So what exactly defines a "successful season"? Critical terms should be clarified here.

Especially since there's a bit of an inherent Catch-22 involved.

A "successful season" for the Canucks, is probably one where they can get Pettersson signed to a long-term contract extension.

Plus, he doesn't entirely have a lot of choice in the matter just yet. He's still under team control for the time being. He also doesn't seem like the type of competitor to just completely sit out a season over this kind of thing. So...
It's 2023. If you tell the team you want out and you're not signing, they're trading you. They are not holding your rights and playing the "You can't leave, we own you", game. All these organizations want to improve their roster as soon as possible. Trying to waive your fist at somebody ain't happening these days.

long time Canuck fan here. I’ve never heard a player say something similar to this before. Yes they All say they want to win. every player wants to win, but to say it affects his decision to want to sign this is “kinda” new to us. Let’s see what happens with this circus. Or else we hearing EP to Zona rumours. Lol

Thinking now they may go after Tatar to help secure a playoff spot
I was looking at their cap and there is room

But they have that Mikheyev IR. If he comes back they are in trouble. I don't know what's going on there. Really, they need him back healthy

Sure, nobody is taking it right through to just losing the player for nothing...but teams have also shown that they'll play a little bit of brinksmanship to take it pretty close to the wire.

Offering him $14 mill per year for 8 years would likely be successful in his eyes.

Maybe. given the Matthews deal though, i'm not sure that even gets it done. I'd sign Pettersson to that an call it a success.

We've entered the insane world of NFL QB Salaries. Each "franchise guy" has to get more than the last. $14M is more than Matthews so that's fine...but the difference in locking that in for 8 years instead of 4 with the chance to renegotiate another "highest salary" deal in the midst of his prime adds another concerning wrinkle to things.

What’s his definition of successful? Firm on playoffs seed? Just squeak in the playoffs enough? Just improve the season record at all?

Other people have already pointed out why this isn’t a doomsday quote possibly but also who knows what his standards are to decide. Probably signs a long term deal even if they’re still mediocre because big players moving is too fun and they’d likely happily overpay him however much he’s already worth

All the Nucks can do is be sincere about being in win now mode and have an administration that EP has confidence can get the job done. If he won't sign now he has to go.

As usual you never cease to amaze me zero:)
Truth hurts? They are at different stages but still suffering from similar results.

One team is failing to make the playoffs that should be

One team is failing to go deep in the playoffs that should be

As if he has a choice as an RFA. Going luck staying home not getting paid.
He can elect to just sign his qualifying offer next spring. That'll take him directly to UFA status the following spring. He can also elect arbitration or even sign an offer sheet if one is presented. It's not unlike the Tkatuck or PLD situations. Remind me how those situations played out.

He would go to arbitration and secure a bigger contract than his QO. All the Canucks would be doing is decreasing their return the moment he only does a 1 year contract.

The only good thing about this is he is a RFA and Vancouver will get assets back.

The problem is that it's Vancouver making the trade and they will lose it badly.

Yeah, in the past I've seen a lot "don't draft this guy, he doesn't want to stay here, he'll leave, etc.". I have no problem with that risk, players like that you should be able to get quality and quantity in the deal.

But uh, yeah, I don't have the most amount of faith but I'm really happy this isn't JEB's trade to make.

Mikheyev is 100% ready to go, it’s Pearson that creates an issue if he’s back

Just front load the bejesus out his new contract.

Literally vet minimum salary and massive signing bonuses a-La Matthews, Marner etc etc

That clown Aquilini got this organization into this mess becuase he is obsessed with spending money and having zero patience. So spend to keep your best player.

Nothing wrong with that. It sucks to lose.

Yeah, if anything this forces managements hand one way or another, so I actually like what he's doing here. If we're ass next year, some fans are going to be pissed if he does want out, but how can anyone blame the guy when he just put up a season that should've been in the discussion for the Hart (McDavid still wins regardless) but is instead toiling away prime years on a team that has no real playoff aspirations. We get a haul in return for him and can do what this team should've done all along - commit to a legit rebuild (Just in time for Gavin McKenna who seems to be tracking as someone who could be viewed as a generational prospect in his draft season).
