It still feels so, so bizarre that after all the effort the league has put into making the Coyotes work - to the point of taking the reigns themselves - that now, as the team was trying to hype up an auction to secure land for an area, *now* is the time they decide to pull the plug.

Means the NHLPA either really, *really* hates Mullet, or the league really, *really* doesn't trust AM to complete the process. Or both.

1. It doesn't matter if you're a fan of the cap and/or revenue sharing or not, the owners want both of them. Play by the rules that exist, not the ones you wish existed.

2. The franchise did go bankrupt a long time ago. Not even technically speaking.

3. I'm not dancing around anything. I've been pretty open about my thoughts re: the entire situation. The difference is, I recognize how things go in the real world and I operate within those constraints and solution problems accordingly, not come up with pie-in-the-sky ideas that have no chance of ever happening like way too many people want to do.
Rules changes happen all the time in leagues. Pretending that this is some permanent static model is wrong. League needs a soft cap now.

Its a great team for Utah to get, despite the owners preference its easily better than expansion. Vegas isnt happening again, so Seattle vs Arizona to start out with?? Id take Arizona all day long.

And itll be great for those players too, finally playing for a team thats willing to spend & ice a winner rather than cheaping out at every opportunity. In Arizona that team had no hope of making noise in the forseeable future, even with the young talent, but now they will.

They would be morons to give up on the market. It's way too large of a market to ignore, especially when they've spent decades building it as a hockey market.

They will give up on the Coyotes, but if and when the arena situation is resolved, the NHL will absolutely return to the Phoenix area, it would idiotic not too.

It’s absolutely ridiculous to drive this towards being a 36 team league

OK. Go stand outside of 1 Manhattan West in NYC and scream at all the NHL folks as they enter and leave, let me know how long it takes before you break them and they agree to put in a soft cap.

Again: quit wishing for rules you want to have that aren't going to be put into place, deal with the rules you have to play by. One of those two approaches will get you a hell of a lot farther in life.

IMO the only "unconventional" part is the apparent 2-step process for transferring the team. The fact that the Coyotes will "exist in limbo" is irrelevant until/unless a new team lands in the Phoenix area. If a team comes back, it could be the Coyotes. Or the Cactus Wrens. Or the Armadillos. Or whatever. And, it could have the same colors or completely new ones. Whatever the next owner wants.

The Washington Redskins Football Team Commanders, a longtime staple of the NFL, finally buckled under Dan Snyder's ownership. A franchise with a sellout streak dating back to 1968, that once had a season ticket waiting list at least well into the 5 digits (6 digits if you believed the team), saw that sellout streak finally end (which for years it was being propped up, much like Nebraska's football sellout streak has been) and that waiting list dropped to 0.

That's not because Washington won't support an NFL team. It's that Washington won't support an NFL team run by a narcissistic asshat that lets the team plummet toward the bottom of the league and his only concern is how can I squeeze more money out of everyone else for my own enrichment? If Washington responded like that, it's naive for anyone to think far less established markets with far less established teams would respond better.
The nuance might be that the Arizona new team might not need a franchise fee

Or maybe it's just symbolic so the league can say that they didn't really fail in Arizona yet, or just something to keep the hardcore fans hoping.

Only way a soft cap works if it satisfies the 50/50 agreement.
So going over $5 million will cost team $10 million. Maybe make it $15 million to help with escrow.
But in reality, can’t see it happening.

whos the 4th then?
Kansas City has said thanks but no thanks..... they're now focused on trying to keep their current major sports teams from jumping to Kansas from Missouri.... despite the age of GEHA @Arrowhead as well as Kauffman Stadium... the Royals were exploring downtown stadium at last report.... and much of the KC talk had been around Pittsburgh ownership looking there before their current arena was built....

Hence, team moving.

Thats only the case if Meruello gets the new Yotes with his exclusively right thingy. You really think after all the shit he and his cronies pulled since he's owned the Yotes he is going to fullfill the requirements for a new franchise ? I certainly don't

Maybe the issue there is they want that door with Meruello open in case no one else stands up.

Or maybe there is a legal issue with pushing him out
