Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I suppose in the grand scheme bringing CDS back for under 2 mil is probably as "okay then sure why not" as it gets. Not sure what he did to warrant a raise other than get older but the UFA keeper market is probably going to be looney tunes this offseason.

The market for goalies like him is about $2 million a year. Look at what guys like Holtby and Francouz get in free agency.

Because he's given above average results in every season in his career and has shown to be capable of handling 1B usage.

The only reason I'm iffy on DeSmith is because he's been unavailable in the playoffs in each of the last 2 years. But this deal is pretty much a standard "reliable backup who can play regularly" contract.
Above average? No, I look at him and I see Hedberg 2.0. :dunno:

Yeah, maybe. I just think it's weird that people are so invested in a guy that had exactly one good streak in his career just because he's not MAF and MAF-stans annoy them. :dunno:

I mean, MAF-stans DO annoy me. But for me it's more about having a solid-if-unspectacular goalie tandem for a combined 5.3 mil AAV given the general streakiness and unpredictability of the position.

I think it's borderline impossible for the Pens to trade into the top 5 at this draft. The prospect pool is not deep enough. Someone like Guentzel would have to be going the other way...and at that point, you are rebuilding.

But again, that was pretty much only one season for CDS. He was shaky as shit last year and the year before.

Hilariously, if you go by pure (again bad) statistics, Louie Domingue has the 2nd highest save percentage in the NHL, and 7th in GAA. Granted he only played 2 games, and I can't seem to remember how to weight natural stat trick for GP without doing it myself.

In terms of SV%, Jarry was 15, DeSmith was 27th. For GAA, Jarry is 14th, Desmith is 41st. I just don't see that as being above average, Emp, but I think we'll both agree that goalie stats are inherently pretty flawed.

If there is a year in which moving in the top 5 should be rather affordable, it is this year.

The top of the draft is meh and the group of players from like 5 to 20 is rather similar.

I don't really have any opinion one way or another regarding the new CDS deal aside from the feeling that it signals the team's entirely happy to keep everything as it's been for years despite repeated failure.

If you're not even gonna bother to look for a different backup, you surely aren't gonna go through the trouble of removing bloated contracts or trying to make a play for a substantial addition offensively.

You're right, but I still don't see a way the Penguins have the assets to jump that high in the draft.

Jumping from the Penguins 1st to a top-5 pick will definitely cost their 2023 1st, and I'd be willing to bet you'd have to add even more.

Woof - Can't believe we have Casey DeSuck back. He shouldn't have been back at any price. Here's to another 2 years of regret.

I genuinely do not know what team some of you guys are watching

The vitriol towards DeSmith makes no sense to me. Dude is a spazz when he plays in net, but he's been incredibly consistent in his results in his NHL career.

If DeSmith and his career .915 save% sucks, what exactly are you expecting out of a backup goalie? Even from a W/L perspective, he's 43-28-11 over his career, which is 97 points over an 82 game season.

Desmith likely wins us the Ranger’s series if he plays like he did in Game 1.

Who are the better/cheaper options we’re crying over not getting?

Oh, I agree.

All I am saying is that it is "doable" this year. A lot of teams are rumoured to have picks available. Seems to be a buyer market. As nice as it would be to draft a local kid that was able to play hockey because of a program Sid helped put in place (us marketers love shit like that), I doubt the cost of acquisition is justifiable.

CDS is no great shakes and I get that a lot of people wanted to see another level of quality at the backup/platoon position. Hell I don't even much like the guy. But a couple things to consider:

1. Goaltenders are a shitshow nightmare. Don't spend money on them. Danger... danger.

2. The Penguins have some interesting options already in-system, now. Probably smart to just sign a bridge kind of guy on the cheap like CDS until those options are closer to ready as opposed to wrapping up millions more and potentially causing a roadblock.

One? He should ship out every damn Dman outside of Matheson and Marino. Is it too early to trade Rust?
I’ll take a minimum of one because I’ve yet to see him do anything along these lines to gain either cap space or try to improve the team….lol

I'm the opposite. I can't for the life of me see anything worth getting excited about with DeSmith. Positionally, he's a mess. He's not particularly athletic nor is he great with a stick. He's competant, sometimes?

Again, he reminds me very much of Hedberg, whose popularity continues to be a gigantic mystery with me.

I suppose I just kind of don't get the fanfare like this is some sort of masterstroke. It's... fine? I guess? :dunno:

My problem is not with CDS himself (well, he is not great, but what back up is...). My main problem is that the main reason for our last two playoff losses is goaltending - either availability (CDS, both times; Jarry against the Rangers) or performance (Jarry against the Islanders, Domingue against the Rangers). Yet, we are going with the exact same two guys.
