Why wouldn’t you try Tokarski if Jarry is allegedly hurt? Could he be that much worse than this version of Jarry? It might not be the worst idea to have an insurance plan for when DeSmith gets hurt and Jarry shits the bed come playoff time, if we even make it.

But what’s the point of having a back up when the coach has a lifetime contract? Hell, Tokarski is 33 years old - Sully should love him.

Before that Habs fan comes in and insists Petry has been terrible this year, I just looked at his stats on the year and he's actually been pretty damn solid for the Penguins statistically. He's only been on the ice for 2 goals against on the PK, which I didn't realize.

He's providing Matheson's offense while eating Marino's minutes and matchups and adding physicality to the defense. I don't really know what more he could be doing to be helping the team.

Hes been as hoped. Solidifies the 2nd pairing, is physical, can provide some offense for Genos line.

Also, looking at their PK ice time, I don't even really see the need for keeping Dumoulin anymore. The Penguins current PKing defensemen are Dumoulin-Rutta and Pettersson-Petry. Dumoulin has been on the ice for 11 goals against, Rutta has been on the ice for 10 goals against, Petry has been on the ice for 2 goals against and Pettersson has been on the ice for 1 goal against on the PK. I don't see why you can't just kick Dumoulin out and put Letang back on the PK. It's not ideal because I want to try to limit Letang's ice time, but Letang has historically been a great PKing defenseman.

I don't see why you couldn't run with say:

Pettersson-Letang
POJ-Petry
Smith-Rutta

PP1: Letang on defense
PP2: Smith and Petry on defense, POJ as the extra

PK1: Rutta and Letang on defense (Rutta allegedly has experience on LD, so what's the issue there?)
PK2: Pettersson and Petry on defense, POJ as the extra

And he has worked great with Pettersson and POJ which was a big thing Marino failed at despite the stats saying him and Petts were great.

Smith on PP1 would be cool.

POJ has been a pleasant surprise. I knew he had what it took to be an NHLer skill wise, but he sure had a horrid preseason. Glad he straightened things out.
It just goes to show you that young guys can play if you give them a legitimate shot. If it was up to Sully or HFboards, POJ would have been waived this season.

Sully did give him a shot though. Thats not fair to say. He put POJ in over Spearman, Ruh and Smith.

Smith anywhere in the lineup would be cool at this point.

POJ got 20 games before this season while idiots like Simon and Jank got more than double those games.
We arent talking about previous seasons, we are talking about now. The defense was completely revamped this season. Math and Marino were taken out, Petry brought in. That left a spot up for grabs.

Got more than just Habs fans having that take around here for some reason

What about Rutta?

Dumo third pairing D was needed. Rutta is a solid RD for the 14 minutes and Dumo just can't be that D man anymore. Not sure he can be moved without a higher pick but if he plays limited minutes and limited exposure, not the worst situation. Kap needs to go down if not claimed and get him out of the way and he now has to either work to be a better more consistent winger. I think he just played with first round talent and never developed to be what he is. A third line winger who needs to be a all around winger not just some speed shot fancy dan live with the good and the bad player. I move him if I can and move on. Maybe Jimmy R stiull thinks his has it. But I think a 3 way trade is needed as the Canucks don't have what the Pens need.

It’s super early of course, but I honestly don’t see a top-6 spot for someone like Marchment. Zucker looks completely revitalized after he became healthy and I don’t think you need another top-6 guy if Zucker gets back to where he once was.

I don’t think this team needs any forwards. They seem to be overflowing with quality NHL guys and need to move out guys before taking about adding guys.

To expand on that, I think you can legitimately argue this team really doesn’t need anything right now. There doesn’t seem to be any glaring flaws with the current team, the worst case scenario with a lot of these positions are something like “you want better but they’re not killing you”. Look at POJ on the 3rd pair, I’ve been super critical of him but he’s realistically not going to sink this team if he’s playing. The most questionable spots are things like Zucker on L2, Archibald on L4 and POJ on the 3rd pair. It’s not some disastrous situation.
I think the team could use a better forward on the third line than Heinen-Carter-McGinn. I don’t know which one you bump down to the 4th line but it would be nice. A PP threat not named Rust would also be wonderful.

Addison turning into a nice PP specialist for Minny. Zucker going beast mode this season helps take some of the sting but with most JR deals I think he gave too much.

Starting to get concerned with paying Rust 5 million a year for this kind of production. Dude straight up took that contract and ran.

Rust has been bad, but the wheels are still there. His decision making has been awful, but that is fixable considering he probably didn't forget how to play hockey, he just seems to have forgotten what earned him that fat contract.

Rakell's contract has potential to be an absolute steal. Now, if only Sully would realize he could play him on PP1 and in the last minutes to protect lead rather than keep using Bryan "-10 but looking more like -100" Rust... Maybe he is confused and thinks Rakell is due for a new contract soon and is trying to keep his numbers down. :)
Poehling is always turning into a steal of throw-in. Rutta is solid, Archibald is more than living up to his contract so far. Petry is turning things around. The Marino trade is still bad but most of Hextall's moves are paying off. Too bad Letand and Rust decided to mail it in but that was not exactly easy to predict and Rust is still tradable.

Rust has stunk but he's an incredibly streaky player.

At some point this season he's going to rattle off like 10 goals in 15 games or something and look like a million bucks. And then he'll go cold again.
