It gets pretty irritating how he falls with certain AHL players who have low ceilings and nothing dynamic about their games. Like, Ruhwedel is 32. There isn’t any upside there. We know that. At this point, he should probably be in WBS mentoring the youngsters...not blocking someone who is playing well and maybe deserves a cup of coffee.

I hate the fact Sullivan's already going that route. Look, he does a lot of good stuff, but one of Sullivan's biggest issues for me is how quickly he'll pull the plug on a youngster. Ruhwedel shouldn't be playing unless there's injuries on defense.

Lotta mopes in the world like rooting for fellow mopes against all else. :dunno:

Edit: lol this site's coding is so f***ing janky. Maybe if they stopped running the mining software in the background it wouldn't take 4 times for the edit button to work without logging me out.

I feel like in previous years Sullivan has talked about wanting to get everybody in a game early in the year. A back-to-back is as good of a time as any, so I'm not going to read too much into Ruhwedel getting a game....and I say that as one of the Sully 'haters'.

If Ruhwedel is in again tonight, though....

Sullivan apparently said the decision to play Ruhwedel wasn't a reflection of POJ's performance, whatever that means.

I wonder if they galaxy brained it and thought Ruhwedel would do better against a more physical team like the Flames.

This is from a few pages ago, but DOC's "slow" start of producing in the AHL while looking quite good reminded me of the GF% vs xGF% debate. At some point you've gotta start producing -- which he has now. I forget what @Jesse said about why it's best to use the xGF% but I think it should be a mix of the two.

Using a 625/375 split of GF/xGF %'s, here's the NHL Pens rankings (minimum 6 games played):

RankPlayer%RB
1Jan Rutta77.39
2Rickard Rakell74.83
3Pierre-Olivier Joseph73.61
4Sidney Crosby68.60
5Jason Zucker66.79
6Josh Archibald63.42
7Evgeni Malkin62.63
8Danton Heinen62.10
9Marcus Pettersson60.95
10Bryan Rust60.74
11Ryan Poehling59.32
12Jeff Petry56.02
13Brian Dumoulin53.84

Not to pile on my pet peeve, Dumo, but here’s someone else, Gretz, on the poor week the top D pair had and moving Dumo down the lineup..

“The Kris Letang-Brian Dumouin pairing. These guys had a really rough week, with Dumoulin in particular struggling. In the three games this week they were down around a 40 percent share in shot attempts, scoring chances, high-danger scoring chances, and expected goals, while also being outscored by a 1-4 margin when they were on the ice during 5-on-5 play. Dumoulin is the big concern for me here because he started to show signs of slowing down a year ago and this is not the sort of start I was hoping for from him in terms of bouncing back. Not going to panic yet with these two because they have been so good and so productive for so long, but you do have to start to wonder about Dumoulin’s ability to still play those minutes.”

Gretz usually has pretty good takes.

We went from reading takes about how Hextall needed to buy Zucker out this summer to reading takes lamenting Hextall's refusal to take those readily available picks/prospects for the highly in-demand Zucker this summer. Good grief.

Speaking of coaches, has anyone noticed that a good deal of teams (at least teams with good players) who fired their old coach are doing much better under the new coaches so far…specifically Boston, Flyers, Vegas…no idea why the Pens had to extend Sullivan for a gizillion more years…now we can’t even fire him mid-season and profit…
i would be very happy just to move him down to wbs. it would give him a chance to get to know the younger players and let him experiment a little without the pressure to win. and then we could bring him back as soon as we realize he's not as bad as we think.

My only guess is that they wanted some fresh legs in against Calgary maybe? But that’s still pretty dumb to just rotate one depth D for another with that in mind.

Why are people so quick to want to get rid of POJ? He is a 23 year old former first round pick who has 3 points and a +5 in 6 games. He is getting better every game and isn’t going to return anything of value in a trade.

I’m not even saying he’s that good, but pretty sure it is too early to tell. He had good numbers in WBS last year too.

I don't know why we're talking *any* trades tbh.

If Hextall moves Dumo, that's Petts or POJ getting top pairing minutes/responsibility and I don't think that's a great idea. POJ has no value as an asset. Petts-Petry is a strong middle pairing. You're probably gonna have to pay someone to take McGinn's contract.

A team with this cap situation, in which the GM has said he wants to hang on to futures, is probably gonna be really f***ing boring when it comes to trades and FA for the rest of the era.

I think we'll just keep trading second round picks and marginal prospects for deadline help and that will be that.

Hextall won't move the first unless we look amazing
