Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I wonder if Keith retiring opens up Edmonton as a potential landing spot for Pettersson. I think they probably just end up signing Kulak instead, but it's an interesting thought.

I’m disappointed that we didn’t unload some guys. The kool aid gang can all defend sleepy, but I’m sorry, it isn’t hard to move Dumo or Pettersson (with a sweetener, if necessary).

Maybe sleepy is too busy dealing with Malkin’s agent.

As I reported, Cam Talbot said after the season he doesn't want to be traded. But there clearly were hurt feelings and this thing is coming to a head. Guerin met with Bazos and isn't pleased. Guerin also can't call Talbot because of phone outage in MTL @USSFJB your hero Guerin has pissed off his number 1B Goalie

The Penguins spend their fourth-round pick (118 overall) on Russian goalie Sergey Murashov.

He's not my hero, but I would love to have billyg over sleepy comb-over

Just to be a spoilsport, if moving Pettersson/Zucker for no cap is on, it would likely be happening right now.

With Malkin at $6 million, which sounds pretty close to what he'll probably come in at, the Penguins would be sitting with $9.3 million in cap space with 10 F, 7 D and 2 goalies. That's without trading anyone. Even if you keep Pettersson, you probably still have the money to keep Rakell and one of Kapanen or Heinen. The "do nothing" off-season from Hextall can still result in the Penguins going into next year with:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Malkin-Rakell
Zohorna-Carter-Kapanen/Heinen
O'Connor-Blueger-McGinn
2 league minimum extra forwards

Dumoulin-Letang
Matheson-Marino
Pettersson-Ruhwedel
Friedman

Jarry-DeSmith

If you just trade Pettersson and replace him with POJ, that gives you the cap space to keep all 3 of Heinen, Kapanen and Rakell. I think the "reasonable" hope for this off-season is moving Pettersson out without taking money back and going into next year with:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Malkin-Rakell
Heinen-Carter-Kapanen
O'Connor-Blueger-McGinn
Zohorna-league minimum extra F

Dumoulin-Letang
Matheson-Marino
POJ-Ruhwedel
Friedman

Jarry-DeSmith

I think the "dream" hope for this off-season is moving both Pettersson and Zucker out without taking money back and then throwing a nice contract at Trocheck. That lineup would be the same as above, but with Rakell-Malkin-Trocheck as the 2nd line instead of Zucker-Malkin-Rakell.

Just to be a spoilsport, if moving Pettersson/Zucker for no cap is on, it would likely be happening right now.

May be easier to move Zucker or Pettersson once teams strike out on UFAs than right now though.

Didn't know what had changed.

Probably would have went Rakell over Rust
Let Letang walk, signed Manson, paired with Matheson as number one pair
Signed Nichuskin

Would have tested the cost between Malkin vs Kadri.
Kicked tires on Domi'
Tried to get rid of Doumo and Pettersonn, by any means possible
Kicked tires on Zadorov and Namestkikov

What are we signing these hypotheticals to?

True @Empoleon8771 but once you get to that point of free agency, what's our motivation for moving them? Not like we can go spend with the savings.

If you have Heinen and Kapanen's RFA rights and need to move out Pettersson to afford both of them, that seems like a pretty clear motivation.

That's my realistic hope for this off-season, just move out Pettersson and keep the middle-6 wingers (Zucker, Rakell, Heinen and Kapanen). You have a lot of flexibility with how you can set up the 2nd and 3rd line wingers with those 4.

With trading Pettersson and signing Malkin ($6 million AAV), Rakell ($4.5 million AAV), Kapanen ($3 million AAV), Heinen ($2.5 million AAV) and POJ ($800k), you're at $2.53 million in cap space with only needing 1 extra forward.

I'm going to be optimistic.

I think Malkin is signed by Monday. A Pettersson and/or Marino trade is done by Tuesday. And the Pens make a couple interesting signings when free agency opens Wednesday.

I feel like the info about how they feel about Dumo/Zucker/Marino/Petts is more than I've seen before.

Well then spill the beans, I don't pay for the Athletic

I was able to get down as far as "they don't want to trade Dumoulin because they like how he fits with Letang, but they'd entertain an offer".

Pettersson is most likely to go. They'd consider Dumo but the offer would have to be big. Zucker is unlikely to be dealt. Marino could be traded now that Letang is locked up, but isn't their ideal choice.

Also says the cap space will be to be active in FA and sign Malkin. They are interested in bringing Rakell back.

I will say that if that list of potential trade candidates is accurate than at least their brains are in the right place. Although I'm still hesitant about them moving on from Marino. But depending on the replacement plan also completely fine with it since I just don't think he's quite the player a lot of people seem to plus maybe the whole situation with his over-involved dad is wearing a bit thin with the franchise. Though that last part is largely speculation from what I gather.

Regardless of Malkin's situation I think it's pretty important to try to move at least one dumpy contract.

I feel like this is all kinda information we could have inferred but it's interesting to see nonetheless.

I'm curious about the "be active in FA" angle, though. If they're not trading Zucker and they want to bring back Rakell and Malkin, there isn't really many spots on the roster to "be active in FA" with.
