Man, what a f***ing trade that was for us. One of the best from the past decade. Right after the Mike Johnston firing. Amazing time

I think the funniest part about it were all the Hawks fans telling us how f***ed we were and how great Scuderi was gonna be with a real team like them and then he sucked so bad they traded him to the Kings in only like 17 games played. With retention.

Pretty sure the Penguins went on to do something that year with Daley helping tremendously. But I just can't recall what...

...though I mean... to Chicago's credit they didn't make a trade, find out the player just isn't working on the team and then proceed to bury their head in the sand for years. They moved on.

My personal favorite was the one poster here who hated Scuderi so much, it was on the hairguy-Malkin level, who spent a year and a half complaining that Scuderi was here and couldn't be moved. Adn then when the trade happened, he was even more mad that it was for Daley and with retention! We didn't get rid of him the right way, you see.

lol that could have ALMOST been me. But I was so relieved to see that guy gone that I really didn't care much about the return.

Spot on.

The only way this situation resolves itself without the expenditure of major assets is to have one of Pettersson, POJ, Rutta, or Smith play at a replacement level that allows you to trade Dumo for their replacement. You don't trade Dumo to replace Dumo. You trade Dumo for Pettersson's replacement...who replaced Dumo.

We aren't far enough into the season yet to assess this. I'd advocate for Soucy or someone similar. Likely in a Dumo for assets, assets for Soucy type three way.

To HSL's point though, Sullivan needs to do a better job at managing minutes. You can't run Dumo-Letang 25 min a game. If you really, REALLY have to shelter the bottom pairing THAT much, then we have the wrong bottom pairing. f*** it, waive POJ and bring Smith in. Make a trade for a better bottom pairing guy. Switch the pairing up.

Pettersson-Letang
Rutta-Petry
Dumoulin-Smith/POJ

This is where Sullivan needs to be the bigger man and say "Hey guys, something isn't working. Let's discuss it" rather than "if we just keep doing the same thing, eventually it will work itself out". That's a Dan f***ing Bylsma approach and all it does is ruin seasons.

You wonder if this team wouldn't benefit from doing 7 D to spread out/reduce Dumo's minutes. Would also allow you to experiment who could be a long term Letang partner

I defended the Scuderi contract so much because he was so damn good with LA.

And looking at Gudbranson and Zadorov you just gotta think Sutter knows how to make slow skating defensemen effective.
Styles make fights as they say.

And on a related note, I wish this team would seriously think about what kind of system this team can realistically play with the aging stars it has and what we have in the system.

Mehhhhhh... that sounds like work. There might be a lot of self-auditing and even some instruction going on there. Perhaps even some hard conversations. Best to just keep on pretending it's still like 2017.

We do evaluate the system every year and we may change things as the year goes on. What we want to do is put the players in the best position to succeed. But we will evaluate it down the road.

I was okay with the Scuderi signing but I think in hindsight we should've noticed a few red flags: Age, a lack of skillset to begin with, an insulated LA Kings team where he played with a guy that did all the work for him with the puck.

Yeah prime Doughty was REALLY good and exceled on both sides of the puck.

Good thing we didn't swing for the fences with Palat. Dude's got Jagr-groin; had surgery to repair it, they won't even give a timeline as to when he'll be next available.
