Not much to write about Tuomaala's game, but the whole team was sleepy and shitty. Saw some good things. Hopefully he gets more games.
The key will be if he can be on the radar for world juniors. A 2nd round pick in their 19YO year should be a lock provided they perform. This is someone the Flyers said they had in their top 20 at the draft.

To be fair, 2-3 of the top 20 list are likely not even names; just stick figures with giant arm and chest muscles.

They 100% plan on drafting this dude next year and trying to teach him to skate.

Didn't The Hockey News draft preview have Tuomaala in the mid-late 20s too?

It’s definitely a positive that a moron like Lappy can coach his own moronic systems.

I don’t even necessarily disagree that an AHL coach can have his own imprint. I wouldn’t want an up and comer shackled by a has been. But lord knows Lappy is not that. His systems are drawn up on napkins with crayons.

THN had him 28th.

They are almost 100% useless now. It's not like it used to be when we survived on hearing their opinions - they slashed a ton of their staff, and I get the impression that it is more of an aggregator of various opinions now rather that the result of in-person views. They just don't have the numbers of people needed to get any useful coverage.

I thought the Phantoms were better coached last season than under Gordon, certainly the players who came up seemed better prepared. Now that they actually have some talent, we'll see if that translates to AHL success.

No offense been reading for years how you always say the phantoms have talent. They are "stacked".

I've said for a year now I didn't think lapi or the phantoms did well with av system and did much better once that was lifted after he got fired.
Some validity to that.

Their record indicates they still sucked.
Being broak on a thirty thousand dollar budget is different than being broke with millions. From top to bottom you are only going to get so far with the talent in the organization. I thought lapi did a pretty good job of maximizing the talent he had available

They would have been if half the team wasn't in Philly or on IR last year.
They ended up starting around 6 ECHL players.

Which is probably why Chuck added Brooks, Marody, Belpedio, brought back Connauton and Seeler, etc.
An AHL team needs a core of experienced AHL+ guys to go along with your prospects.
Since our strength in prospects is on the wing and defense, adding two AHL+ centers will help in development and evaluation.

I think he over did it on the AHL vets.

In a normal franchise they wouldn't have got York (30 AHL games) or Frost (24 AHL games) at all.
In a normal franchise, Frost would have had a least a full season in the AHL and York would have spent all last season there.

Kyrou had 43 points in 47g in the AHL his first season out of juniors, next season back in the AHL for 16g and 15 points.

Jake Guentzel, after 3 years of college and a season with 46 points in 35g, went to the AHL for 11 games. Next season, started in the AHL, put up 42 points in 33 games and forced a promotion.

Frost had 29 points in 41 AHL games, got injured the next season, had 19 points in 24 AHL games before he was recalled last season.

Ideally you want to have one at each position with a couple tweeners in there for call ups. The lack of depth on the big club puts someone like brown in the NHL where he doesn't belong. There's quite a few long term prospects in the system as well so they should thin out this year too.
