Jesus, I just went through the game logs from last year to refresh my mind….. Kap has literally 5 goals since December 2021, including playoffs AND this year.

I can’t imagine guys like Puustinen, Poulin, or Hallander couldn’t have similar production if given the same opportunity.
Just brutal.
YOU could probably score 5 in a year of Pens forward usage, sir

Now if that didnt blow your mind enough, go read the Kap re-signed thread from this summer and read how half this board defended the signing.

Kap was going to be coached better!!!
I really think Sulli has to go. But... this team is headed for inevitable decline. So.... until the Penguins decide to sell everything for picks to get some new 18 year old kid star to center a build around...... nothing matters.

Gotta give the man his credit. He hasn't ever skipped a leg day. Could you imagine if Geno worked out like Sid and had tree trunk legs on his frame?

Lawd he'd have been even more of a tank.
If he worked out like Sid, he would have turned into Jagr.

Hextall nickel and dimed Malkin just to re-sign Kapanen for 2x3.2 million.
I was actually fine with the nickel and diming/dining Malkin. I was sour on Hexy, but I give him credit for the Letang/Malkin signings.

Kap? Total fail! $3.2M and not to mention a frigging 2 year deal!

The whole Kap thing is still so bewildering, man. Like, why in the world even bother keeping him around? He was JR's guy, and he sucked absolute shit last season and you had a free out with him being an RFA. Either trade his rights for some whatever pick or prospect or let him walk. Two years?! C'maaaaaaaaaahn.

Just waive Kap…even if no one picks him up we’ll get a modicum of cap relief which is better than keeping him on the roster lol

They need to get forward thinking and plan what they can do with the Kap relief come trade deadline.

Too bad Smith isn't a F as that would make this easy!

Vancouver with Jimmy R may still think Kap is the kind of speed RW guy that fits what he wants. The problem is unless the Pens get back a nice prospect, and a smaller contract, no reason to move him. But in the off season, Pens may be in a different mode.

Move him just to get his contract off the books without paying a draft pick to do so…if you can…that’s a win…we’re not getting anything decent back…bank some cap space for the TDL in case there’s a miracle and this team actual performs better than we expect them to…lol

I would agree but I really think unless the Pens right the ship like starting tonight, the TDL Hextall will be more likely selling as Pens just are not in the mix this year. Sometimes even with doing good things it just doesn't jell. We will see by the end of November if the Pens are looking better and still in the hunt. But as I posted if they lose 5 or 6 games out of the remaining 8 for the month, that just may be too deep a hole to climb out of. Now we are in a different environment that the Pens have been in in 15 years.

Even if they’re not a player, and I don’t expect them to be, there’s still incredible benefits to getting Kapanen’s cap space off the roster…imagine having the ability to weaponize cap space by taking on other players or portions of their cap space for good draft picks and prospects like other teams have done…definite boost to the rebuild…

I don't think it'd be the worst thing in the world to have to retool either. I still think this team as constructed is capable of making the playoffs, but if for whatever reason they take a shit on the ice this year maybe we can grab a high pick, trade some deadweight (Dumo/Kapanen) and then have another go at it next year with an improved roster.

And believe me no matter how badly Dumo plays there will 100% be teams lining up to trade for him at the TDL if we're out of it. Look at the scrub dmen that get traded every year. Teams always want depth

Genuine question; How do you retool when your roster is pretty much set for a couple of years? You have Zucker, Heinen, Blueger, Dumo coming off the books--potentially, I'm still not convinced Zucker or Dumo are let go. So you've got an opening on Geno's wing, some bottom-6 trash to replace, and a LD of some degree depending on how things shake out with Petts, POJ and Smith in the next calendar year.

I don't think this team has any attractive pieces to sell off unless they're moving Jake, which, just pack it up if that's the case.

I think the whole retool on the fly while being a team from Pittsburgh is, uh... Optimistic. I'll say that cuz what I actually think about it is probably a mod warning waiting to happen. We're gonna cruise out the era with this ever worsening, declining team and just start from scratch when the canoe goes over the waterfall and gets decimated on the rocks below.

If the Pens don’t right the ship, Hextall won’t be here at the deadline, thankfully.

Now if that didnt blow your mind enough, go read the Kap re-signed thread from this summer and read how half this board defended the signing.

My favorite kool aid theory thrown around to defend this boneheaded decision was that Hextall had a trade line up, and the team acquiring him requested that we sign him for two years, not one.

Malkin never wanted to leave Pittsburgh, so biz-wise a game of chicken was fair play. It's still embarrassing how it played out. You don't do that to a future HOF player whose jersey is going in the rafters.

Geno is a f***ing pro for not taking that personally in the end and agreeing to stay. He loves playing with Sid and Tanger and he loves playing in Pittsburgh. We are lucky to have him.

Kap has 3 goals in bud last 50 games. Can a reporter ask Hextall why he re-signed him to a $6.4 mil multi year deal?

Our bottom six is so vanilla. They don’t score, they don’t bring much energy, and they aren’t very physical. They add absolutely nothing.
This is by far the worst our bottom 6 has looked in at least 15 years. Not even close.

When Josh Archibald is your best player in the bottom 6 you know somebody f***ed up.

Kapanen's twirling 360 pass on that Morgan Geekie goal at 4:12 of this video still cracks me up. (Mike Sullivan responds by continuing to play him for 15 mins a night).
