Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Good call. To establish trust my first tweet needs to go viral. I either need to prove I have legit sources or say something really dumb. I feel like Nathan Fielder rn

Hextall catches a lot of flak that should be directed at ownership, past and present, imo. I'm not a huge fan of Hextall, but he hasn't f***ed up and hemorrhaged assets. I'll take that over a GM spending years acting like Yosemite Sam and throwing assets all around for guys like Bjugstad, McCann, Tanev, Zucker, Kapanen and overpaying Petts and Marino.

If this team really, really wanted to gun for another Cup, Hextall either would've been fired and replaced or he would've been directly told to change approach and shakeup the roster to add significant players.
SO if this team is NOT trying to win a Cup, then what ARE they doing? We are not building. We are not going for it. People are buying tickets and merch. We are all watching.

Why?

Those are not results. That is conjecture. You make a fine lawyer.

Yeah it is conjecture, but I don't think it's exactly an unfair claim to make.

Even taking out how the Penguins would have done last year with competent goaltending, I think they clearly looked better in the last 2 years with Hextall than they looked in the last 2 years with JR. I think a large part of that is showing some patience with the roster and actually allowing these players to grow some chemistry with each other. I think the team is better now, and you can easily make it a team that has at least a chance of going deep.

I think this team can go on a deep run if they get a hot run from Jarry with this kind of lineup:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Rakell-Malkin-Trocheck
Heinen-Carter-Kapanen
O'Connor-Blueger-McGinn

Dumoulin-Letang
Matheson-Marino
POJ-Ruhwedel

Jarry-DeSmith

This lineup can go deep with good goaltending.

Your lineup has six unsigned forwards.

And no, it cannot go far in the playoffs.

You want to try to win a Stanley Cup without Malkin? Who are you going to get? Gaudreau? Forsberg? Trocheck? A trade for Miller?

We are not better off without Malkin barring something completely unforeseen, like a McDavid deal or some such.

We have taken Malkin for granted for so long it is not funny.

We think he has slipped, but that is from his status as one of the best players in the game. He is still easily one of the 3 best No. 2 centers in the NHL...and both Draisaitl and Stamkos play a lot of wing.
For a little more than Geno's current cap hit you could bring in (for example)Trocheck and Burakovsky or Copp. So, you get two really good players that are younger and in the process add depth to the line up.

Letting the era play itself out while doing as little rocking the boat as possible. /shrug

I'd rather they blow it up and rebuild or go all out, but I'm just a dipshit on a message board.

I have a feeling Sid won't stick around Pittsburgh once He retires... Probably wants to own His Canadian team.. Calling it now..

My guess early on in the off-season was that it's basically just a farewell tour because there's no evidence of the team taking anything else seriously. :dunno:

I'd love to be wrong about it, but there just hasn't been any sign of changes coming for months now.

For years, tbh.

I'm just curious, for the people who think my lineup from above would have no chance of going deep, what would be your lineup that you think would be the caliber of roster that can "go deep"? What do you think a team needs to be built like to go on a deep run and possibly win a cup?

I'm asking this because I honestly get the vibe that this place has a lot of unrealistic expectations for roles, so I just want to see what you'd consider a cup worthy lineup.

That's and excellent top 6 and I agree

Do you 'member Sebastien Caron? I 'member.
That was my fake ID name circa 2003-4. The good ol' days.

Idk their roster when JR left was:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Malkin-Kapanen
McCann-Jankowski-ERod/Sceviour
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

Dumoulin-Letang
Pettersson-Marino
Matheson-Ceci

Jarry-DeSmith

Their healthy roster in the playoffs this year was:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Malkin-Rakell
Heinen-Carter-Kapanen
McGinn-Blueger-Rodrigues

Dumoulin-Letang
Matheson-Marino
Pettersson-Ruhwedel

Jarry-DeSmith

To me, their roster has clearly improved since what it was when JR left.
Hextall really lucked into ERod taking the next step and Heinen coming cheap. That said, McGinn and Tanev are a wash and McCann and Heinen are a wash so the forwards are pretty close. I would take Matheson-Ceci over Petts-Ruddy. Ceci was a slam dunk signing by JR even though it crumbled at the end. I would still take the Hextall roster overall but it's close. I don't think Hextall gets major credit for vastly improving the team but rather he's get credit for maintaining it well in light of the ED. I'll give him that.

To be fair, the swap is more so Ceci vs Ruhwedel because the other 5 guys are the same. I'd also point out that Matheson took a huge stride forward from where he was in 2020-2021, so I think that's worth mentioning too. I just had Matheson and Marino as a pair instead of bumping Pettersson to the 2nd pair.

There's also upgrading from Carter to Jankowski, which was a pretty massive step upwards.

Could one really take a step backwards from Jankowski?

Yeah I think that's kinda my point

JR went dumpster diving regularly because of his stupid as hell trades that went horribly, so the Penguins needed to hit on those long-shot guys because they didn't have the cap space or assets to address it otherwise. Jankowski was a prime example of that.

Honestly, the Hornqvist / Matheson trade is looking pretty good in retrospect. I still wish we got a pick instead of Sceviour though.
