Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I saw a discussion on the main boards about “best franchise of the cap era” between pens hawks and bolts, the pens, I think, had 16 playoff appearances while the hawks and bolts were 11/10, I think. Anyhow, the point is, the penguins never had a refresh year, while those two teams had 5. Every GM we’ve had in this era has thrown futures for help in the present. Even a year where we lost both Sid and Geno we made the playoffs. No one f***ed up IMO. It’s not bad luck. We’ve just kicked the can down the road and now we’re at a dead end and there’s no more kicking to be done but our feet refuse to stop moving. If all 3 retired RIGHT NOW, you could trade guentzel and Marino and Jarry for good returns. You could sell cap space. You could rebuild this in 3-5 years, easily IMO. but they aren’t retiring so Hextall has to find some place to shove this can
You don't think there have been some bad choices by coaches / coaching - or with picks, trades, signings / contracts in the sid / geno / tang era?

No one f***ed up ???

I'd argue that Malkin is such a good finisher that having guys who can set him up for goals while playing a physical style is a great way of building that 2nd line.

I want both Rakell and Trocheck on Malkin's line. Both can play a speedy and gritty game and can give Malkin support offensively. I think Rakell also has a pretty good shot from out far and Trocheck scores a bunch of gritty goals around the net.

Yeah it's not the most flattering comparison because Zucker hasn't played well here, but I think it's pretty spot on.

I really think Trocheck brings almost all of the qualities that a good winger in a Sullivan system needs to bring. Sure, maybe he busts here entirely like Zucker did, but I still think that he can be what the Penguins thought Zucker was going to be.
I don’t want a good winger in a Sullivan system anymore (small, good speed, stone hands)…I want a winger that fits Colorado’s system lol

Not qualitfying Heinen...damn. They better have a good backup plan. For $1.1mil, scoring 18 goals playing on L1 through L4, they're gonna goof if they think they'll get that out of any ol' player. $3mil may be much for him realistically but looking at what standard mid-20s that are 20g scorers, it's not out of line.

Kapanen's QO is so low, I think you qualify him and then negotiate.

Trochek seems like a super obvious target, especially if Letang and Geno are coming in cheaper and we can move one of Zucker or Pettersson.

Jake-Sid-Rust
Rakell-Trocheck-Malkin

would be a great top 6.

I'm just worried we are going to lose a bunch of our quality depth scorers, sign "new" ones, and then not have them perform.

Heinen would have got a huge arbitration award. I'm sure if the Pens could have traded Heinen for a 4th or 5th rounder, they would have. Seems other teams are similarly hesitant.

Kane's walking in free agency to chase the money. Which is a surprise to literally no one. I actually give credit to Holland for not giving Kane what he wanted, that seems like a Holland type of move.

Kadri is a billion times better than Trochek but I think nhl GMs also know that and he’s getting 8 over 8.

Our management and head coaches have largely been awful during the Sid Geno regime. These two covered up a lot of warts, especially from the Bylsma and Shero reign of terror.

Shero and Bylsma don’t deserve their names on the cup. Sid and Geno would have 5 rings without those fools, especially Shero.

I think you’re misunderstanding. everyone makes mistakes. Like, no one wanted jack johnson and there was no way that was gonna work.

but we’re not here today because of jack Johnson or mark eaton etc…

we’re here because, for the past 17 years, this team has had an unwavering commitment to winning the cup. Every decision made was with an eye to the 365 days in front of us, not to the future. On a micro level, there were mistakes. No more mistakes, IMO, than your average nhl franchise makes. f***ups happen.

when I say, “we’re here and no one f***ed up,” I mean, “this is the logical conclusion to the path they chose, their goals were noble and pure, and the journey is now basically over.”

There are sooo many RFA's not getting qualified. The cap space in the league is not there for what these guys would get in Arb.

The reality is a lot of players are going to have to take a lot less than the arbitrator would have given them.

Bruins fan come in peace

Just not enough capsapce to bring back Heinen? Or his play wasn't great (overall)?

Trocheck is a reasonable get after reupping Geno. Adding Rakell on top of that would be great, but that might be a bit too ambitious.

It's not too ambitious (we just have to move out Zucker), but I would put Trochek behind all of Copp, Burakovsky and Kadri.

It's a cap space issue. Heinen was a reliable 3rd liner all year, they just can't afford to pay him what he'd reasonably be costing to re-sign.

He's a churn and burn type of player. Keep him when he's cheap and let someone else pay him when he stops being cheap.

Yet lol.

I could see Holland caving at some point. They need a top 6 winger desperately.

It's a cap issue. Heinen reportedly asking for $3 million and the Penguins just don't want to go to that level. Heinen was fine. Versatile player, popped in a bunch of goals. But ultimately replaceable at a lower cap hit.
