To @Gurglesons point I think Smith has really looked good with the puck in the o-zone.

He's doing a good job up top on the PP. I'd like him to be a little more decisive sometimes with the puck but he is keeping pucks in and isn't panicking with it up there.

As for POJ I'd like him to keep a regular spot. His upside is so good. But I know I'm the biggest POJ homer on here.

Smith's bread and butter is in the offensive zone and on the powerplay, so it doesn't really surprise me much that he's excelling there. The thing sticking out to me though is that I'm not seeing any sort of defensive issues that I thought he was going to have. He's playing legitimate minutes right now and I'm not seeing any sort of issues with him being out of place.

He's a valuable piece if he's just a PPQB and strong in the offensive zone. But him having a positive impact on the transition game and at least holding his own defensively? That makes him even more valuable.

So explain Dumo's ice time in any other game?

So you asked a question and then got pissy when it was explained to you?

Petry needs to hurry the f*** up

Letang too

I'm gonna have a coronary if Dumo sees 20+ minutes of ice time again
I just worry the idiotic decision Sullivan will end up choosing.

Sending Smith down, keeping Dumoulin as a regular, etc etc. When really, our pairings should be something like this:

Pettersson, Letang
POJ, Petry
Smith, Rutta/Friedman

With Ruhwedel waived/traded. Maybe swap Petts and POJ, but really that's a solid group, until the Idiot-Factor that is our coaching staff says "Howdy!"

Somehow we got out losered tonight
Maybe it's just me, but sure this game is a win for 2pts, but somehow it still feels like we lost.

There was not any dominating effort against a team that is all kinds of f***ed up, yet the entire team and Pens media almost put themselves on the LTIR patting themselves on the back vs the Coyotes....

THE Arizona Coyotes...

Yep, that's what I called for in the game thread

Letang Petts
Petry POJ
Rutta Smith

Dumo/Friedman as our #7 and #8

Ruh fast tracked outta here

It's an extremely small sample size of course, but Dumoulin-Smith as a pair has been downright dominant at 5v5 so far. In 51 minutes of ice time, they're at a 3-0 goal differential with a 66.32% xGF%. Today, they were at a 15-1 SF-SA and a 84.32% xGF%. Dumoulin has clearly fallen off at this point, but he seems to be doing really well right now while playing with Smith.

I think a part of Dumoulin's early season struggles are that he was playing with Letang and Letang was also dogshit to start the year, so they both were bringing each other down with their bad play. Having Dumoulin being a mentor piece for Smith seems to be helping his game improve. The issue is that you can't run with that when healthy.

PP scored, didnt give up a shorty, Geno looking great, 3rd string goalie in, Smith is good, lots of positives. Yeah we are still a tire fire defensively. But Ill take the win and the entertainment over a frustrating loss.

I appreciate the last sentence

In terms of D pairs to run with when healthy, I think you should go with:

POJ-Letang
Pettersson-Petry
Smith-Rutta

I think my comment about Dumoulin playing with Smith above can also be applied to Letang playing with POJ. Historically, Letang has played a safer game while playing with a younger player and I think Letang feels too comfortable taking risks he shouldn't be taking when paired with Dumoulin. POJ clearly isn't a 1st caliber guy, but you're hoping that pairing him with Letang makes Letang play smarter and safer. But what they'll probably do is just play Pettersson with Letang and Dumoulin with Petry, while POJ and Smith rotate on the 3rd pair.

As an aside, I think I'm partially talking myself into moving both POJ and Dumoulin to see if you can get a long-term top-4 LD for Letang. One way to help that top pair is to put a young guy with Letang, which will make Letang play safer. The other way to help that top pair is to get a defenseman today that Dumoulin used to be that's good enough to cover up Letang's flaws.

Given their upcoming schedule, this is a game they couldn't afford to lose. Glad they didn't for a laundry list of reasons, but giving up three in about five minutes is no winning recipe.
