It even goes back to a lot of the commentators they hire. A lot of them were either journeymen who had to play a grinding game to stick around or were players who played with a physical edge (ie. Bieksa, Bissonette, Tocchet, Roenick, etc.). These guys applaud the stuff Trouba does.
Maybe have more players like Paul Kariya or any number of skilled guys who probably would champion getting rid of the dirty stuff and the intermission shows might focus more on the skill and ability rather than the headhunters.
Oh absolutely. It's sad that it has to be the case and people can't just think for themselves but the commentary AROUND the game (which again is already populated and run by a bunch of regressive dinosaurs) contributes heavily to how people feel about things. Like... when I was young and stupid I used to think Ulf was super cool for kneecapping motherf***ers and ruining careers. And why wouldn't I? People howled in delight for it... fans, coaches, talking heads, etc.
The league hasn't moved far beyond that point. And in fact actively represses things like the effects of concussions on players. Not to mention how they choose to run their department of player "safety." But the potential viewing audience they SAY they want to tap into... you know... the money... they HAVE moved on. Nobody wants to see the luminaries of the league taken down to some knuckle-dragger's level with a chop to the back of the neck. But for whatever reason it's enabled.
Like I made the point earlier about Melrose, Messier etc. Why are these guys trotted out in front of the viewing audience as ambassadors of the sport? They're Neanderthals.
But I mean... I know I'm kinda preaching to the choir, here.
