Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

And yet we've lost FIVE successive playoff series, our core is all in their mid 30's and in the last four seasons we haven't even gotten out of the 1st round. But yeah we're a tweak or two away from being a legit contender.
2 of our 3 core players just had excellent seasons, Letang his best point season ever

What happened last year has no bearing on next year and so on.

Its no easy task to win the cup but we are pretty damn close to competing for it, to say no matter who we get doesn't matter is just foolish

Because for a lot of people maybe it's not about getting every last penny and more about where it's a good place to live?

Soooo not NYC. Got it.

What is so wrong about a place that BW3 closes at 10pm?

If you guys/gals had to play in Rochester NY all the time, you'd love pretty much any other city. Rochester NY has a mall and everyone goes to it even in 10 feet of snow.

Send Geno to Buffalo.

No other nation has produced a rate of 'rags to ritches' even close to America. If you chose to group people economically - even our poorest are truly wealthier than 80+% of the globe.

Now, healthcare we could talk about all day. Not that it's any shred better in Canada - it's just 'free'. Many people I know wait to have surgeries and other major procedures until they're here in the States.

Also tough to compare a nation as big as Canada that has the population of California to one as big and complex as the United States. Different cultures, different people, different priorities. Our GDP could easily provide for certain things it's where it's "spent" that could be debated. Zero reason to raise any taxes when the money is already there.

But the shortest answer to your question is that our nation was founded upon a distrust in government - and the last 100 years has done nothing to skew that opinion. Places in the United States with the highest taxes also tend to have the largest wealth gaps and highest poverty rates (California, New York, etc). Education here is based on growth - some of the best public, private, and collegiate level schools are in the southern US but with a polarized media and 'scores' based on things like growth or averages - the opinion that schools are better in the severely segregated north becomes common opinion (burroughs in the northeast are drastically more segregated than any town in Florida as an example - so schools here pull from all wealth classes and walks of life). So yeah - you could keep the same low (federal) taxes here and provide for some levels of healthcare if you spent better or directed taxes better.
To be perfectly honest, that is where I did not want to go because of the site rules... but I 100% agree with that.

Taxes could be cut in Quebec if the money was managed better. Well, it applies everywhere. I am very cynical about the political class despite being for a wellfare state.

I was born an American and now identify as Canadian. I spent an equal amount of time in both countries. The Canadian health system is so vastly superior I’d question the education system of the country who disagrees.

now, I want to be clear: doctors on an individual basis may not be better here. Hospitals individually may not be better. but the entire system is superior. I’ll give an example:

one of my kids has oddities. His GP wasn’t concerned, but wanted to get to the bottom of it. She sent him for all sorts of tests and to five different specialists. For something that wasn’t life threatening. She just wanted answers.

this cost me nothing. It didn’t require approval from anyone. The whole process took maybe 2 months.

Americans are treated like indentured servants when it comes to healthcare and so many of them think that’s just great.

What's wrong with NYC? It's a world-class city

Yeah, NYC (or LA) as a rich person must be pretty cool.

I would not want to be a celebrity though. But rich businessman in NYC? Sure.
Yea I have dreamed of being a pro athlete, and/or being loaded. Never of fame. Seems terrible. NHL and MLB guys have it a little different than NBA and NFL though.

NYC changes completely when you’re uber rich I think. On the flip side, I think of a place like Denver (which I love); I don’t know how much different it can really be for your average working professional vs rich guy. Obviously some comforts and upgrades but overall I’m not sure if it gets crazy exclusive.

NYC and LA are different beasts. Working professional out of college probably never crosses paths w/ a Patty Kane. But I think that’s part of why athletes and rich people flock to them.

Do you have any evidence to support this or do you just want to believe it? There is lots of evidence showing that it is substantially more difficult to change the socioeconomic status you were born into in the US vs. other developed countries.

The discussion is pretty civil and fun. I do not think anyone is getting into a pissing match.

But yeah, we can move on.

So, about that GEno guy?

Oh no, I didn't mean the discussion had to stop, I just don't think we need to be slinging shots at cities tbh. For pro athletes, it really doesn't make much of a difference because they're all rich. Every city/state has its own rich people area.

For normal people, every state has its pros and cons. For rich people, they're living the high life basically anywhere

You never hear pro athletes pick a team to go to because "the school districts in this city are great". It's always either money, location or fame.

I'm with you. People could certainly come to a conclusion but it's best we leave it to polarizing sides that accomplish nothing instead - and argue amongst ourselves about it, lol. But simple questions tend to never be asked - like - instead of the annual 'half cent tax' or raising taxes on 'rich' (which tends to be the shred of the middle class and up) - we can't just ask about the money already being generated and spent. The answer here in the states really has nothing to do with raising individual contribution taxes and more about how we tax and how we spend.

System - perhaps.

From my point of view - I have America's free version: the VA. It's dogshit. So much so that instead of taking free care as a vet - I often pay out of pocket for things because I can get better, more accurate, and more timely care elsewhere. That's if I don't just ignore whatever I have because of the hassle. Healthcare gets me going lol - whole thing pisses me off. Don't get me wrong taking it that I just lovvvvee paying for shit. But yeah...If I had the flu, and needed to go in - I could use an app today and get a doc privately - or wait 90 days to go to the VA...truth. So whenever I hear about anything whatsoever being turned over to a government system it gives me pause. While I was in, friends routinely chose to have their babies outside of the VA system because of horror stories. Just a matter of fact that when you fill a system full of 'government hires' and doctors who chose less money to go to a VA system - because you can't be sued for anything....you get what you pay for. But don't get me wrong I'm an empathetic dad who would gladly help cover the costs of major procedures for many if the answer made sense. Maybe if they took the Chick-Fil-A business operations manager and made that person(s) in charge of universal healthcare...maybe.

Eh my point is kinda the opposite of the bolded. In some cities it’s a different ballgame for rich people vs other cities, and thus it’s why they cluster in those places.

Back to hockey talk, I think it's a good idea to pay attention to the qualifying offers and who doesn't get qualified today to see what kind of options Hextall could go after to boost the bottom-6. With ERod and Heinen almost assuredly leaving, Hextall is going to need to find another low-cost UFA or two to replace them in the bottom-6.

Heinen was an example of a guy who didn't get a qualifying offer and the Penguins were able to sign for cheap. I think Hextall needs to get another one of those guys to be able to spend as much money as possible on the 2nd line.

@molon labe first, I’ve had relatives who’ve had to deal with the VA. I’m sorry. It’s a mess. I don’t agree with every action the American government makes or most of their wars, but damn, if we’re going to fight those wars, actually support and honour and take care of the troops you always trot out when your polling numbers are low. In short - you deserve better.

that said, the Canadian system isn’t like that. Yes, there are wait times occasionally, but I remember wait times in the states. It’s easier, more convenient, and it’s not reliant on a suit at an insurance company.

And, personally my kids have had 2 different paediatricians (their first one died) and my wife has had 4 different doctors for various things, and I can only think of one that I thought very little of.

dealing with it here, after dealing with it in the states, it’s a different world. im not getting paid by Trudeau to say this! It’s my honest opinion.

I value heat, land, not having roaches and rats in my apartment, etc. so I will ALWAYS choose Florida or Texas. Even with the crazy heat.

Actually we have it pretty good here in Pittsburgh. Beautiful summer. Geno will re-sign because he loves Pittsburhg. Duh.

f*** NYC. Always f*** NYC. From Adam Graves to their disgussssting city. f*** NYC.

Give me Montreal albeit not in the winter. What a beautiful spring/summer Montreal has. I love that city.
I remember those flying cockroaches were around when I lived in FL. You don't have those?

I only lived in Manhattan for six months but never saw a cockroach. Saw a few rats scampering on the streets but put a bushy tail on a rat and you have a squirrel.
