I'm over Casey DeSmith. He comes up small in big moments. He had a chance here with Jarry hurt to have a run of strong games and he's had one good game out of four. It's not enough.

At a $1.8 million cap hit, he needs to be more reliable than he has been, even as a back-up.

Given their upcoming schedule, this is a game they couldn't afford to lose. Glad they didn't for a laundry list of reasons, but giving up three in about five minutes is no winning recipe.
Yep…must win…everyone in Metro getting points tonight except Canes

He was fine in Boston. 2 goals allowed.
But I agree he's below the standard he's established here in Pittsburgh this season.

The result was fine in Boston, but I thought he looked shaky. On normal ice in a normal game, I think Boston would have pressured him a lot more.

Regardless, your last sentence is the key. He's well below the standard, especially for his cap hit. You could save almost a million swapping in Tokarski.

Yep, that's what I called for in the game thread

Letang Petts
Petry POJ
Rutta Smith

Dumo/Friedman as our #7 and #8

Ruh fast tracked outta here
I wouldn't even go as far as keeping Dumoulin as our 7th, I would just move him now to be honest. I would keep Friedman up as the 7th as he can play LD/RD and so can Smith, so if an injury does occur, I think we're fine, as Friedman and Smith are already more reliable than anything we've seen out of Dumoulin the last 2 seasons.

I just think he's someone they can still get something out of, a 3rd? A 4th? A team will want to add him as depth, which I mean yeah the Penguins should as well, but Dumoulin isn't even the right depth for this team, neither is Ruhwedel. They both make the sort of error that would turn the tide against a team in the playoffs, assuming we ever make it out the 1st round.

I mean, if you want a competent back-up you are likely taking a huge risk at paying one less or paying more for one. Desmith is what you get at 1.8 mil.

Sullivan’s quoted after this game are just absolutely shocking.. he’s proud of their effort? Lol
You'd think he would be more like "We needed a better team effort defensively, we dug a hole deep going 3-0, but the effort to fight back was a positive but then the bad habits we need to get out of, resurfaced and we almost let the Canucks tie it after a 5-3 lead."

But nah "GREAT JOB BOYS!"

I assume he’s referring to Letang’s father’s death, but like.. I dunno man.

DeSmith is pretty inconsistent, but cap wise yeah I agree, the issue isn't as much goaltending as it's been the sloppy defensive play, this team will give us maybe 2 weeks worth of solid team defensive play a season, but then hang their goalie out to dry more often than anything. For me, I have valid reasons to despise him, but I mostly just wanted a back-up with Playoff experience, because no matter how good these back-ups are in limited games here and there or for stretches, their collective playoff experience is about as much as Jarry or less, or even more in some cases.

I thought that flight to be with their teammate was pretty normal stuff, but of course the Pens made it seem like it was something completely abnormal and they did something special that no one else would do.

What about their sticktoitnevess?
"We played the game the right way, I really liked our stick-to-itiveness."

I think you can get better consistency at $1.8 million. Or at least someone who isn't out of control in net. It's something that's always bothered me about DeSmith - he's way too active in net. He's like Fleury was at his most frenetic, only Fleury was far more athletic and capable of recovering when he slid out of position or overplayed a shot.

He was.

I'd send down O'Connor, call up Puustinen.

Guentzel, Crosby, Rakell
Zucker, Malkin, Puustinen
McGinn, Carter, Rust
Poehling, Blueger, Kapanen
carter prevents me from comprehending or enjoying any hockey game.
Hated him in Philly. Didn't like him or the Kings team.
Hated the trade for him.
Thought about suing Hextall & Sullivan for his two year extension

I don’t really like DeSmith, but Tokarski was swimming all night too.

Winnipeg/Carolina back to back is going to be tough.

God I hope we beat Carolina for once. They're tough as shit but I'm tired of them just relentlessly grinding us into paste. Maybe we can repay the favor for once.

Prolly not but a man can dream
Play Tokarski lol

I mean in regards to Letang, yeah the team has to be emotional.

He had a stroke not so long ago, then his father passes away, if anything, this has been a rollercoaster for Letang and his family, really feel for the bloke. He's an emotional player as well so taking the time to be there with loved ones is nice for him at a time like this.

In that sense, yeah what Sully said was perfectly fine, I thought he said some usual bs about their play, without that Letang stuff.

The shitty part for us is....

NJ - 2pts
NYI - 1pt
NYR - 2pts
Carolina & Buffalo have 0
Detroit isn't that far behind the Pens either, also put up 2pts today.

We likely lose one or both of the upcoming games. After that we probably get Petry back which is huge.

I think we make the playoffs. Isles look just as meh as us. Buffalo was who I was worried about but they’ve gotten spanked the last two games and their goaltending is just no working.

Lol…no…

Burn in hell Yohe.

Didn't see the entire game, but why did POJ have so little ice time?
Because he was not very good at all. That would have normally been a good explanation, and true, but for the fact that Rutta and Ruh were quite terrible also with Petts not far behind. Scarily, Dumo was one of our best two D-men on the night.

We showed a lot of the warts, but winning after being down 3-0 is something, and certainly it was entertaining.
