Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I wonder what the asking price on Chychrun would be?
Arizona wanted a package deal of "4" first round talents whether it was top prospects or picks but the Debrincat trade screwed them over because Ottawa didnt give up too much. Bill Armstrong said at the draft he will be playing for Arizon this year

Oh I agree - it's silly. To me and the majority of people here (seems to include you as well), we understand the game. Both sides are holding their ground playing chicken while both sides want to agree to a deal. Geno doesn't want to go anywhere else. Pens want Geno for the fact he's a money maker for this team.

It would take something very silly to end this badly. I think both sides are mutual here just playing the typical game to squeeze out what they can.

And just for a side comment, this is why I'm against players taking cuts for team benefits. I'm okay if they take a cut to stay in the city they want for their family. I'm against them taking cuts to save team money. Because as soon as Geno is of no more worth to the Pens, they will send him somewhere else or not re-sign him. So i'm all for players going to market. I don't find it greedy in any way. It's the business. So many "fans" don't understand this is a business.

edit: If my company said "Hey man... we are going to drop your salary 25% to help the team" and I knew 5-10 other companies want to hire me immediately at 25% raise... i'd be so f***ing fast out that door. But I would stay with the company I love because i'm comfortable there if they treated me well and paid the fair price.
Thing is there was less vitriol to the Letang rumours of wanting 8.5 or more etc. Whereas Malkin openly said he wanted to take a discount and then we hear the reported term and see what they gave Letang and it doesn't jive. Blokes here can assume all they want about reactions being too much or too little or whatever.

6x4 for Malkin is a good deal. Reducing his and Letang's combined cap hit to 12 mil is a really good way to open up the team to improvement...if they spend wisely. IMO they need to sign Rakell and another really legit top 6 winger, or 2 if Rakell walks.

Chychrun is a beast and would look amazing in black and gold but no chance we have the pieces or lack of Ron Hextall stingyness to afford him.

My personal trade pipe dream is Patrick Laine. Good lord, imagine Guentzel-Crosby-Laine with Malkin and Letang on PP1.

Man... we need play drivers and not watchers. Laine would be like Kessel in a sense. Not a driver of the play. I think at this era of Sid/G/Letang... we need drivers.

I don't think the Kessel comparison is far off, but still think this roster could use a top-6 shoot-first guy (ala 2008 Marian Hossa) to get us back to Eastern Conference Finals contention.

I also have an affinity for big wingers, sue me.

The problem with Laine is he is the old school sniper type - the one that just wants to score goals and is disengaged otherwise. It's fine if players like that produce like monsters no matter what but Laine doesn't and that and other inconsistencies makes it harder to think of him as anything but a giant Michael Ryder without the consistent goal scoring.

He's all potential with marginal substance right now. A bloke like him should have a couple of 50 goal seasons.

His second best goal output was recently this season with an on pace of 38-39 goals. One could argue with a better C he could top 50 but if you want to call him an elite goal scorer, he has to get closer to 50 without that.

I assume Hextall is playing chicken with Geno up until tomorrow...then he'll sign him.

Probably offering 6Mx3 then offered the extra 4th year but at 5.5M...

It'll end around 6.1Mx4 once Hextall sees Geno not going less.

Cause hitting FA without him signed if it's over a meager amount is foolish

Hossa was one of the best 2 way players i've ever seen and he was in the middle of Sid's prime. Different world right now.

I actually agree about a bigger winger. Honestly a bigger winger that can stir the pot a little and drive momentum our way. Would be perfect.

Kinda why I loved what Horny brought even though he's aged as well. So like a Wilson, Kassian, Hornqvist type player but for a lot less

Feel like we’re in the late stages of the Letang deal where both sides have the basic framework down but both sides are now just working on the contract structure/trade protection part of the deal. Think this gets done either late tonight or tomorrow at some point.

I think we all know this coach is not a fan of those physical forwards at all.

Enough proof in that regard as well. As much as we'd like a beast on this team in the top 9 that can score, we'll be stuck with the Heinen's and Rodrigues' that can't push back worth shit.

The interesting part of Hornqvist is he's a fairly small guy in relation to the havoc he caused...more of a rabid mentality.

Like our larger prospects DOC and Z...they have the stature, some skating ability and some flash of skill. But if they could add an edge it'd go a long way

We are at the late stages regardless.

Being a shooter is probably the only thing Laine and Hossa have in common.

Laine is a great goal scorer, but he does literally nothing else. As Cole said, we need players that can alleviate pressure on Sid and Geno and can drive the play. Laine is not that. He would be quite the weapon on the PP though.

Also it's none of our business considering the type of players this team has and continues to employ.
No arguments there, but thems the rules. I didnt write them, I just enforce them. ;)

Josh Anderson from Montreal fits the bill but his contract is a little pricy.
