I was just shocked that Cook and Joe have a show. Time for a story. Cook, Joe, and myself all grew up in the same small town. I was very smart and handsome but a little shy. Seravelli reported on his show that the Pens have offered Malkin a four year deal around the same AAV as Letang.

That's not exactly what he said. Full quote:

"It seems like there has been some progress and some common ground that's been found in the last 24 hours. I'm told that for the first time the Pittsburgh Penguins put a four-year deal on the table. I think, in an ideal world, the Penguins would be hoping to get Malkin on a four-year deal at the same AAV as Kris Letang, who came in at 6.1 on a six-year deal. I think the Malkin camp really needed to get to that four-year deal in order to make the total dollars more palatable. I also think there's a deal to be made in general, even if the AAV is a bit higher than that."

In other words, it's a four-year deal but he didn't say outright that it's at the same amount as Letang.

Paul Steigerwald has never been wrong about anything!

Except for all those times he was wrong about simple play by play, or players' names, or what the score was, or who was on the ice.

I still kinda miss him though. Him and Errey were such a dynamic duo. Mears doesn't hit the same.

Also, thought I'd throw this in the post. I grew up with a guy who was neighbors with Steigerwald. Said he smoked a fat joint with Steiggy on his own porch during a block party.

I saw Ron Cook at a grocery store in Squirrel Hill yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I guess I should have clarified that if the rest ended up being true that Rossi said. If they were willing to come up they shouldn't have made him sit on a 2 year deal up until last week. We don't know the numbers outside of what Rossi said but he was pretty accurate with Letang. If he is close to accurate with Malkin too, it seems like they were jerking him around. You wonder if they even waited to have real negotiations until after Letang was signed.

BTW I dislike Rossi but he is the closet to Malkin.

- Hextall and Malkin agree on $6M but Hextall continues to want only three years while Malkin continues to want four. Yohe doesn’t give an indication one way or the other as to whether he thinks it gets done.

- Yohe makes it clear everyone in the organization wants him back but they’re concerned about the health aspect of it.

- Pens are probably going to qualify Heinen. Heinen wants 3M though and the Pens don’t want to do that but will look to compromise.

- 50/50 as to whether they qualify Kapanen.

- Hextall has some trade offers on the table to consider. They want to move salary to re-sign Rakell and they do want to re-sign him. Gotta move that salary before attempting to do so. It does look like Rakell hits open market.

- If they can’t re-sign Rakell, looking to sign a significant UFA to replace him. Doesn’t provide any names.

This gets done. Im going with the Pens cave and its 4 years at 6.1mil. Same cap hit as Letang

Not shocked there is mutual interest between the Pens and kadri, I just dont see how the salary works out though. Unless we are completely revamping our blueline, which I wouldnt be opposed to.

I saw a discussion on the main boards about “best franchise of the cap era” between pens hawks and bolts, the pens, I think, had 16 playoff appearances while the hawks and bolts were 11/10, I think. Anyhow, the point is, the penguins never had a refresh year, while those two teams had 5. Every GM we’ve had in this era has thrown futures for help in the present. Even a year where we lost both Sid and Geno we made the playoffs. No one f***ed up IMO. It’s not bad luck. We’ve just kicked the can down the road and now we’re at a dead end and there’s no more kicking to be done but our feet refuse to stop moving. If all 3 retired RIGHT NOW, you could trade guentzel and Marino and Jarry for good returns. You could sell cap space. You could rebuild this in 3-5 years, easily IMO. but they aren’t retiring so Hextall has to find some place to shove this can

Dont underestimate new ownership too. I think theyve made it clear they are not signing off on a retool/rebuild in the next few years. They didnt just spend millions on a new team to tank for awhile. Part of why I see Malkin back and the team being in the playoffs for another 2-4 years.
