Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Apparently P.Kane said he wanted to be traded to the Hawks and his preferred team: NYR…god damn you, NY…sad face….

Um, if moving out 1 year of Zucker for a 2nd is the difference between losing out on 4-5 years of Rakell or Burakovsky or Copp, then you make that trade every damn time.

It's the equivalent of saying you wouldn't give up a 2nd for one of those guys at the deadline.

Who the f**k cares? Your priority is what that 2nd rounder is going to turn into 5 years from now (less than 50% that pick ever makes the NHL by the way) rather than putting together the best possible team on the ice for the next 3-4 years while we still have Crosby/Malkin/Letang? That's seriously what you're going to cry about? Give me a break and get in touch with reality. Lol.
I don't think it's that simple. There are no guarantees we'll get those guys as UFA's anyhow. But to just continually give up high draft picks is not a good strategy. And I don't subscribe to the notion that having an aging and past their prime nucleus is a recipe for success and a long playoff run regardless.

First of all... f*** FM radio.

Second of all - the Fan f***ing sucks.

Both of these are true.

I'm listening now, Poni is claiming the Penguins are willing to go up to $7 million a year for a 3 year deal on Malkin. He's allegedly not willing to budge on 3 years (Yohe also claimed this) but he bumped up the money he's willing to offer to $7 million.

The impression I'm getting from hearing all of this is that no one has a clue what's going on with Malkin. You have numerous people saying numerous things that don't line up. People are just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks IMO.

Poni broke the Heinz Field naming rights stuff today, but I don't know that he or anyone associated with the Fan has ever proven to have good hockey sources. I'm more inclined to believe Seravelli and a Letang-like AAV than going up $7 million over 3.

As ever, it's not about player today vs player in X years, it's about trade asset now vs trade asset at other points for other uses.

I don’t understand what you’re saying.

What is more important — getting a depth piece at the deadline for a 2nd rounder? What can you get for a 2nd rounder at the deadline straight up? Maybe a half decent bottom 6 F or 6th Dman.

Whereas this summer we could move out Zucker and his boat-anchor of a contract that would preclude 4-5 years of a top 6 F like Kadri/Burakovksy/Copp?

A second rounder goes MUCH further now than at the deadline when it’s a seller’s market and who knows what pieces are even available (if any??)

Very simple:

Don't you understand that ship has sailed? We are not "rebuilding" now. You or I nor anyone here owns the team. The ownership didn't want to blow things up and wanted to run it back with the core we have. So the rebuilding ship sailed the minute we re-signed Rust, and then re-signed Letang, and now imminently re-signing Malkin.

I would have been fine if we blew it up, and I'm fine if we're going with this core for the next 3-4 years while Sid is signed and playing at a high level.

What I am NOT fine with is some half-measure bullshit where we have Sid/Geno/Malkin/Rust/Guentzel/Letang but then surround them with bullshit like Heinen, ERod, Kapanen, McGinn and other bottom of the barrel scraps.

So once the strategy of sticking with the core of Rust/Geno/Letang has been committed to and those guys re-signed, the immediate priority MUST be to surround them with a better supporting cast than we've had for the last few years. That means re-signing Rakell. That means signing one other legit-top 6 forward. At the very least.

His bosses probably care though
Some people simply lack the foresight and the understanding that we have to ice a team beyond the next couple of years. They want it all and they want it now! They believe in fables and the inane notion that this team is still a legit cup contender. They probably chase after windmills as well. No joke!

So i'm not against Poulin... Rak... (i don't mind McGinn)... and bring up the guns that you want to party with for the next 3 years. Make this shit happen. Leave it all out there.

I'm very cognizant of the fact we're not rebuilding. That doesn't however mean we continue to pillage our draft picks. We're not winning anything anyhow. We're not a 1st or 2hd round draft pick (capital) away in acquiring the piece that puts us over the top. You can still ice a competitive team, but to not at least have an eye on the future and considering our cores age is a fools errand. We're pretenders NOT contenders. Indulge the fan base and STH's if you will, but ultimately we're not going anywhere.

I always get confused why people would want to go to a state or a city with insane taxes as a high wage earner.

But with him... it sorta makes sense because he's from the buffalo area and NYC would probably be like home, eh?

If I was in the business, i'd be looking at the non-state tax teams and try to save as much as I could. Not buy $400 socks like James Neal.

Honestly, the only prospects we have in our system that I really don't want to move are: DOC and Puustinen because we actually need a few guys to contribute on ELC's as soon as next year so we can load up on higher end/higher priced talent.

To a lesser extent, Zohorna and Hallander, because those guys are also candidates to contribute NOW.

I'm not sold on Poulin. I'm not giving up on him, but he's not playing in the NHL this year or possibly next. I'd move him in a package for JT Miller in a heartbeat. Ditto with POJ. Ditto with the 2023 1st, etc.

Ditto with every other prospect in our system other than we really should keep two out of Lindberg/Blomqvist/Gauthier and I'm a real believer in Pickering (I have been all year, long before we picked him).

Well, because NYC is a very glamorous city and have a LOT of stuff to do/buy when you are a rich young man.

If those guys were smart with their money, they would not be driving the cars they are
