Look at the Boston game--the biggest difference was Swayman saved their asses long enough to turn it around.
I agree that you don't want to hide your problems with good goaltending and I fully agree that was Copley does best is NOT LOSE us games and that's the most important first step. It's nice because it puts the responsibility back on the team D. But when we start running into Bostons, I think it will make it apparent that Copley is merely very good--and for now, that's a good problem."

He's still hovering .900 night to night, that's exactly where he was a month ago. Beyond the stats I'll say he does have the knack so far for a timely big save simply by being cozy in position. Just like a month ago, just what the doctor ordered for now. Gonna need a lot more than .900 to go deep, though.
