Marino is exactly what he was for us with the Devils. Just heavy overrating of metrics by the fan base to make him seem like some stud.
Wouldn't surprise me. He was fine for us, but wasn't particularly a standout. Just a decent defensive top 4 dman.
I was never as down on Marino as most, but I agree a lot with what you say. No point in dwelling on the past.

Another reason they could be hyped over him is that they've been pretty bad for awhile. Even an average d-man can get the hopes high at that point. Remember what a breath of fresh air Mark Eaton was in 2006?
I liked him just fine, but yeah, no point in dwelling on it. We needed a change. Whether it ends up being the right change remains to be seen.

Good for Marino. I still think he's living off the legend of his rookie season in this boards' eyes, and isn't anything better than the RD version of Petts--a pretty unremarkable player that tends to get beat badly when he gets beat.

Though Petts has been largely good, and the Petts-Petry pairing has been easily our best. Still only a handful of games in though.

The goals of the Devils and the goals of the Penguins at this moment in time are vastly different.

We saw Marino here plenty in the playoffs... where this team's goals primarily are focused. And he wasn't making a difference. *shrug*
The Devils have pretty good offense on the right side too. They have Hamilton. They have Severson.

Having a mobile defensive d is exactly what they need and Marino does fill that role.

Imo we badly needed a PMD with some skill on rd for Malkin to play in front of and Petry fills that role here. That's the other thing about the trade is Devils fans think we made it just for Smith and in reality we made it more to make room for Petry. Smith was not Marino's replacement. Petry is.

Yeah. I mean... a TON of trades aren't made in a vacuum. It's a capped league and shit is tight right now especially. Nuance is easy to ignore, though. Especially in the face of such a massive victory over a divisional rival that has been super relevant to us for many years, now. You can tell they clowned us hard because of the charts.

I mean... have you SEEN the charts? His bar is SEVERAL shades of blue and went nearly ALL the way to the right! TWICE! This is surely unprecedented!

Those same charts that are often used here to defend Pens players…

Smith would absolutely be in the lineup lmao.
I bet most wouldn’t have guessed Ruh would be in the lineup for POJ right now…

Sullivan is a clown. You can’t just assume he’d play Smith even if he could. Smith is a 22 year old dman coming off a horrendous season last year in NJ. On what planet does this sound like a player Mike Sullivan would play regularly? Because he played in training camp?

Camp means nothing to Sully; at least not if you are under 28 years old.

POJ played evey game except one on a back to back, resting a guy on back to back is smart. Ty Smith is better than POJ and has played a ton more of NHL games. He would absolutely be in the lineup, POJ got in the lineup for god's sake lol, a much better player would definitely be in the lineup.

So, you rest a 23 year old after game 6 of the regular season, but blindly stick with older guys every chance possible?

Interesting.

You act like Sully ices the best team possible, and doesn’t let his own stupidity and bias interfere with being a good coach.

If you were wondering what POJ would likely bring back in a trade:

I think Studnika is a pretty decent comparable to POJ. Myrenberg was a 5th round pick in 2021 and DiPietro is an okay G prospect. So basically not much.

At this point I feel like the Pens will just hang onto POJ and wait for an injury to call Smith up.

It's inevitable d injuries will pave the way for him at some point.

I wouldn't mind that. I think they're ultimately in a better spot going forward with both POJ and Smith in the fold.

It's just I question how long they'll wait to open up a spot for Smith if Sullivan is already scratching POJ for Ruhwedel. I've been very satisfied with POJ so far (outside of that very bad first game) and want to see more of him, but if Sullivan won't play him, why even bother keeping him?

Speaking of coaches, has anyone noticed that a good deal of teams (at least teams with good players) who fired their old coach are doing much better under the new coaches so far…specifically Boston, Flyers, Vegas…no idea why the Pens had to extend Sullivan for a gizillion more years…now we can’t even fire him mid-season and profit…

I hate the fact Sullivan's already going that route. Look, he does a lot of good stuff, but one of Sullivan's biggest issues for me is how quickly he'll pull the plug on a youngster. Ruhwedel shouldn't be playing unless there's injuries on defense.
