I'm fully expecting the Pettersson trade to be something like Pettersson to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson (defenseman) and a 2026 2nd, with Dubas noting that Elias is a near NHL ready contributor that will slide into Pettersson's old role.

It's a deal that isn't necessarily "bad" but is so underwhelming that it just aligns with the rest of his moves. Just thorough meh.

Without retention this was a good return. We'll have more flexibility to take on a salary at the deadline. A 3rd in '27 and a high 5th is solid.

Looking beyond this trade, what is important is looking at the big picture.

Pens are adding quantity of picks over the coming few years.

Up until now, they have eight extra picks in the next three years, and they are nowhere near done.

With the assets added for Eller, the Penguins have 10 selections in the 2025 and 2027 NHL Drafts and nine in 2026. As of now, they have three first- and four second-round picks over the next three years.

That is what rebuilding teams do. The hit rate on picks is low, especially after the first five or so picks in the first round. So, you stockpile picks to rebuild.

Given that I'm pretty sure the Pens don't have a time machine, or else we'd all be watching Mario, Jagr and Crosby playing in their primes together, then I'm afraid trading him before the current contract isn't an option any more.

I hate when blokes use that like "Oh but if you fire Mike Sullivan, you won't find another Mike Sullivan" and completely miss what that whole saying should mean.

The Penguins fired Therrien and found a Dan Bylsma, if you fire a Dan Bylsma, you're looking for another Dan Bylsma - same shit. You're just looking for the next new coach that had an incredibly positive impact on the team and made the right changes. Mike Johnston was the outlier there, lol. But even when Edzo was fired, you get Therrien, then Therrien wore out his welcome and you got Disco, etc etc you get Sullivan. So the next "Mike Sullivan" is quite literally any new coach.

Because Dan was just a rookie coach in WBS, Sullivan was just a sucker fish to Torts from Tampa, NY, and Vancouver after his years with the Hawks and then was in WBS and got the gig. Neither of those two were some insane up and coming can't miss coaches, they were maybe going to build towards it with more time, but 24 & 54 games for each in WBS before they got the job. Dan was more interesting because he had zero head coaching experience, he was an Assistant in the AHL and then finally got the WBS job after 3yrs as an Assistant with the 1 with the Ducks farm and 2 with WBS (behind Todd Richards - Assistant in Nashville now).

I wanted Rust traded 2 summers ago. That would have been the best time, this past summer would have been the time you could still move him without having to retain or add much. Right now unless there are the same teams that wanted Rust back then, that still do now, you might have to add or get a 3rd team involved to retain salary or take back a bad contract that isn't a rental (like another Hayes type of situation).

Contenders would still want him for his playoff performances, he hasn't been in one in 2yrs and as much as Rust is a Sullivan glazer galore, I think even he wants to play in the playoffs so he might waive to a team that wants him and is a perennial playoff team, well compared to whatever future the Pens have right now anyway. I thought the Avs would have made sense but they got Lehkonen back and Nichushkin is set to return after this weekend if he's cleared, but their right side could still use someone like Rust.

Dubas needs to be smart because if Nashville keeps tanking, they will also be a big seller and whatever ideas of decent returns he has in his pea brain, will become less if he's not shopping his wares a little harder on the market. I'd probably aim for that Rangers 2nd and two prospects from the Avs.

I see the Dallas Stars as a way to keep the 2 old guard and surround them with youth, you don't need Sid to be the top player in that situation like the Stars don't need Benn and Seguin to be top line players anymore, they just need them to lead and still produce at a respectable rate.

Geno has full control over his situation. There will be no trade unless he agrees to be traded. I think Geno wants to say that he doesn’t want players like Rust, Tanger, Karlsson etc. to be dangled/traded. These guys are his friends and he wants to play with them until retirement.

I believe getting into playoffs streak would never ended in Sid and Geno era, if they'd let go Sullivan years ago.
They somehow can drag through a shitty roster, but not a shitty coach or both.

Pens management/coaching also been so bad with picking and developing prospects.
